My dog Mono has been having breathing problems lately. Kind of as if he has asthma or something. It's like a wheezing but after a bit he's fine. Sometimes he does this before throwing up but he hasn't thrown up in about a year. Would anyone have an idea on what my dog might have? He's a french poodle.

Could it be reverse sneezing? Reverse sneezing looks kinda like this (it depends on your dog - Mu doesn't look like that when she does it). I was under the impression that it's pretty much harmless but when I googled it for that link it looks like there could be an underlying medical condition causing it.

Is he overweight?

I've heard overweight dogs wheeze/snort/make breathing noises because of all of the extra fat around the throat area/breathing passages.

Is he utd on heartworm meds?

I bet it's reverse sneezing. Tucker does it, The first few times I thought he was going to throw up, mom said it sounded like he was having an asthma attack. I believe swallowing helps them stop. It's not serious as far as I know, and fairly common. Tucker gets it from sniffing some things, I think pollen irritates him.

You can put dog reverse sneezing in youtube and bring up lots of videos to see what it looks like. This time of year I have to keep Benedryl on hand when allergies get bad.

If it is reverse sneezing, it's something all of my chihuahuas do. It's more common in dogs with shorter snouts. I usually block one of their nostils with a finger and it stops... or I'll rub their throats.

Lots of dogs do the reverse sneezing. King and Molly only do it about once every couple of years. My old Beagle did it daily, so did his two pups, their entire lives. The first time he did it, we kind of freaked out. We asked the vet, and he just laughed.

My chihuahua does this once and a while when he gets excited, eats to fast, or sometimes seemingly for no reason, which indicates that environmental factors (allergens, toxins etc.) may play a role.

Reverse sneezing, or honking, is a spasm due to "irritation of the soft palate," according to my dog's breeder.

Chihuahuas seem to get it the worse (to the point where they look like they're going to pass out sometimes) since they have small tracheas that are prone to collapsing.

Jessie got it right when she said rubbing the throat or blocking one nostril helps. Friends have also told me that they learned how to pull their dog's tongue to stop reverse sneezing instantly but I think I'll pass, since this problem seems pretty innocuous (although I can't imagine how scary it must be for the dog).
