I'm thinking about getting Mina chipped at woofstock this year, they're offering it for $25 which includes the registration fee.

The chip is through avid, does anyone have experience with them?

I don't have any direct experience with them but I do know that our newest addition is microchipped through them. And the only real reason I know that is cause she has the tag...lol. The rescue is supposed to put our contact information on there soon.

Xena's chip is through Home Again. The price sounds about right. I think I paid a little more when I had it done, but it was also during her spay, so I couldn't tell you which cost was which without looking at the bill.

$25 is a good price. We use AVID at work, and we charge $41 for the chip and implant. Registration through AVID is I think $18 give or take, but it's lifelong. So $25 for the chip AND registration is very cheap. Both my dogs have AVID chips. The one thing you need to be really careful of is that all the information is legible on the registration paper. If anything is off, it'll be wrong when they put it in the computer, and then they won't change it unless you pay the change of information fee. So if possible, type it. You may even be able to do it online by now.

AVIDs website and everything is hard to find and they are hard to deal with when I dealt with them. I asked to change walkers address its 15 bucks and they mail you a brochure to do it. IF you can find the website.

If anyone here has trouble getting their hands on a brochure, let me know. I have free access to them so I can mail you one ;)

Hm, now I think I can also register an avid chip with AKC'S CAR program can't I?

I'm thinking I can get her an AVID chip and obviously registering her with them since it's included in the cost of chipping, but then dual registering her with the CAR program since it seems easier to update info with them.

Mine are chipped with HomeAgain, registration is $16, the chips were about $17 - so $25 isn't a bad deal.
What i liked about them is I registered their chips through their website and can change my address just by logging in and typing in new information. Of course they have the pamphlet that came with the chips where you can submit the info too, but submitting it online was really fast (less than 20 minutes to do both dogs) and it just charged my card from the site.

Avid didn't have the kind of chips I needed and none of the local vets here that I called carry avid, only HomeAgain.

Yeah, that's one of the things I like. I can also upload a picture of my dog for free and make changes at will. I didn't have to give a credit card on the site, because I got the package "chip plus reg" from the vet (paid the vet for the reg, basically). When I signed on with my chip ID, it just asked for verification of info and didn't ask for a nickel.

Really, it just sounds like you need to find your best deal and what works best for you.

My vet didn't do the chipping so I had to register them individually. But when I had Smokey chipped the vet did it from the office and input it all from there - I think it cost like $38-40.

My vet does homeagain. I called about it today and it's a $30 office fee, $55 for the chip and then $17 for the registration. That's why I'm leaning more towards getting her an AVID chip at woofstock.

All of the vets here (and the ones in IL, where Jules was chipped) use Avid. I've not had any issues with them

:yikes:

Have you tried calling like low cost spay and neuter clinics? A lot of the time (like the one here) they'll do chipping for real cheap too. Chipping is a walk-in appt at the one here too, no office fee or anything.

$55 for the chip is ridiculous! You can buy HomeAgain chips for about $16 each online (I did from Valley Vet)
To chip both of mine, chip and registration, was like $64.

I can see why you'd go for the $25, I would too. It wouldn't have mattered what chip I used if I wasn't moving internationally, so yeah if I could have used just any chip, I'd have had the low cost place in town do it for me.

I live in a pretty rural area, so we don't have any low cost clinics around. I wish we did, it's going to be $55 next month just to get her hw tested. I thought it was ridiculous too, it would end up being over $100. I just can't see spending that when I can get her chipped for $25. I read up on it too and I can register her chip number with AKC's CAR program as well, so that will be a place I can update info easily if need be. Right now that's not going to be an issue for a good long while because I'm not moving anywhere anytime soon. So I think I'm just going to go with the avid chip.

I *think* you can register any brand of chip with HomeAgain also. I know on Lacey's AKC papers I added her chip # as a secondary form of ID.
Once you get her chipped, might be a good idea to have it added as another form of ID to things like her rabies cert and such when you go to do a new one. It's not necessary but could be useful I suppose if you ever need to prove beyond a reasonable doubt the dog is vaccinated.
