The dog musing/vent thread

He does get around good for having a big ol' cast taking up his thin little leg, but just no fun not being able to do as much with him. He still tries to play like usual though, just have to keep him in check. :p

The vet thinks at least 8 weeks still. On his last x-ray, it was just starting to try to reconnect and heal - so it'll be a ways still. :o

You guys hang in there... Just give him extra snuggles while he heals.

I remember when Menchi injured her back...once she felt better it was hard to keep her down even though she was still healing. Silly dogs!

Guys this is for real. I am stressing about a big project at work so my anxiety and depression are waging a very real war on me right now (stress! the door is wide open! EVERYBODY IN THE POOL) and I legit am really driving myself crazy about this. I need to talk to dog people.

My next dog was going to be named Kane/Kaner after my favorite Blackhawks player, Patrick Kane. Another sport name to match my James Augustine and Walter Payton. But Kane is currently being investigated for alleged rape.
I am not trying to minimize what may have happened to this girl because rape is about the worst thing that can happen to someone, maybe even worse than death, but this is giving me a really hard time about if I should name my dog Kane anymore.
Innocent until proven guilty - and some people are frequently of the opinion that sports stars are often targets for false accusations due to huge sums of money flying around. He has not been charged with anything and maybe he won't be, and if he is maybe he'll still be found not guilty.
But is this all a risk I want to take..?
I'm so attached to the name, guys. But what if I name my dog after a rapist?? I will never hate Kane as a player, he was such a big player in bringing the cup back to Chicago and that won't change - I will always remember that he is a great hockey player - but I may hate him as a person. and really most people probably won't even get the reference and they will never know.

My second favorite player is Hossa and I just don't like the name for a dog. Seabrook is third and I like "Seabs" as the nickname but not sold on the name either. I thought about Crow (Crawford's nickname) but... Eh... The other name I really like is Toews/Toewser but no one outside of Chicago will probably ever be able to pronounce it. and I know Toews will never do anything to make me regret naming my dog after him! I'm just thinking about standing at an agility trial and the gate butchering it so I don't even know when I'm being called... "Toes?? Towes??" I considered always entering him as "Tazer" and just eff the spelling, I get the reference, but that bums me out a little.
No one will be able to pronounce "Teuvo" either... And Raanta is probably the cutest of the lot but he is no longer a Blackhawk...

Or do I just stick with Baby Kaner and remember I named him for the player, not the person actually wearing the jersey, and most people will never even know... Can I do that?

Guys like I seriously need to know what I'll name my puppy who is currently still sperm.

Walter Payton was such a good human being, guys. Even non-Bears fans loved Payton...

When is the breeding actually planned? What I might do is tentatively keep the name and wait to see what happens with the accusation (if there was plenty of time to do so).

I'd name him for the player, not the man.

So long as it's not a nation wide scandal (no naming a Pit bull "Vick"....), I think the majority of people won't know what Kane is in reference to. And if they do, they may not evem know about the rape allegations associated with the name. The people who DO know of that, I think, would be of the mind that naming for a player and his actions on the court/ring/field is different than naming for who the player *is* personally.

If all else fails, just tell him that you named your dog after the man who invented murder.

And that you're a bad speller.

:)

The breeding is planned for October so realistically I have months before the dog is born, let alone comes home with me. It may be months before anything happens with the investigation though (although I don't fully understand why, conceptually I understand the laws where it allegedly happened and why that make take time but OTOH if dude is a rapist he needs to be arrested.) One question right now is if he'll be allowed to play when pre-season begins at the end of September, even if no charges have been filed, so everybody appears to be expecting it to take awhile to get sorted. So it may still be looming when time comes to actually name the dog.

I did think about naming him Kane and if he's found guilty later, changing it...

I think a lot of people might hear me say his name and think it is Cain! It's not like Kane isn't actually a first name either - a friend's son is named Kane. Also it's the last name of characters in a book I read. It could be Kane for many reasons... I could just like the name... And I really, really do like the name...

I could use the Chelsea Dagger lyric "One For The Dagger" as his registered name and tell people it's because I think rapists should be stabbed...

Nothing to do with the name, just wanted to note that he played for the local junior team where I live and I met him a few times as I was one of the flag girls that skated around during the anthem lol. Same with Versteeg who's younger brother dated a coworker of mine. Small world.

LOL ice in Canada probably is a small world!! I love Seabs... so much.

A friend of a friend actually works for the Blackhawks - he told me he was actually assigned to "handle" Hossa during one of their autograph days. Hossa was apparently concerned about catching the flu from shaking everybody's hand, so the guy was like "why don't you do a fist bump instead?"
Hossa apparently replied - and I quote - "What is fist bump?"

HE IS SO ADORABLE I CANNOT STAND IT

So the guy helped show him how to do a fist bump and Hoss says "Ah. I like this fist bump."

UGH

I'm not taking Baby Hossa off the table, I know he would be "Hoss" most of the time (rhymes with Boss, for some reason, because Hossa does not.) I mean, for all I know baby puppy will arrive and his face will say MY NAME IS HOSSA.

I know nothing about any of these sporting folk, but I have to say I love the name Hoss. I don't think I know a single dog named that, and it is striking me as seriously funny tonight.

"Come along, Hoss"

THAT IS SO ADORBS!

The puppy my breeder is keeping is named after a hockey player. His name is Tuukka. He's kind of an asshole, very angry puppy, fitting for a dog named after anyone who plays for the Bruins.

My puppy is named Chef, I got looks of "that's so adorbs!" to "that's so lame..." at nationals over the weekend. Anyone who thinks it's stupid can suck donkey balls, Chefy is super cute and no one else has a dog named that!

Started Zoe on chemo yesterday for the **** soft tissue sarcoma that returned twice now despite clean margins. There is no option for radiation up here.

We're doing a low dose, and stopping if it causes any side effects due to other factors, but it feels wrong to feed her something I have to wear gloves to handle. The cancer isn't going to go away, but maybe we can keep it out of her lungs. I love my old girl so much.

So I've been finding fleas on Venice and picking them off for the last couple days.

Haven't told the boyfriend because I'm sure he'd be grossed out and wouldn't want to touch her or something.

Meanwhile I'm having her sleep in bed with us as usual. Dog people secrets...

I really just need to vent about this. I hate letting Addie out in our back yard. It has a whole bunch of shade trees, and she loves it, I love the back yard but UGH. We are responsible. We have a large run for her, but we also have a 50ft tie out for her. Either way we are out there with her or on the porch.

Our neighbors have two bully mixes. I love them, I think they are precious and they love playing with Addie. However, their owner refuses to tie them up, or put up a fence so they are ALWAYS over here wanting to play. I could care less that they are over. I have Addie, they are sweet and the three of them play great together. However, the neighbor yells at them so badly because they keep running over here. So, when we take Addie out, he has been putting his dogs in. It is such an uncomfortable environment and position to be in.

I wish i could just say Be respsonsible! If you want your dogs outside, put up a fence, use a tie out or SOMETHING.

I have resorted to checking to see if they are home before I let Addie out. Sometimes I don't care but sometimes my anxiety gets the best of me and I can't deal with the awkwardness and I just take her out front on a leash.

Yes, we are putting up a fence in October, but that won't solve the problem. It keeps Addie in, but won't stop them from running to the fence!

Man, I don't intend to humanize my dogs at all, but Rara is just so weirdly human and undog-like in a very acute way. I can describe her as highly emotionally sensitive, extremely observational, has APPARENTLY very complex thought processes, and comprehending the craziest things in our language that nobody ever taught her.

Such as knowing what the hell hearing aids are! My dad carelessly left his hearing aids on the kitchen table one time, and Lancer apparently stole them off the tabletop to somewhere unknown. When we came back, his hearing aids were gone. It could only be Lancer, because Rara is too small to climb the table.

My parents immediately started panicking and looking everywhere on the floor for the hearing aids. Lancer ran away in fear, since my parents were panicking, like he usually does. ;) During this process, Rara is just standing there being ignored, but watching.

A couple minutes later, Rara disappears... And as my mom was bent over looking under the couch, she hears a "clink" on the floor behind her. Rara had somehow obtained the hearing aids, KNEW what we were looking for, and dropped the hearing aids at my mom's feet.

No context for Rara at all, but I suppose she witnessed Lancer steal them and knew where he hid them, AND concluded what it was my parents were panicking about/looking for something.

Nobody taught her to find things. Nobody taught her what hearing aids are and nobody told her that they are expensive/important.

Or I can just say that Rara is insanely intelligent and weirdly human. And at the same time, scream "I DON'T MEAN TO HUMANIZE HER," because I am not doing it on purpose. :| The only thing she doesn't know how to do is talk.

For good measure though, Lancer is definitely a dog. He is a very dogs dog herding-obsessed, ball-obsessed dog who likes to lick the inside of your mouth, and is as thoughtful and funny and innocent as herding dogs usually can be.

Rara though is insane. Spooky!

That is all.

(I might have already written this story about the hearing aids on chaz a year ago, but I felt the need to reiterate it .___. Showing myself out now. )

I humanized Leo today, but in a completely opposite negative way ;)

"If you can make the association that you should avoid my bedroom like the plague when there is trash strewn all over the floor, then you darn well can make the association that YOU ARE BEING SCOLDED BECAUSE OF THE TRASH YOU THREW EVERYWHERE EARLIER!"

Seriously, I almost exclusively go into my bedroom to sleep. I wouldn't have noticed for hours except for the fact that Leo was walking suspiciously wide circles around it, and slinking away anytime I got too close to the door.

I mean, I'm a 95% positive reinforcement trainer, but I absolutely do believe that dogs (particularly grownup and smart dogs) can understand WHY they are being scolded for something in the past. If my dog can remember for over an hour that I said "Lets go for a walk" (he will carry on forever seriously) then he can also remember the trash he went through an hour ago.

Of course he can remember he did it. What he probably can't grasp is that if you walk in an hour later and get mad, it's because of what he did an hour ago vs merely the presence of the trash in your room.

If you don't believe me, do me a favor. Secretly go in and throw some trash around your room yourself, then leave and come home. I will bet you $5 that he acts exactly the same whether he threw the trash around or you did.

Interesting idea. I'll try it.

This is exactly what I had to tell my dad. He got so mad when his dog tore out the trash and I had him do the same thing. She enough- she slunk around the room like she was in huge trouble. I really believe that scolding/redirecting only works if you catch them in the act.

Which is unfortunate because Hugo tore out the bathroom trash last night.

I have to tell my parents the same thing, Josefina is a digger and they used to get so pissed at her when they would find the holes ... I was like geez, there are 3 other dogs! why automatically assume she was the one who did it!

And sure enough, when I went home, OH stayed here, and she didnt come and low and behold, there were still holes!!! So it wasnt entirely her after all.

Whenever I'm feeling especially sad or anxious Wilson comes up to me and rests his head on my shoulders and puts one of his paws on my arm. As if to tell me "hey, it's alright". This is usually followed by him throwing a toy at my face, as if he's trying to tell me "now stop being sad and play with me!". Which usually makes me laugh so I guess it works.
