Oh my. If anyone hasn't noticed I've been offline awhile because I was up visiting my aunt helping her get her two young horses started with ground training. The trip was pleasant except for one thing. I had first hand experience with a pit bull hater two days ago. This pit bull hater was not who I thought he'd be. He was my uncle!

Now let's get the facts straight. My uncle loves dogs. He owns four (a Maltese cross, a cocker spaniel/poodle cross, a small mutt and a giant Black Lab cross). One of them he took in from a neglectful home, one he adopted from the pound, one my aunt bought long ago and one they bought from a pet store. He's not the most knowledgeable dog owner but he treats all his dogs well and there are always a few doggy visitors over at his house. All four of them sleep with him and my aunt and are enjoying farm life with the 8 cats, 3 horses and God knows how many birds. So needless to say these dogs live pretty well. My uncle is a nice guy. We were sitting watching the news when the whole pit bull argument came about.

A group of pit bulls attacked a lady. The story was on the news. Being me I tossed in a comment about how they had to chuck in the world pit bull. They couldn't have just said dog attack. No. They had to bring in the title pit bull. The attack was nasty but had that been a group of collies they more than likely would have just said "pack of dog attacks lady" not "KILLER COLLIES ATTACK WOMAN!" This is where it all started.

He started going off on how pit bulls have lock jaw, how they are bred to be mean, and how they flip because that is just in their nature. They are aggressive dogs and that is that. Debating with him was like debating a brick wall. I explain how pit bulls aren't even one breed, how dogs are a product of both breeding and their environment, and any dog of any breed could attack someone if it was loose, good family dog or not. I tried explaining how where I live I have never met any stray or aggressive pit bulls (there is an aggressive hound and rotti who run wild but no pit bull type dogs).

What do you say to people when they are so hard headed? How can you educate someone who isn't willing to listen to what you have to say? How can you prove you're right if they are so convinced you are wrong? I know bully breed have attacked people but so has every breed of dog.

I wasn't angry with him but my opinion of him did change. Sitting there with his big black lab all I could think of is what if Mak got loose? This dog has never left their 5 acre fenced in farm. He has never been away from home. My uncle would defend that dog's life till his own death if Mak bit someone. Sure Mak isn't aggressive but if we applied my uncle's logic to his dog Mak could turn into a killer within a second. Just because he is a big huge black dog doesn't make him evil. Yes he could turn on anyone at any given time but in the mean time do you consider him a bad dog? Think of him as a terrible being that needs to be put to sleep? I've been bit by a black lab before. By no means did I judge his dog by my experience.

So why I ask is everyone so hard headed and set in their ways? If you don't want to own a pit bull type dog that is fine. I personally don't want to own one either (well, in the future yes but not any time soon) but if all you ever look at is the negative you'll never see the positive. When I hear the word pit bull I think of the two I grew up with. The one was nasty and we weren't aloud around her because the adults wanted us all in one piece at the end of the day but the other played with us in the yard, licked our faces, and cuddled up with all of us kids under the tree for our afternoon nap. Charlie was probably the most amazing dog I have ever met. Now old and grey she still is as wonderful as ever.

This is a bit of a rant I guess. I just wanted to post it somewhere where people would understand what I am talking about.

Tell us how you really feel?

I agree with you. Verde is only part pit, she is the friendlyer of my two. I have to worry about Blue with small dogs and children yet he attracts people.

Yorkies kill!

They feed into the media hype and believe everything they hear and read. I've noticed that it's most people who don't have dogs that believe the media. I got into a huge argument with one of my coworkers about the same exact thing. She refused to believe what I was telling her, when I brought up information proving my point she wouldn't even read it...

Because most people are uneducated about pit bulls and on they here about them is what the media portrays them to be.. cold hearted killers... which they are not.

People pick up the newspaper and read.. Pit Bull kills... Pit Bull attacks... yada yada yada.. its sickening. :(

I do have to say that amount of "pit bull" attacks I see in the news is pretty alarming.

That's very true. But unfortunately the rest of population doesn't know that..after all the news would never LIE to us...

Just last week a bull terrier (target dog, not sure of the exact name) attacked a child. When it was first reported it was a bull terrier, when I got home after work it was a Pit Bull

Which just adds to the confusion. I frequently see bull terriers listed as a "pit bull dog". As in pit bull, the type, not the APBT. So, do they qualify as pit bulls?

I don't know what to tell you. My dad is a bit the same way. We got into a similar discussion after a report on Vick the other day. It amazes me that someone who has very little dog knowledge has actually formed such a solid opinion based on news reports. Hopefully I got through to him a bit.

i still remember when this big brindle boy ran up to me and my sister when we were young. we were near our house and he was very tall so we got inside our fence gate. Soemthing had frightened him, he ran up, sat at our gate, wagged like mad and got pats.

i went out and told mum to come look at him, he was covered in mange, terrified, very skinny and just wanting soem attention. First thing my stepdad said was "he's got a red nose, he's a pit, he needs a bullet" i couldn't believe him, i was pretty young and had never even considered the idea that just because of its breed, a dog could be "bad". I was so shocked when he said that.

We ended up paying his vet bills, feeding him up, fixing his mange (then fixing it on buster when he got it) and rehoming him. All his coat grew back so nicley to. He was the sweetest thing.

he was a camp dog, used to just following people around, so in the aftrenoon we'd take him with us down to the shop. he was so well behaved, he never had a leash or collar, but just ignored everyone and everything we went past.
then waited outside the shop for us to come out then walked us home. he was quite tall but just picked me and my sister to look out for.

we were actually going to keep him, but once we let him start mingling withour dogs, he got so dominant over buster and almost over sophie we decided that since he was still growing and going to be a BIG dog, we didn't want to deal wiht him arguing wiht the other ones

The main problem with the news reports is its usually not a pit bull that did the attacking.
i respectfully disagree.

the main problem with news reports is that they report pit bull attacks, pit bull non-attacks, and pit bull could-have-attackeds far more widely and dramatically than they report dog bites from other breeds.

i agree that dogs are frequently misidentified as pit bulls, and that just contributes to the above problem. if they'd been misidentified as lab mixes, they wouldn't make the news at all.

I have a friend that i recently got into an argument with over pit bulls. He thinks they are all aggressive and should be banned. I told him it's not the breed it's the owners and how they are raised that any dog could be aggressive. If you breed something to fight and raise it to fight and smack it around till it fights, whats it going to do???? DUH...
It's not fair that this breed is so bad mouthed. It's because of all the people fighting dogs and ruining this breed. If they start banning this breed the heartless dog fighters will just pick another breed to fight. When and where does it end????

Sorry, got a little off topic.

There is a guy at work who I pass by about 2 or 3 times a day. He is a security guard. He asked me one day what breeds of dogs I owned. When I told him I owed a pit bull he immediatly started telling me how I need to "get rid" (euthanize) her. I argued with him about it. In the argument he told me 2 stories one of a Doberman he had to have euthanized for aggression and one of a Rottie his daughter had who had to be euthanized for aggression, I said "look you proved my point all dogs bite" to which he went on again about pit bulls.

Now every time I pass by him, he asks me when I am going to get rid of my pit bull. It is to the point where I am about to tell him I feel that is harassment and if it continues I will go to someone higher up in the company to make him stop.

It really bothers me that EVERY TIME I walk by this guy has a smart arse comment. On Friday, he actually asked me if I was friends with Michael Vick.

I dont care if he hates pit bulls (although he is VERY ignorant) but jeez, leave a person alone about the type of dog they choose to have.

I plan on either ignoring him or tell him that I consider what he is doing very serious since it makes me not want to go near him every day and that could cause problems with my job.

I try to be nice & friendly with the guy and talk about something other than pit bulls or mine in particular when I walk by but he just wont let up.

Ooooooooohhh that happened to me last week.. Ilsa's got a WAE coming up in a few weeks, and I was explaining it to a co-worker of mine. The last partof the test, the dog has to show whether or not it'll step up and protect - so yo're actually hoping for an aggressive response from the dog! Another coworker overheard us, and said something like, "Ahhh, sounds like a Michael Vick Fan Club!"

Made me soooo mad...

Pit Bulls are getting a bad rap. The Buster Brown Shoe Dog was a Pit Bull. These dogs are trained. It's like crime being blamed on video games. The news is reactionary that way. Bad owners should be banned from caring for pets.

The annoying thing is that people seem to think because it is the only type of attacks reported it must be the only ones happening or that they are the most frequent, which is false. I mean the kid (my brother's friend) down the street got bit by his Golden retriever in the face (kid needed surgery, dog had to be PTS), my aunts have been bit by a Shih-Tzu, no blood though, My dad and other neighborhood kids were bit by a Weimeraner and my friend was bit by a Cocker Spaniel. (I'm not trying to pick on any other breeds I'm just showing that other breeds can and do bite even if they are common "family" dogs).

Has he ever meet your dog? I mean that is what I hate. People who have ethier NEVER meet one, or havent meet your dog and tell you to get rid of it. Personaly I would have like to hit him,but then we could have had some problems;) . Also, Vick HATED his dogs and dint care about them. You [and others] LOVE your dog, you are NOT like Vick. So I would TRY to not listen but if it gets BAD I would do something about it.
