So what is the past tense of "ding"?

My mom, my sister and I are in the kitchen, and my sister is making cookies. She was distracted by something, and then saw that the oven had preheated and said to my mom: "You didn't tell me it dung!" and my mom and I started laughing. So what is the past tense of ding? Is it dung? Dinged? lol

I think it's one of those words that no matter what you say, it just doesn't sound right. Could you say "It rang?" My oldest son used to have friend whose last name was Foote and I always wondered if that was your name, would you say "We're the Footes" or "We're the Feet?" They both just sound so wrong.
