There was a man in the grocery store reading a bag of Ol Roy. Figuring out if he was going to buy it or not. I wanted to tell him that the stuff is crap and direct him to something better.

I know ALL store brand dog foods are not great. Dogs are meat eaters, not corn and wheat eaters. Anyhow, my question is that what would be the best choice if you were buying from a store?

I know Ol Roy is the worse possible dog food you can buy.

I suggested to the man to read the ingredients and pick the dog food which has MEAT as the first ingredient. A lot of people here are farmers who have 7+ large dogs to feed, so they go CHEAP.

You might as well throw your dog some corn. Forget buying dog food.

Is Purina or Pedigree really any better than Ol Roy??

well like you said Its all crap.. To be honest I dont pay much attention to crap food, but I was reading the ingrediants while mom was grocery shopping once and the best one i could find was Purina One dog chow. However, I only got to read the top ingrediants. There may have been somwehitng in the bottom that I didnt see that causes cancer.

Meat In itself is to diverse of term to recomend when looking for dog food.

Is It Meat Biproducts in the top ingrediants? If so, thats no good.

Does it say (for example) chicken? Or chicken MEAL?

If its just chicken, and thats in the top ingrediants. YOu have to remember that that chicken should relly be at the botom of the ingrediants because once the food is cooked and processed, it looses most of the nutritional value.

YOu have to look for Chicken Meal, Turkey meal, Lamb meal, Beef Meal etc etc.

I've seen chicken meal before. I've also seen "biproducts" and I dont even want to know what that is. lol.

Thanks lizmo.

Wow, its amazing that dogs can even live off of Ol Roy. :yikes:

The Ol Roy skin and coat formula is the best one that they make...according to the ingredient list, it actually has meat in it (and no corn because it's for sensitive skin) maybe suggest that?

Ok. Never even knew they had a different kind!

Yeah, I saw it on the shelf one day and flipped the bag over, expecting corn, corn, and wheat lol...I was kind of shocked, I think it has lamb meal or something for the first ingredient. If that's the case, it's better than most the stuff Wallyworld sells at that price...though the Purina One is better yet.

how about Iams healthy naturals.

I know many dogs that are on it and do well.

Chicken, Chicken By-Product Meal, Brewer's Rice, Corn Meal, Ground Whole Grain Sorghum, Ground Whole Grain Barley, Chicken Fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Dried Beet Pulp (sugar removed), Natural Chicken Flavor, Dried Egg Product, Brewer's Dried Yeast, Dicalcium Phosphate, Potassium Chloride, Salt, Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, Beta-Carotene, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin A Acetate, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate (source of Vitamin B1), Niacin, Riboflavin Supplement (source of Vitamin B2), Inositol, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (source of Vitamin B6), Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid), Fish Oil (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Flax Meal, Apple Pomace, Dried Carrots, Dried Peas, Choline Chloride, Dried Spinach, Dried Tomato, Minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Potassium Iodide, Cobalt Carbonate), L-Carnitine, Rosemary Extract

Who would of knew that Ol Roy would add MEAT to their dog food. I never thought I'd see the day. LOL.

Honestly I think when it comes to food dogs are all different. My parents dogs (mine of course growing up ;) ) have always eaten Kibbles n' bits, no joke, and have all lived extremely long and HEALTHY lives, right now they have a mastiff/boxer who is 12 going on 13 and very very healthy.

That's the thing. There are a lot of people who fed their dogs all kinds of canned and dry food and their pets lived long healthy lives. Has something drastically changed in the last few years with the ingredients? We have no idea half the time what we're eating unless we grew/raised it ourselves.

When I was a kid (long time ago) our dogs very rarely went to the vet unless it was an emergency. They were all mutts but seemed healthy. Fed them Dr. Ballard's Canned Dog Food.

I second Purina ONE and the IAMS Natural.

I actually know quite a few dogs where the high-end foods didnt sit well with them and do extremely well on the *crap foods*.

It's kind of funny because I know people who swear the same thing... and really the only reason their dogs don't do well on the better foods is simply because they're feeding them too much. Dog does fine on Iams, they switch to Wellness or something and now the dog is puking and has diarrhea... and it's not because of the food switch, it's because they're still feeding the dog 5 cups or whatever each day. I thought the same thing with Juno, I couldn't understand WHY Taste of the Wild and Innova gave her diarrhea, but when she spent a weekend eating Eukanuba, she was fine.... turns out I just had to cut back the amount I was feeding her, and it settled itself. She still eats less than 3 cups a day and everyone thinks I'm starving her, but her body simply can't handle more than that. Now, if she were eating Ol Roy or something, I'm sure >3cups would be starving her.

Not to say overfeeding is the case with ALL dogs who don't do well on some of the higher quality foods, but I'd say it accounts for a lot of it... most average dog owners just plop a bowl of food in front of their dog and let them eat to their heart's desire.

well....
I no longer feed a natural, or holistic dog food. I studied long and hard and decided to feed Iams healthy naturals to Ruckus.
Ruckus has been either on raw, diamond naturals, or taste of the wild his whole life. He cannot gain weight, gets hot spots, and has diarrhea often. So I decided to listen to my vet, and make the switch. (no my vet does not sell Iams)

Ruckus has been on Iams only for a couple of weeks and seems to be doing much better on it. So I am a firm believer that for what ever reason some dogs just do not do as well on natural foods.

Lynn gets taste of the wild, because she is doing very good on it, and thats what I prefer to feed!

Thanks lizmo.

Pedigree ingredients are exactly the same. (the adult formulas). Even the foods shapes are the same. But, there is one food that is even worse.(Ifthat is possible). Look at the ingredients of a bag of Doggie Bag at Tractor Supply if you have one near. I would have to look again at all the ingredients, but the first on the list is wheat middlings. ????? I don't even remember seeing a meat listed at all anywhere.

One of my guys only does well on nutro or kirklands, and kirklands is such cheap food for a better quality. He was on blue and had diarrhea constantly

meat by-products are the "clean" parts of slaughtered animals, not including meat. I know right? They include lungs, spleen, kidneys, brain, liver, blood, bone, stomach and intestines freed of their contents.

Lots of people who switch to the better dog brands don't realize they are much more filling as Southpaw said. Some of those brands are also too rich in protein and other things which some dogs just can't tolerate and that's where the diarrhea etc. comes in. In other dogs the diarrhea etc. is just your dog getting rid of all the toxins in his body, which is a good thing. It can take awhile and that's why many people think the food wasn't good for their dog during this stage.
