now should ALL raw meats fed to your dogs be frozen or just pork? And if all meats should be frozen how long should they be frozen before they are safe for the dog to eat raw?

Pork does not need to be frozen unless if it is not fit for human consumption.

Wild game should be frozen before feeding.

And roadkill, or anything else not raised for human consumption.

Salmon from the north Pacific ocean should be frozen for a week to kill flukes.

All of these should be frozen for at least a week before feeding.

Anything not raised for human consumption should go to the freezer for a week, in my opinion. I am not sure if chickens can carry anything that would affect a dog, but in my house I freeze everything that isn't raised as meat for humans. If it's chicken from the grocery store, there is no need to freeze it. I've often come home and fed meat to my dogs straight from the store. :)

but a butcher should be the same thing as a grocery store right. We are going to order some raw meats from a butcher should that stuff be frozen?

For storage reasons I freeze all meats. I thaw in the fridge overnight.

Do you have to freeze chicken? No. I bought chicken on sale tonight and I placed Jed's chicken meal for tomorrow from today's purchase straight into the fridge. I am freezing the rest.

Well we would freeze everything as well but I didn't know if I could take an unfrozen piece of chicken that was fresh from the butcher and feed that to her or not.

*dang Windoze crashes*

I rinse what comes from the butcher if I am planning on giving some of it straight away to Jed. When in doubt, however, go ahead and freeze it first.

When I get my cases of chicken, I'll leave 1 pack in the fridge and the rest gets frozen for later use. No issues here. Their stomach/digestive juices are STRONG- why do you think they can eat garbage and other "crap" and not get sick?

Along the same lines, you can also freeze and thaw the meat numerous times with no ill effect to a dog. As well as feed meat to them that has been sitting in the fridge way too long, and smells pretty rancid. Actually, to them, the stinkier the better!

Dogs can eat roadkill, a little stinky meat fit for human consumption isn't going to hurt. I tend to buy meat reduced for quick sale whenever I can. It's cheap. My dogs ate off of a 'reduce for quick sale' pork extravaganza for a month (not the whole month, but over the period of a month).

The only thing I toss in the deep freeze for awhile is wild caught food.

ok. My food will get frozen just because that's where it's getting stored but I was going to leave just like one or two days food in the refrigerator without freezing. We ordered some chicken, beef heart and liver just to see how she likes the raw (which we're sure she'll love it) but we are going to keep her on the Evo for a month or so until we can get an appropriate meal plan for her.

Tira's stomach didn't agree with the pork the day after. Gunner was fine, but she had diarrhea.
So if all of our meat is frozen that's ok. Can they eat frozen chicken? I know it takes longer to eat, but I want to be sure even if all the meat they get is frozen that it's still good.

Mine ate frozen chicken halves yesterday. Feeding frozen meat is fine.

Stick to ONE protein source when you first start raw feeding, at least for the first few days. Chicken usually agrees with most dogs. Don't jump into the variety too soon, introduce it slowly. I wouldn't count off pork just yet, the problems probably arose because you introduced variety too soon.

The more I read about feeding raw, the more interested I become. It just seems so much better for the dog. I just have no idea where to begin. My dog weighs 12 pounds. She gets 1/2 cup kibble in the morning and another 1/2 cup in the evening. Would 2 pieces of raw chicken a day be sufficient? Can anyone make a suggestion? I would really, really appreciate it! Thanks :)

A 12lb dog at 2% would be 3.84oz a day or 5.76oz at 3%. That's your base, but you can alter it to fit your dog. Some dogs need less, some dogs need a little more.

I just have no idea where to begin.
Read back through this whole thread, a lot of commonly asked questions are answered. Plus, there are many links posted that offer some great reading material.

It depends on what pieces we're talking about :)

As a side note, chicken is cheap and a good for whole animal feeding but raw fed dogs also need variety.

does anyone here have any opinion on ground turkey? Mark's friend is cleaning out their huge freezer and he has a lot of ground turkey he was going to throw out and I grabbed it for Hannah. I have read on some sites that this can be fed to dogs, does anyone feed it because he had 10 -1lb rolls in there that I grabbed before he could toss them.

It's not good for cleaning teeth, but it is otherwise fine. Only thing I would caution you about is that ground food has a much higher amount of bacteria on it. If your dog isn't used to raw, I would be careful with it, only feeding a small amount the first time around.
