There is an Austin pug meet up in about 2 weeks on January 7th. Bubba will be about 11 weeks old then and I would really like to take him out to this gathering to socialize him and meet some new friends! Is this too early to have bubba out and about? I want to keep him as safe as possible from diseases like Parvo. He has had 2 sets of shots and will be having his 3rd a few days after the meet up. What do you all think?

From what I have been told and read, it really isn't very safe to have the pup meet others at this age. He should be at least 12 weeks old with all 4 shots. Also, for a while [ about 10 days ]after each shot their immunity system is at its lowest.

I think a puppy should be 16 weeks before exposure to other dogs. That is when they finish their puppy shots.

Too soon...he has to have all 4 of his vaccinations first. It's still a good idea to take him for lots of car rides and out to public places where other dogs don't frequent. Pugs in general love all people, dogs and things so socializing them is pretty easy to do with some simple precautions. I would also recommend a puppy training class. It's a really good way to socialize him and learn the best way to train your pup using positive methods.

Wow you guys get nailed there are only 3 puppy shots here. 6 weeks, 12 weeks, and 16 weeks. At 16 weeks they give the rabies.

I would honestly say no do not go. It is not worth the risk to your pup.

I have to be so careful with Faith because she is 3 weeks old and she has had nothing yet. No one touches her and anyone who I trust to touch her, must wash hands before and after. Even my kids!

Hard decision. Do you want to socialize your puppy? OR do you want to not take chances with diseases. If you take the chance, puppy might become infected with one of those diseases. If you don't, your puppy may not be the confident, social puppy that you had hoped for.

Thank you all so much for your insight! I've decided that it may still be too early. I don't want to risk hurting bubba just to show him off to people! And by the way... is it 3 or 4 shots? Bubba had a set at 6 weeks, at 8 and he will have his next ones at 10 weeks going into 11. Is this normal?

Different vets have different vaccine protocol. The vet I worked for started the vaccines at 6 weeks and they had a series of 4 vaccines. Each vaccine was given 3-4 weeks apart. Looks like your pup is getting them every two weeks. Just listen to your vet and take Bubba back when he says to come back and you will do fine. They should have their last vaccine around 4 months though - this is when they are old enough to carry immunity well. Public dog 'get-togethers' always make me a little nervous, because you never know if all the dogs have been vaccinated and parvo virus can live in the soil for up to a year after an infected dog was there. Just make sure Bubba doesn't eat crud off the ground.

It does seem to vary but both of my dogs had their six-week shots while they were still at the breeder's, then received another set at 8, 12 and 16 weeks. Rabies is usually given at the 16-week shot though I've heard of people waiting until 6 months for the rabies shot.

In Europe the last vaccine is at 12 weeks old, so go figure!

Either way, I wouldn't take him either. I really started socializing Tips at 16 weeks and it was not a problem at all.

This seems to be the process we are following. 16 weeks! Seems like an awfully long time to keep him under wraps. I pray that he will be socialable after such a long time away from doggie contact...

We had Maddy done at 6, 8 and 12 I think it was. We took her around to places in our arms at around 11-12 weeks. No contact with other dogs or animals though. We took her for walks in our arms, garden ect.

I wouldn't risk having a puppy out anywhere near where other dogs have been until they have completed their vaccines. Parvo and distemper can cause serious problems and can be fatal, it is just not worth the risk. There is plenty of time for socializing once the vaccines are done. First things first. Avoid parks and even your front yard, stray dogs can leave viruses behind. Even some animals like raccoons and skunks can carry canine viruses. Your first job as a responsible owner is to protect him. Then you will have all the time you need to socialize him properly.

Coco started socializing after he had all his shots. I really do want to go to a pug meeting somewhere in the near future, but I'm worried that despite his vaccines something might happen. you could call me paranoid... :p maybe I'll go with him to some pug meeting in January or February.

I would have to agree with Gallien .... I don't recommend doing it until he/she has received the rabie shot and all prior vac's.

Sorry, I should have clarified. When I said last vaccine, I meant last in the series. Most pups finish up somewhere around 16 weeks with the Rabies. I definitely agree with keeping him away from any other pups until a week or two after the final vaccine in the series.
