Does it have to be DOT approved? I mean, state wise? Of course it's best to get DOT approved (and Snell, I guess...depends on who you listen to) but I mean is it a requirement for your state?
There's a lot of people around here that put decals on their helmets. I don't think they do anything physically to diminish the protection.
Anyhow, as for a new helmet, I vote for a Scorpion. Awesome designs, awesome price, awesome stability. May not have as many options as Arai or even Shoei but all the same, a good, solid helmet.

I live in Canada, and DOT is law. You're not allowed to alter a helmet at all (though it's stupid, because you're absolutely right, it does NOTHING to alter the efficacy of the helmet's protection).
And you're totally right about Scorpion. They are awesome helmets. There's and AFX helmet I've got my eye on, but if it doesn't turn out to be as nice as I hope, I likely will go with Scorpion. What I'd REALLY like is a SHOEI, but I'm not droppping $700 on a bucket. Not right now anyway.
