I think Laur is on the money, it can come from a place where you are always like "crap, this one has these problems. Okay the next dog will be better" and like BB said it's just an endless loop when you get into that. I see it in agility rather a lot. Auggie was never supposed to retire and Payton would be here in his place so to speak. I just made the decision to retire him after I got P... But people still think I replaced Auggie and it's because they have seen it happen time and time again. Dear God how awful to replace Auggie with this thing. Yikes. From the outside they've definitely seen this exact story though. Young person starts with less than ideal dog, retires less than ideal dog when new young drivey dog comes along, new young drivey dog is a mess because high drive dogs are a nightmare...


Also I definitely do not possess the superpower to plan dinner while eating breakfast. I DON'T KNOW I HAVEN'T EVEN FINISHED EATING THIS YET GOD

In Leo, I have the perfect dog for myself. How did I get so lucky to get this bright, active, friendly, stable with an amazing off-switch dog?

And you know what, I STILL think about Next Dog all the time. I really really want to add a female border collie puppy. I already know through which breeder, even though I'll probably have to wait a few years because I'll have to have my own place before adding a second dog would be feasible.

But it's not because I want to REPLACE HIM. I just want to ADD HER!
I want a female dog too, and I really want to raise a puppy. Plus, Leo would be so happy with a companion dog. He is so so dog motivated and loves playing with other dogs, and here am I, living with no other dogs for him to play with.

I think it is perfectly acceptable to think about NextDog no matter who you are and which dogs you have. We are human and capable of many complex thoughts at the same time . I can want nextdog even while appreciating current dog fully and completely .

Asking in all honesty: advice on human-skin-safety with an overly foody dog who chomps on all your bloody fingers instead of just taking the treat?

Lancer's inclined to bite all fingers when the luring is at or above his eye-level.

I considered buying thick gloves, but what the heck if there's another mysterious way.

I guess I should mention that I put on some thin gloves, and Lancer straight up tried to rip the whole glove right off my hand when trying to take the treat LOL.

ETA: WELL, why did I never think of luring with peanut butter on a spoon/stick. I've been so fixed on using pieces of treats, I forgot that sticky-licky treats were an option!

Honestly with all of the training that I do with my dogs, their food manners have gone out the window because I pretty much throw a treat into their mouths as fast as possible which has created piranhas. But if I want them to take something nicely, I'll close my fist if they go to chomp it and remind them to be nice.

Yeeaapp, that's essentially what I've been doing with Lancer for the past few months, and thus he has become one such piranha. Going to re-teach him to be gentle again from square one. More hand injuries must be sustained LOL

Boom. I agree 100%. Hugo is the perfect dog for me and I would never replace him, but I want to dogs and I want to raise a little female aussie or border collie puppy.

Dekka is the canine love of my life (this comes as a surprise to no one) Next year, the year she is 11, I am planning on getting back into competing. Sure Schen will tag along, and he is going to be great. He is likely going to excel more quickly and make me look good. However there is no other dog I would rather play with than Dekka.

That said, I still make note of breeders I like and think of Next Dog.

I recently purchased a "lickity stik" for this very reason, and when i saw this post I had to LOL.

This is why I never lure anything and am alway throwing treats/food on the ground or into their mouths

If I had to lure, I'd probably use a target stick and then toss a treat.

Today I took Wilson to petco and there were like five or six different kids there, and rather than leaving I decided to try and do some counter conditioning with him. He's really scared of kids and they were being kind of noisy and running around (ignoring him for the most part though which is good!), so I didn't think I'd get very far. After about ten minutes of just making it rain hot dogs from the sky every time he saw a child he was actually fairly relaxed and offering focus! He only boofed a few times when he got startled but after being in the store for 20 minutes or so he was focusing on me in the checkout line while there was a group of three kids standing in front of us. So proud of my guy! I don't think I give him enough credit sometimes

I saw this on facebook and laughed an abnormal amount. I think the commentary made it even funnier "Are you a good boy? Why you do your mouth like that?!"

We had fireworks last night. Seems Diwali is more than a one day thing. They were all evening. Still going at 11:30. Small community ones and professional ones. It was just like Canada day.

Good news is that the meds are helping with that. Dekka did not attack Schen (fireworks and thunder are always clearly his fault..) there was no pacing and drooling. Just a little hiding and shaking.

So yay?

Also Schen makes me look good in class. I don't practice out of class. Bad, bad.. I know. But 5 weeks ago he had no concept of stay. Last night he was in a sit stay whilst I walked to the far end and another dog was playing with the tunnel and another was doing recalls.

I had a nightmare last night that Leo had an Oops Litter with a Pitbull that jumped the fence, and I was having to take care of the 6 puppies by myself and find them homes.

About half way through the dream, I realized that Leo was male, and therefore I was going to have to bottlefeed them, and I was FREAKING out.

Then I suddenly remembered that Leo was neutered and this was all impossible.

It was so realistic too! I had puppies peeing everywhere, and they were whining and their furs felt so real. And I was posting on facebook groups trying to find owners for them.

All this to say, today I am happy that Leo is a neutered male and I don't think I would ever want to have to bottle feed a whole litter :rofl1:

I guess Lincoln didnt get that memo, because since he was taken off the IL and given a clean bill of health by the vet to go back to activity, his energy level and drive level have GROWN since the surgery ... isnt it supposed to be the other way around lmao?

Focus is MUCH better, a lot less distracted by other dogs, smells, etc , but flat out energy level? THROUGH THE ROOF. But I am not complaining IMO the more drive, the BETTER, BRING ON THE CRAZY.

Glitch loves to lay on his back when we cuddle on the futon. So here I am sitting in the dark on my laptop when one of his legs starts waving in front of the screen. I reach down to scratch his chest....and grab a big handful of whippet balls! Somehow he managed to do a 180 without me noticing and what I thought was a front leg was a hind.

The dogs are I are staying with relatives in Idaho for a week and my cousin's three year old daughter is absolutely enamored with Ru. We've been working hard with her on polite manners with the dogs and she's doing great with her own two and my cattledogs, but she can't seem to leave Ru alone.

I'm a terrible dog owner because I'm kind of letting it slide. Ru doesn't care as far as I can tell. I've been observing him very, very closely and he's just completely chill. He'll be sitting on my lap whole she nuzzles his nose and strokes his ears with her face in his face and he stays perfectly relaxed with not a lick or a blink or a whale eye. He's also super happy to see her as long as I'm not around, so I guess he doesn't mind being occasionally toted around like a stuffed animal. I continue to believe he is not really a dog and probably some sort of fancy lizard.
