Not only is lying about food allergies a pain for the chef and cooks, but it creates a sense of "illegitimate allergies". For example, people with Celiac Disease, or other gluten intolerant conditions often get eye rolls when they say they are allergic to gluten.
Yup.

There's also a huge scene here with naturopaths dealing with people and giving them laundry lists of "allergies". I got a card from a customer with, not a word of a lie, TWENTY FOUR "allergies". Whether they were legit or not, i don't know but some where really really out there. However, even though it meant making 90% of that dish she ordered from scratch right there on the fly, we accommodated because it's what we are taught to do even if it is indeed very out there. Especially at my restaurant which is known in these parts for being very allergy and celiac friendly.

I've gone out to dinner with people who are just really picky but who pass it off as an allergy. It's reeeeally frustrating when they ask the server to 'go check and see if this dish has pepper" and then when they come back, they send them back to 'ask if this other dish has onions'. Over. And OVER. >.<

My mom is sensitive to high fructose corn syrup. That's a fun one to find places she can eat at....

It's really annoying for us too. Especially when we're busy busy. The servers have other tables needing tending and we are running our butts off in the back.

Sometimes we get requests like "veggie burger, CELIAC". Umm... Our veggie burgers have bread crumbs in them, they are not listed as able to be completely gluten free. Sometimes it's a server issue, they do know but they don't always remember, sometimes we get a "oh well i've eaten it before and been fine but i'm celiac!" which enrages us. Or people that are "allergic to tomatoes" but salsa is fine just no pico de gallo. Really. REALLY. Ugh.

Your mom's best bet is places that are almost completely scratch made. She'd have no problem at all eating at our restaurant as we make almost everything we serve. We do have a handful of convenience products but they're in the form of breaded chicken or chicken fingers or a couple salad dressings. Everything else is fresh ingredients and made in house with real, simple, ingredients. In fact a large amount of our ingredients are brought to our back door by the actual producers themselves lol. Like the good ol' days.

I have vented about this before, but it is not stopping, so am going to vent again. Can't alternate holidays because then my family won't see us for a whole holiday and they get upset. Can't split holidays because don't you know we automatically spend more time with his?? (We don't). Easter was supposed to be "my" holiday to do but my family said NO WAY because they are not, ever, under any circumstances going to be subjected to his family ever again. So, my sister took Easter. Again.

Angry, we decided to not do anything with either family. Hubby is mad that any time my family says something, I just blindly follow without question. Not this time. We found out his parents were going away, but my sister had already taken Easter, so, what was I going to do? Say I want Easter now so you guys can come over? No. We stayed home and did nothing, and then made a wondeful dinner and it was glorious.

Then, I get an angry, holier-than-thou message from my sister last night, offended that we didn't go to her house, even though his parents were away. Argument ensued. She said she wasn't going to talk about it anymore (fine by me!) Because all I do is come up with excuses. Didn't know my feelings were excuses. Even after saying how unfair they are about this holiday junk.

It is getting old, man. Real old.

Had a major panic attack last night because I convinced myself I have diabetes. Now I want to get tested just because I can't stop thinking about it. I have constantly tingly feet, tiredness, and hunger. I don't have excessive thirst or urination though, which are the main symptoms, but I have almost everything else.

I probably also have heart disease.

I hate anxiety.

If you take any solace in not feeling alone....I have effectively convinced myself I have some sort of GI tumor due to a combination of some issues and inexplicable weight gain.
It sucks.

Also Easter. I was away at shows all weekend. I got home Sunday shortly before my family came home from dinner at my grandfathers. My dad announces that they brought leftovers. I dig into the plate that was made, only to find out that my mother was scheduled on night shift and that was actually her dinner. I was yelled at.
Silly me thinking that they saved me some dinner because I was unable to attend.

The number of times people have thought I meant "I don't like pineapple," when I say "I am allergic to pineapple," has always baffled me, but finding out that it's common to lie about allergies makes that make a lot more sense.

I also hear, "I didn't think it was possible to be allergic to a fruit," a lot.

I get the same thing with blueberries. They're always like "you don't like blueberries?!" and I'm like "I LOVE BLUEBERRIES. MY BODY DOESN'T."

I am allergic to coconut.. and people always tell me that can't be a real allergy. One hairdresser washed my hair with shampoo with it in it. Because she didn't believe me. Until my scalp broke out in red welts.

People need to stop saying they have allergies when they just don't like things.

I hear ya.

I'm allergic to pinapple, kiwi, mango, banana, and strawberry... Another cook in our kitchen is allergic to pineapple too, worse than me though.

My skin is allergic to a lot of things, its very sensitive and I cant use the shimmery body sprays companies sometimes come out with. I even have to watch which perfumes I use, or I will break out in a rash.

I usually stick with bath and body works when I can, for some reason, their products dont irritate me. In a pinch, I will get some baby wash (I know, I know LOL) or the "Ivory" brand is also been very good for me. I even have to be careful which body powders I use (usually stick to gold bond, or baby powder). I also get a lot of quizzical looks when I mention that I cant use most OTC makeups (so I dont bother wearing any anymore) or even sunblock (It sucks having to choose btw burning and breaking out :/ ).

But yeah, people who lie about having allergies, that isnt cool.

Clive is allergic to grapes, pineapple and kiwi. Really sad for a kid who likes fruit. (also, they like to sneak grapes into all manner of kid juices)

It's not a true allergy, but for the longest time apple juice concentrate gave me massive digestive upset. It's in every.single.juice.blend. >.<

I'm allergic to kiwi and mango also! They're less common foods though, so I don't usually have to worry (except at Indian food places! So many great mango dishes I can't have).

It's funny; I've met several people online that are allergic to pineapple but no one in real life.

I'm not allergic to pineapple, but it sure lets you know whenever you bit your tongue or have any sort of cut, sore, or anything like that.
