SOMEONE is throwing food over my fence

Oh Mia what a heart breaking story!

Becca.. let us know what you decide to do and the outcome.

Oh my goodness Mia... how heartbreaking.

Before we moved years ago to where we live now, we lived in the inner city. Crappy area, and we lived around a bunch of loons. I didn't own hardly the amount of dogs then that I do now, really it was just Audubon back then (I've had her for almost 8 years now), but I used to be really worried about one of the crazies throwing something into our fence to hurt the dogs. One of the crazy neighbors threw a stuffed animal dipped in motor oil over our fence one time, never did figure out why. Audubon didn't touch it, and I threw back at their house... onto their roof. Idiot.

Where we live now, our neighbors are more spread out. All know I own a ton of dogs, work in rescue, ect. They are all really great about it, and understanding. They know our dogs don't live outside, and won't bark at night, ect. And even though we live a good distance from each other, the neighbors on side of us know that I will not let my dogs out into the fence to go play when they have company over and are outside with their company. Or if I do by accident, I quickly call them in. This is so the dogs won't sit there barking at them, because really, a group of 12 dogs barking their lungs out at you from behind a farm fence can become really annoying, LOL.

Anyways, to the OP, I would just be more watchful from now on, and scan the yard with her when you let her out. Next time you find any bread or other food items in your yard, I would take them to the vet and ask to have them sent off and tested to make sure they don't contain anything.

Maybe it's just an idiot who thinks it's funny to throw food to the dog to eat, and may not be trying to intentionally hurt the dog. But I wouldn't take any chances.

i had a neighbor that threw over two porkchops complete with the bone. I saw my dogs chewing on something and ran out and pulled them both out of their mouths. I was livid. Two porkchops in hand i went next door and told them i knew they did it (it was their side of the fence, no street access, and that i would make a police report and see them in court if it ever happened again. THey denied it of course, but it never happened again. THey were the worst neighbors and big time dog haters.

Our neighbors many years ago got in the habit of throwing food over our fence, to where I started checking the yard before letting dogs out. Later we were cleaning our pool and getting it ready for the summer. Pulled out a squirrel that looked dead, but *somehow* it got up and literally launched itself over the neighbor's fence. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

A friend of mine was trail riding and they saw a squirrel carrying a Hot Pocket.....

I literally just LOL'd myself into a stomach cramp! :D

I placed a gorgeous little pit bull puppy that I had taken in (abandoned at the clinic after parvo diagnosis & treatment) and found it a wonderful home with my younger brother's best friend. Someone did the same thing to that puppy. The neighbor, who confessed to the police, gave him antifreeze laced raw meat twice in a single day. By the time Sonny got Cowboy to us, there was nothing we could do. He was basically D.O.A. Sonny never got another dog. :(

Crap like this happens all the time. In Sonny's case, his whacko neighbor didn't want a "vicious blood lusting pit bull" living next door to her and she was "afraid for her children's life" so she did what "any loving mother would do to protect her kids". And I remember quote for quote that those were her words. Mind you this was a 4-month-old puppy. She actually got charged with animal cruelty, but Sonny never got anything but his new dog's ashes in an engraved box that he keeps in his bedroom.

I would be super observant and comb the yard like a hawk before letting her out. I would also take the initiative and talk to the immediate neighbors about it. AND the next time it happens, keep the bread, put it in a ziploc container, and call your vet to see if they can send it off for testing. If it has been contaminated with something intentionally, I'd be all over the local news media letting it be known.

I wish you the best with figuring this out!

Honestly?
If Ella wasn't a pit bull, I might not have jumped so directly to someone trying to poison her. And if it IS someone throwing poisoned food over the fence, then it WOULD BE because she's a pit bull. Because I never just leave Ella out in the yard without being with her. She is ALWAYS supervised outside. The only time she barks is if we're playing, and I'm out there being just as loud as she is. So, it's not like I have an annoying dog who is outside barking the entire night or day.

My direct neighbors all LOVE Ella. My neighbors that we share a fence with, have two dogs of their own that they put out in their backyard ALL THE TIME.
I know, because these are the dogs that Ella tries to fence chase along the privacy fence. We live on the corner of our street. The way our house is, we have land on both sides of the house, and the back of our house meets with about 6-10' of space between our neighbors' house and our house. So, we have a neighbor behind us. The neighbors across the alley are an elderly couple who absolutely ADORE Ella. Everytime I'm out walking her, she HAS TO go greet them when they're outside, and they just love on her.

After I got done with my yard work yesterday, I marched over to the neighbors who we share the fence with. I asked the husband if he had noticed food in his backyard. Then I went on to tell him that I had found, twice, food in my backyard and that one of my biggest fears is that someone will try to poison my dog via poisoned food they toss over my fence because that is something people do to dog sometimes. He said he hadn't noticed his dogs eating anything, but he said that that doesn't mean anything because his dogs could have gotten it before he would have noticed it. I told him he might want to check his yard out before letting his dogs out because I had found food in my yard.

We're friendly with our neighbors, and I know neither him, or his family, would be throwing poisoned food over our fence.

Now we DO have neighbors down the street that are sketchy. I have a silent war going on with the bitch up the street that owns the shih-tzu that she CONSTANTLY lets out off leash.
But that woman has got to be, like, pretty up there in age. And she never leaves her house.

Hey Becca, I don't own an APBT (and never have) but I worry about poisoning too.

Even if I didn't own a "scary dobe" I would freak out finding food in the yard where Phoebe could get it. There are just too many people (adults and teens alike) that do sh!t "just because they can" and for no other reason.

Sort of like bullies that tie cans to a stray, just another hards days work to some sickos.

I truly believe none of my direct neighbors would do anything harmful, but we have an alley running behind our fence and any joe schmo can walk back there anytime of the day!

YEt another reason not to let your dog go out unattended even if you have a fence. If i hadn't been watching when mine went out i wouldn't have seen them grab up the porkchops.

I would be very worried about this too. Unless you see any type of animal leaving the bread on your yard, I would keep my eye out.

It could be nothing, but I'd be cautious too. Do your neighbors dislike Ella? It's a pain in the butt and unfair to you, but I'd go out and check the yard before letting her out if you can just to be safe.

Sort of like bullies that tie cans to a stray,

Wow. I've never heard of that! How disgusting.

And Chewbecca, just keep a vigilant eye on the yard and the next time you see the food, keep it and call your vet to see if they can send it to have it tested. It will cost you a little bit of money, but IMO it would be worth it to know.

I hope this stops soon for you and your dog's sake. :)

Ya that would SERIOUSLY freak me out. We had a lab mix named Sasha who was poisoned by our neighbors. They soaked a piece of raw meat in anti-freeze and chucked it at her. Unfortunately no one noticed that she had eaten it until it was too late. We lived out in the middle of NOWHERE in New Mexico so there was no way to get her to a vet in time... my step dad put her out of her misery and sat outside holding her and crying for such a long time. I wouldn't wish that on any dog or family.

I totally feel your panic Ella. One of the parks I walk Duke at I have to constantly scan the ground ahead as a few times we have walked past entire bones and chunks of meat. If I have a bag on me I get Duke to sit and wait while I pick up the bone or whatever and then chuck it in the garbage when we get a chance.

In my own backyard I never leave Duke unattended. Our neighbors on one side love Duke and have known him since he was a puppy, however the other neighbor is a little wacky and we've had an ongoing war as she routinely likes to scream at Duke when he is in the backyard at 8pm doing his business for making too much noise:rolleyes:. This and she often keeps her dog outside at night in a pen who barks constantly. Anyways as much as were not in the wrong Im certainly not willing to take any chances with her.

Teaching a strong leave it as a back up is a nice idea too, incase you haven't already.

Best of luck,

Kayla
