Just a random thought: I've read like ten times this month between this forum and Facebook that people don't want Aussies cause they're too barky and loud. And I look at Journey, who is super quiet, and my friends' dogs, Rowan and Finn, who are super quiet and wonder if we lucked out and I'm in for a surprise next time around or what haha. Literally the only time I hear Journey is when she's playing chase games with other dogs or when we're at Flyball. Otherwise, she's dead quiet. Hmm.
Hahah I think all breeds get weird things like that. The comments I hear about boxers... and then I'm like uhhh that has not been my experience lol.

I thought boxers were insane until I moved where I live now and started going to the dog park. I don't know why, but I guess I had always heard that they were unfocused balls of energy that were slow to learn. We go to the dog park now and one of Hugo's best friends is a super athletic boxer. There are 4-5 there that are regulars and I like them all. Very fun, very well behaved, and not obnoxious at all.

I also wonder about people who say that and my experiences with border collies/aussies/acds, etc....

I'd take a herd of them over a GSD any day in regards to barking. Amiright?

So embarrassing.

As you all know Hank went for a jaunt yesterday after getting out of the yard. Apparently after a dude down the road and his GSD. He was doing donuts around the neighborhood and the GSD guy was like

'Oh wow that speed training I see you doing with him is REALLY working! He's so fast!'

Jee thanks. Yeah that was my end goal- have a dog run away and be so fast I can't catch him. lol

He did end up back in my back yard and was like 'THAT WAS FUN!'

Its so interesting how different people's perspectives are on different breeds, just based on everyone's own limited experience with small subsets of dogs.

The four GSDs I know the best are all super quiet dogs, who only bark when there is a stranger. I've also met some barky ones, so I know that's not a breed standard by any means, but just based on my own experiences I tend to view them as generally quieter dogs when it comes to the herding breeds.

I have a couple of very barky aussies at work. But the actual tone of the bark isn't that bad.

Unfortunatly, they taught Gimmick that barking is a fun part of play, and he has the most obnoxious bark ever. Its just a monotonous quack and it makes me want to choke him

Second round of antibiotics for Ru, after the super-concentrated urine test still showed some bacteria. The vet is also pretty sure that part of the issue is behavioral, and suggested a wee dose of prozac once we're sure the infection is cleared up, just because it wouldn't hurt.

We'd have to get it compounded though, because prozac doesn't come in bite-sized-dog doses.

I have my empty soup bowl sitting on the couch. Abrams keeps coming over and air licking about 3 inches away from the bowl. He knows better than to touch it, but apparently air space is fair game. LOL

My family GSD was pretty quiet, but she was reactive and would bark on walks and stuff. She wouldn't really bark for no reason or even a suspicious noise..it would have to be a knock at the door or doorbell.

Romeo used to be realllllly quiet and not alerty at all, but that's changed... lol. Now he's quite alerty (when the other dogs bark, he barks).

Fiona is not quiet, but mostly a complainer when I put her in her crate at first or in a bedroom.

I really want Cajun's metabolism to slow down lol. Getting kind of tired of feeding her 3.5-4 cups a day + training treats most days (which probably equates to another 1 cup) and having her not gain an ounce.

So I once again pose the question: HOW on earth did this dog end up so overweight at one point. Was she not allowed to move? Did she eat a whole bag of food every day?!

Riff's got the Aussie bark and it makes me want to die. lol

I've known some Aussies that weren't bad barkers, but I've also known (and heard about) enough barkers that to me, it's not just incidental. And I don't know if I'm willing to take the chance of getting a barker.

Riff's bark is also extremely loud and screechy and awful so that influences my decision.

Leo scared the heck out of me today.

We were walking completely by ourselves in the park, and I was in kind of a silly mood so I climbed up the slide and went down it. I did not notice (or EVER expect) that Leo followed me up the stairs! He put his front paws on the slide, slipped, panicked, and just LEAPED sideways off of the top of the slide. He jumped down from like 6 feet!

Landed well, ran around fine afterwards, but holy smokes, it scared me.

A lot of dogs really enjoy going down slides. We have a few at daycare, and it's always cute when they very deliberately get up on the play structure for the purpose of going down the slide. I learned with my childhood dog though, dogs can't do curly slides.

So our hike yesterday went from 9km to 13km because of some inconsiderate so-and-so's with their unruly off-leash doodle.

The fact that the dog was off-leash didn't bother me. It was their complete and utter lack of respect or care to control the dog. They were metres ahead of the dog while it's bouncing all over Cobain and Rigby and I'm yelling for them to call the damned thing.

Instead of taking the trail that would have led me right back to the car, I opted to go the other way so as to not be near them; as it surely wouldn't have ended well.

Re: the Aussie and BC barking stereotype, to me it's all relative. Compared to the sighthounds and my Shar Pei mix, they're barky as heck and so I might describe them that way if there was a casual breed discussion. The ones I have known have been barkers during play, and they don't need to be nonstop barkers for me to consider them "barky." It's also comparative to other sounds for me: I've found herders in general to be barky, compared to Dobes who are whiney, Pei who are groaners, Huskies who are singers etc

And speaking of that, yesterday I got to be surrounded by whippets and it was awesome - and funny, because there were a bunch of scent hounds and sighthounds, and you could totally HEAR when you walked in the building which side was which :D The whippets were all just so doe-eyed and polite and stable, all 20+ dogs from different kennels and different lines, that I wanted to take every last pointy dog with me....why don't I have a puppy yet?!

Cohen's barkbox is connected directly to her excite-o-meter. Her excite-o-meter has a hair trigger. I've been meaning to get it looked at.
