This forum, hands down, has more spammers on it than ANY other forum that I've ever been a member of. What is the difference that attracts them here??

I have no idea, but I have definitely noticed that. Maybe it's higher on the google results? I've also seen more anti-span precautions on other forums too. One that I am a prt of moderates every member for their first 5 posts. None of those first posts will be published until they are approved. Freely posting is allowed only after 5 posts have been approved (so they can't just dump 5 crap posts and then be free to spam, bypassing moderation).

We're one of the biggest and busiest forums out there...if we modded every new person for their first five posts, things would slow WAY down. We would lose members...we've actually got a LOT of precautions in place, the spammers are just getting more creative with getting around them. It's less bots and more people who are getting paid to put this crap out there.

We could add more mods to deal with things, but you guys bitch enough about the ones we've got already. ;)

I hadn't intended to mean it's something that should be done here - merely stating what's done somewhere else. It works there; it's a small forum, very close-knit, and not terribly active (active enough, but I'm still able to read each and every post without having to dedicate my life to it lol).

My other main forum that I'm on, I've seen one, maybe two spammers in over 7 years. It has more active members than chaz, and shows up on more google search results. They just make you lurk for a month before posting; works amazingly well.

forced lurking im sure works well for many but we do get legitimate members who find us BECAUSE they have an emergency, an urgent question ect.

the mods we have here (myself included) try to keep ontop of it, but, were human, and most have lives outside of the forum...
however theres been many times ive gotten up in the morning seen a reported post come here to check it out and its already taken care of.

if its spam, just hit report post and pass it over...

I'm not saying it's not fun to jump on the spam-wagon here and there, and I'm not necessarily complaining, was just wondering ;)

I didn't take your post as complaining one bit Sis.......just curiosity :D
(hence the reason for my joking with 'cool like dat' LOL)

To be honest, before and SINCE I've been a mod, I've wondered the same thing and the only answer I can find is because we are so large/well known in cyber space, and because of the loose way we run the forum (which makes it more fun/helpful to many......us included) makes us an easier target. Not much fun to spam a small place with no traffic, or a place where it doesn't rile up the natives :rofl1:

I belong to a member of a forum that is VERY active and has tons of members, but has NO spam. Before they are allowed to post in any other section, members are required to post a proper introduction in the introduction section, and then a mod "unlocks" their account so that they can post in other sections. I didn't find this annoying when I joined, and it doesn't seem to make anything slow.

ah, well, spam doesn't really do any harm, as long as members are savvy enough (like ours) to not click on the links. ;)

The pron spam, though . . . . the filters seem to be working -- for now. They have to be adjusted every now and then.

And honestly, you should see some of the stuff that we stop before it starts ;) There have been a few "preemptive strikes" against suspected spammers just because of a username or what they put in their signature. Personally, while it's fun to have an itchy trigger finger (which I certainly do at times), I've found that it's better to give the benefit of the doubt when I'm not sure. Often the new user turns out to be a spammer, but other times they turn out to be just fine.

Like Renee says, realistically the spammers do no harm and our members seem to be smart enough to recognize them for what they are and don't click their dumb links. So, kudos to you, folks, too :D

forced lurking im sure works well for many but we do get legitimate members who find us BECAUSE they have an emergency, an urgent question ect.

Anyone who comes to a forum to post a question that they need a dire, urgent answer to deserves to be forced to lurk for a month. If you have a question that needs answering now, then you should be talking to a vet or someone in real life that is qualified to give you a trustworthy answer. The forum has a search function, so they can look for any answers already posted if they are stupid enough to trust an emergency to the internet.
