Summer's eyes seem to be watering more since she had her botched surgery. I'm wondering if it's because she is missing a part of her eyelid near the tear duct or what.

anyways, she is getting really bad stains under that eye. Is there anything I can do to help keep it from staining so bad?

Poor Summer :(

Emma had tear staining when we first brought her home... she was fed Pro Plan and once her food was changed, the staining was better. She's on raw now and it's 100% not an issue anymore.

Summer's already on raw, though, right? Hmmm. I wonder if it is because of her eye surgery, since it's only on that one eye.

I wouldn't recommend the Angel Eyes stuff... since it contains an antibiotic.

Buttermilk powder! You won't notice results right away, but I prefer to use it over tetracycline, tylan, etc. Would also suggest wiping the area + drying 2x/daily (morning/evening) and adding a bitch of cornstarch to the area (with a toothbrush).

I'm sure more people will have suggestions.

I didn't hear about her botched surgery, poor Summer :(

Yeah they're both on raw. Honestly... Summer had terrible eyes when I first got her. I switched her to Evo and it was fine for over a year. It seems to have gotten worse since they started being on TOTW, but then switching to raw hasn't helped either.

She gets a little bit on her normal eye, but it's mainly the bad one that is the problem. Mia rarely ever has problems (she has black fur around her eyes that kind of makes it look like tear staining sometimes but it's really just her markings).

Summer's always teared up the worst out of all of ours. She has the most extremely built head though so I do kind of attribute it to that. She has huge, prominent eyes and a shorter muzzle than the others.

and adding a bitch of cornstarch to the area (with a toothbrush).
I know what you mean but this made me LOL. ;)

Thanks for the suggestions, we'll see if we can't get this under better control.

Ripley also had a very extreme head a large, prominent eyes that teared a lot. Best thing I can recommend for prevention (I have no idea for getting rid of the current redness) is keeping the area dry as much as possible. Ripley hated me, but I used to attack him with cotton balls and Q tips 3-4 times a day to dry that fur out.

Mia's head is so much nicer. She has a lot more nose and smaller eyes. She's never had any tearing problems at all....

I do still wonder if it isn't at least partially because of the surgery though. This is about a month after her surgery and you can see how bad it is here:

and day of, Poor Dear.

The stitches came out and then when they tried putting her under again she started having seizures so they never fixed it and she still has a gash in her lid. The vets were worried it would affect her ability to close her lid all the way.

I just look at pics from 2 years ago and there was NO tear staining at all. The only differences have been eye surgery and food... I've even contemplated trying Evo again even though P&G bought them out. But you would think raw would be best for that kind of stuff.

uhm... I know some Shih Tzu people who swear by putting a little dab of Vaseline just under the lower eye lid (with a Q-tip)

Bailey has different eye issues -- he has environmental allergies that manifest in red, runny eyes with some goopy stuff. Allergy pills couldn't stay on top of it (I switched from 4 Benedryl/day to 1 Zyrtec, and his eyes were still yucky at the end of the day).

Anyway, this (recommended by his holistic vet) has been a godsend -- I took him off of the pills completely! Animals' Apawthecary Eye & Nose Drops (You don't have to buy it there; my vet had it and I saw it in a couple of local pet boutiques. You should be able to get it cheaper.) You must try it!!!

I started using the drops 2xs/day for the first week or two. Then once a day for a few months and now down to once every two days. Bailey doesn't like it, but he likes the treats that follow and he puts up with it.

A probiotic may help. And maybe fish oil (but I like that for all dogs :)).

Well I washed up her face and you would have thought I was murdering her lol. What kind of probiotic do you recommend? I'm going to try a few things and see if that helps. I just am really stumped as to why this is suddenly a problem after being over a year tear stain free.

Does that really work? I always hear that, but I don't know anyone who actually does it...

I've heard giving them bottled water, adding apple vinegar into the water/food, etc.

Tsuki still has a little bit of tearing, but no staining anymore (unless they are really wet). I try to keep the fur around their eyes short and that seems to help. No grains (except biscuits still lol). I've heard of people putting chap stick under the eye/where it stains so that the tears will just bead off.

Well since I've been washing her face, her right eye hasn't teared at all but her left one is soaked right after I dry her eye. I'm pretty sure it is because of her surgery and since she has a gap in her eyelid. :(
