I recently got some raw bones (rib bones I think) for shadow from the butcher.

I froze them first as advised (but now im worried not for long enough) and gave one to shadow on thursday. First of all she wouldnt touch it, looked at me like "what the hell is that?" but after smelling it and licking it for a bit, she really liked it, only took her half an hour before she devoured it, Im not sure what bone it was, it was bigger than a rib bone, with quite a bit of meat on it, I believe it was pork.

Anyway, I decided to leave her a raw bone when I went to work on friday. Nit thinking I gave her half a rib cage  , so it was like 6 rib bones. I know it was stupid to give her so much, my brain was obviously not turned on that day.

When I came home from work I found she'd been sick, twice, usually she tries to eat it after she's thrown it up, YUK! But this time she hadnt. Since then shes been off her normal food, she'll eat treats, or whatever im eating, but not much of her normal food. She had a spat of this about a week ago, then her appetite came back with avengance, at the time i put it down to the fact she'd just been spayed.

Do u think the reason she was sick was because I gave her too much of a new thing (the raw bones?) I havent given her any since.

Do u think this is why she may be off her food?

I dont give her anything else, no more treats than usual, and not much of my food. Thing is I feed her after I've eaten, so I put the last bite of my meal in her bowl. She'll eat that but leave the rest.

Help?

was it pork? i didnt see if it was...

it is most likely too much of a good new thing - many dogs when switched to raw will get diarrhea with the change of diet - its like switching kibbles - you need to take is slow and gradual!

how is she now?

i agree that it is probably a case of too much of a good thing all at once. :)

for one, she's not used to digesting raw materials, and bone is more difficult than just bonelessmeat, and two, she got quite a large amount all at once.

is she otherwise acting normally, drinking, and going potty?

She seems to be ok now, eating her food as normal. Shes going to the toilet ok, but her stools are weird, more white in them, and chalky ish. Thats prob the digested bone?

I think she's just being fussy with her food, I put it down and she wont eat it straight away, and I cant take it away from her to teach her that she eats when I give her food, because I put it down before I go to work in the mornings, and then Im not back for 8 hrs. And i think it would be a very harsh lesson to take her food away from her for 8hrs?

She eats in the evenings, prob because she gets some leftovers in her bowl with her food, obviously it depends on what we have. Maybe thats it, Im shooting myself in the foot cos I give her extra nice food in the evening, then her plain normal food in the morning. I have been mixing some beef broth in with her food, it worked for a while, she'd wolf it down, now shes not bothered by it. What could I give her in the mornings to arose her appitite? She has dry eagle pack, with naturediet wet food, and i have been pouring some beef broth onto it aswell, I've also got some liver powder which I used to sprinkle on her food, but again, shes not bothered by it anymore.

She'll have usually eaten her food by the time I get home from work, she prob snacks on it throughout the day. Is that ok? I think the bones gave her an upset stomach, and put her off her food for a while, she was quite quiet the day after to, she seemed subdued, prob had a bad belly, she seems to be ok now thou. Back to her boisterous self!

a few things -

the stool is normal, shes adjusting to the new food and raw fed dogs typically have small, firm stools that turn white and disintegrate.

second - i would not leave raw food out for her when youare not home. she will NOT suffer - my dogs dont have food for most of the day - they get fed at two separate times (approx 5 am and then again at approx 8 pm) and they have NO food in between - they do just fine (i wouldnt recommend this for a puppy or a very tiny dog, but your staffy is neither of those, right?). besieds, raw food can get pretty gross being left out for so many hours, if its very warm out.

if she is getting yummy things in the evening, it may just be she doesnt WANT the kibble in the AM!

its very hard for some dogs, depending on their personality, to adjust to going back to something "plain" and monotonous like kibble, if they are used to eating yummy things like people food, raw, etc. we spoil them too much sometimes :)

I agree with that, the last time i made a cooked dinner shadow had one too, cooked beef, peas, carrots, mashed potatos, yorkshire pudding and gravy. It was a special treat for her, but talk about spoilt! :)

they can go either way... :D

my dog's been raw fed for quite a while now, yet he will steal the kibble from the bowls of other dogs at friends' houses. i guess it's like junk food to him. but then he's the kind of dog who will eat almost anything. lol
