Hello! I live in an apartment in San Francisco and am trying to decide on a dog. We currently have a 5 year old Welsh Springer Spaniel named Voodoo and he does wonderfully living in the city. We want a second dog and we are torn between the Stabyhoun and Kooikerhondje. We want to do agility, running, hiking, etc, would prefer a dog that is quiet/not a barker, not super senstiive to noises. What do you think are the main differences between the breeds?

Stabyhounds are one of the rarest breeds in the entire world, so they ARENT very common ANYWHERE, much less San Fran, lol. Kooikerhondje (I don't know the plural, sorry)! Are slightly more common.

I think these breeds are pretty different from each other. Kooikerhondje are spaniels from the sporting family, stabyhounds I believe are herders? A Kooikerhondje you could likely find a US breeder, stabyhound you'd almost definitely need to import, so consider things like quarantine, customs, etc.

Kooikerhondje I believe are a fair bit smaller. Considering their more recent jump in popularity I always assumed they had slightly less exercise requirements and possibly more of a biddable, sport dog type temperament, but I honestly don't know. Your best bet would probably look for breed specific forums, or to look up some breeders and start emailing them to ask about their breed.

I figured neither of them were very common so really nobody is going to know the difference between the two of them...

To the OP - What makes you interested in these breeds? You're obviously not going to find them very easily IMO. Are there common breeds you are interested in that aren't so.. complicated to find? I mean you could find them if you really want to but really nobody here is going to know what kind of dogs these are. Even I had to google them...

Today, I met a stabyhound. She was actually born in Commecticut, but the owner said she thought the breeder might only be having that one litter.

I haven't met either breed, but I've done a bit of research into both. A friend also visited a kooiker breeder thinking he might want one.

I think they are quite different breeds temperamentally. Stabys are more herding/general farm dogs who do some hunting. More calm and laid back. I imagine kind of like English shepherds on a basic level. Kooikers reminded me more of paps - kind of spazzy fun little dogs. My friend who visited the breeder said her dogs were nuts - pretty high energy and all over the place.

If you have a Welshie, I think both would probably work for you, since I have Welshies and I'm pretty sure I would enjoy both of those breeds as well. The staby will be a lot harder to get though. A different friend got on the waiting list for one and it's basically a national list and they let you know when a puppy is available. There are so few breeders that you have to go through the breed club rather than through individuals.

We have a Staby who comes to daycare occasionally. He's very mellow and very sweet, and my coworkers don't understand why I am so delighted with him.
