Sadly I am Canadian and don't have Whole Foods.. But, I will look at the bigger grocery stores and see what I can see. Thank you :)

I am still eating some fish and shrimp, but I've given up everything else meat. It's been a week, and my Mom is still pissy as all hell with me.

I have a huge list from the back of Skinny Bitch that is suggestions for meatless (and often dairy free but I'm not going that far) brands that they like. They say there is enough meat free stuff out there that is gross. I haven't been able to go grocery shopping yet to see what I can find to try, but it's nice to see that even non vegetarian people like the meatless stuff. Few people at work suggested a few restaurants in town to try out veggie burgers at and I'm kind of excited.
I hardly ever eat meat substitutes to be honest. Maybe like once or twice a year when we're not grilling fish. (My whole family is veg., but we eat seafood.) I do like home made veggie burgers though! =) They are so easy, but SO SO yummy!
Theres enough yummy meals out there that you don't even need meat substitutes! I can't really think of anything where I would need them ^^

this one is similare to the recipe I make:
I add some chopped onions and peppers to my mix though.

1 c. oatmeal (quick cooking)
1 c. wheat germ
1 c. whole wheat bread crumbs
1 c. cashews, grounded finely
1 c. carrots, grated
1 tbsp. pepper
2 tbsp. garlic powder
3 tbsp. soy sauce
2 c. water

Mix first 3 ingredients together in large pot. Add cashews and carrots. Stir, then add rest of ingredients using your hands. Squeeze until they hold together. Form patties and bake on an oiled baking pan at 350 degrees for 15 minutes on each side. Serve on roll with catsup and mustard, etc.

Awesome! Thanks hun. I will be trying that! That's awesome that your whole family eats the same way. I've been made to feel like I'm an unhealthy inconvenience when I am working to be healthier..

I'd like to try some substitutes.. but so far I've been happy adding new exciting things to salads liek chick peas and such. I'm not set on 'needing' them. But I thought it might be fun to try.

On the upside.. I'd been grabbing fast food too much lately out of laziness.. and now I find I have to think too hard about where I'd go ;) So I'm eating less crap I really didn't need lately.

I went on a ski trip yesterday and packed a cooler full of food for me out of fear I wouldn't find good options at the hill. People kept telling me it looked like too much work. It really hadn't been much effort at all..

Thought I'd post this link for people who are trying to eat healthier and/or diet but also like going OUT to eat :D

It's a "healthy dining" restaurant list, they have various healthy choices at LOTS of restaurants complete with all the nutrition info so you can plan what to order before you get there..........very helpful for calorie, carb, fat, and protein counters :) Also makes life easier about not drawing attention to the fact while out with friends, dates, whatever.

That's awesome Coop! I go to a VW meet every week at Perkins and their nutritional calculator was killing me, looks like I was eliminating the wrong stuff though, lol.

And Egg Beaters...yum!!
Any healthy suggestions on what could go in an omelet? I can't make omelets very good with regular eggs but it is easy with the Egg Beaters. I'm not a huge fan of veggies in eggs, they kind of freak me out :p
Any other healthy ideas?

wc, I am definitely going to try that recipe sometime, it sounds super yummy!

CAFFEINE!!!

I've heard different things regarding caffeine. I know a lot of stuff I have read says that it messes up your metabolism so cut it out. But then I've also read that you should drink green tea right before you exercise cause it will help raise your metabolism. What's the deal?

Not that I'll give up my tea regardless. It is my drug during school and it definitely makes up most of my water intake :p

I honestly don't think there are any definitive studies about the matter. Lots of studies, but all with varying conclusions I think. I will continue to drink my coffee dammit! As with most things though, too much caffeine is probably bad.

Multiple sources say that green tea has numerous health benefits. It has just a small amount of caffeine compared with black tea or coffee.

I'm afraid coffee is one thing that I have not been able to completely cut out but I have cut down to two cups a day (from about 4) and one sugar (from two), so I guess that's something.

I have to have my morning coffee, but I love having coffee in the afternoon/early evening.

I have been good and haven't touched any wine for about a month and it's really the only alcohol I drink, except for the ocassional G&T. I guess a couple of glasses would not hurt in a week, but not having it doesn't hurt either.

from everything I read 1-2 cups of coffee a day is TOTALLY fine. (I'd even say up to 4 is fine...but remember what a "cup" is, haha).

No sense in removing coffee or green tea from your diet at all!

Stay away from decaf though...it has added chemicals in it. Coffee & green tea have antioxidants which are good for you :)

I just started dieting and excercising and so far I've lost two pounds in three days. I'm beginning to think I'm losing it too fast. Am I?

My diet consists of:

Fruits
Veggies
Green Tea
Water
Fish
Nuts

Fish is the only meat I need to eat. I need to stop sneaking in pork. ;)
I eat my biggest meal at breakfast and steady decrease it. Breakfast is huge and balanced, Lunch Moderate, and Dinner small.

Ever since I've started this diet, I feel like I have more energy and am tired at night. 2 lbs down, 78 lbs to go!

I need some easy and healthy lunch type of meals. Anyone know some good sites?
I don't have any specific recipes, but I use this cookbook a ton:
Amazon.com: Pillsbury: Fast and Healthy Cookbook: 350 Easy Recipes for Every Day (9780609600856): Pillsbury Company:…
It tells you the calories in all the meals and most don't have a TON of ingredients for each recipe. I would get you some recipes out of it, but I was smart and left it at Ryan's in Minnesota
I generally don't like cookbooks because I tend to find like 3 recipes in them and only use them, but I have made probably half of the recipes in that cookbook and with the exception of 1 or 2, would make them all again.

ETA: There is also an AMAZING and super super easy fruit tart in that book that I now take to all the parties where you bring a dish and it's always a favorite.

ETA v2.0: You can look at the index of the book with a lot of the recipes on that Amazon link.

Kalyn's Kitchen

This has a bunch of Southbeach recipes. I don't follow the Southbeach diet, but there are lots of yummy things on there.

I made tomato and pesto topped Salmon last night for dinner and it was awesome.

I think Saga is going to like my new egg white breakfasts....guess who gets the yolks.

Folks... I think I hit it out of the park tonight. AND it was healthy too.

2.5 cups of cherry tomatoes, quartered. (From our garden tonight.)
1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup fresh basil, finely diced. (From our garden tonight)
Salt and Pepper to taste
1/8 cup of parsley
3-4 cloves of garlic
1 lb of shrimp

Saute everything except shrimp for about 3 minutes. Put on low heat, cover and simemr for about 15 mins. Stir every 3-4 minutes.

Turn up heat to 3/4's and add shrimp. Saute for about 4 mins (until shrimp are done.) Serve over rice.

It was DANG good. :) We had that with fresh greeen beans from our garden.

How did my awesome thread end up here? :p

Can I revive it so as not to throw off other threads? If so...

for those of you who eat a lot of veggies, what percentage of your daily intake is veggies? I am trying to get back on the wagon and I know I need a lot more veggies, but I am trying to figure out how much of them I should be eating a day.

Shanka :)
