The Amazing Popcorn Dog!

So here's Bailey, collie, age 5, who used to love popcorn. We would spend several evenings a week sharing a bowl. But then a while back I discovered that he was throwing up the next day and it was due to the popcorn. So no more popcorn, and the vomiting stopped. No problem.

So last night I had my bowl in my lap and Bailey was sitting next to me wishing I would just toss a piece his way. And then the bowl tipped and half the popcorn fell in my lap and onto the floor (it's a big bowl). Bailey jumped up, and bent his head down to grab it, as any dog would. But just at he was two inches from the floor, I yelled "Leave it!". And this amazing dog froze in mid-air, staring down at the mess of popcorn. Seriously! Two inches! He didn't eat a piece! I just think it's amazing, and one reason why I love the "Leave it!" command. Just thought I'd share about my amazing Bailey!opcorn:

thats so awesome!!!!! What a good boy!!! I just love moments like that when you know your training has paid off big time!!

I love the "leave it" command as well...Oakley sometimes pretends he doesnt hear though...i think it has ALOT to do with your voice...cause one time he picked up a piece of meat off the ground, and i got really scared for some reason, and yelled "LEAVE IT!" he just DROPPED it, and actually moved away from it...i have NEVER, EVER seen him obey it so well! I was soo proud!
I bet you had some sense of terror in your voice when it happened, that further enforced the command...or that is just my theory !

just make sure you arent using it TOO much when its not effective, or else squirt will just learn to tune it out. Kinda like i said in my post, the easiest way to get oakley to listen is to act like the object he has is going to kill him if he keeps holding on to it, especially if it really IS important that he drops whatever he is holding...

Good boy!
The command 'leave it" can save your dog from being poisoned by poisonous frogs or stung by a scorpion, bitten by a snake, etc. etc. Very important.

I always make following the "leave it" command worthwhile. Whenever I use it, I immediately jump up and reward with an exceptable treat. That way he knows there's something coming.
