Like I announced earlier this month, I was hired for a job at a local amusement park. This amusement park is large, very busy, and I'm guaranteed the work will be strenuous. I work 40 hours a week, get 2 days off and...

I'm getting 4 dollars an hour. Below minimum wage. Way below. Now before you ask if it's illegal or anything, apparently, it doesn't apply to me since I'm below the actual working age.

So, I'm thinking... should I stay, work really hard for $4/hr... or should I apply for other jobs, mow lawns, and do something else for money?

I've been thinking about this and I have until the week of June 15th to decide. All suggestions are welcome.

Do not work for $4/hr. It is illegal for them to pay that much, and even more illegal for them to hire you if you aren't of age!
If you do work for them, you're just saying child labour is ok. And it's not! Yes, mow lawns, do landscaping, pooper scoop backyards, but don't let a corporation exploit you like that!

My opinion is your time is worth more than that. Some of our provinces have that same minimum wage crap that if you are under a certain age you get paid yes. That's bull as far as I'm concerned. I think you should be paid for the work and effort you put in not your age.

Anyway, look around. See if you can find soemthing else you like. If something comes up that appeals to you - take it. If not you can fall back on that other job ;)

Do you get free admission or anything?

if you don't mind the work for 4$ then stay but if you think its to hard for that little then go do lawns. Look extra sweaty and people feel bad and pay you more:p

Haha, thanks all. Honestly, I don't care if it's illegal or not... I'm 15 (in my case, 8 months below the actual working age) it's not like I'm six years old and they're hiring me... and I need and want money. So if I have to work at this damned amusement park then I will.

But I'd like other suggestions, even comments... thanks everyone.

If you don't mind doing it and need the money and can't find anything better then do it. As long as you 'enjoy' it then I don't see a problem.

While I would keep looking for a job that pays better, I wouldnt burn any bridges yet. The pay for that job really sucks but, hey, money is money. I'd take $4/hour if nothing else was available.

I would mow lawns and offer lawn and garden care. Better and no worries about legalities

On holiday?

No child of 15 should be working 40 hours a week in my books.

Fair enough - a weekend job. The odd day here to get some pocket money - but 40 hours!!

I am shocked!

It's June. I'm pretty sure his school year is pretty much over. I worked a lot of long hours when I was a kid. Weekends during the school year and full time during the summer. At a llama farm!

It's summer time for me... as in 2 months no school. I think that's up to the child.

Ok. I knew as soon as I posted that I shouldn't have said child - you are not a child.

But - I still would be totally against any child of mine (child as in produce of my womb ;) ) working 40 hours a week at age 15.

I ALSO worked when I was 15 - but there would have been noway my mum would allow me to work that LONG for that LITTLE. Do your parents know the score? What do they say about it?

Crikey - you'll be old and have all kinds of money problems before you know it. Enjoy your freedom - get a weekend job and have fun having time to SPEND it!! :D

what will they pay you if you come back next year? and are you likely to have a summer position if you want it? I know the grocery store Hyvee around here hires your age but only allow so many work hours a week. Lawn mowing more and more is a big business around here. I can have someone show up and mow my yard with their mowers and they trim too for 25 dollars. It isn't even worth having mine fixed since that is what i would pay one of the neighbor boys to cut the grass. If you do stick out the season you will have a reference for being reliable and that counts for your next job. Many places frown on job hopping. Just some food for thought. Dont feel to bad, when i started doing the kennel work I got 5 dollars a day for cleaning the kennels, later that doubled when he put in twice as many runs) plus a dollar a dog to train, a pup, and my dog food free. Probably worked out to be about the same or a little less:rolleyes: old boss was a cheapskate when it came to cracking open that wallet of his.

I would look for something better, but don't quit the one you have until you've found something else.

It's very common to work hours like that during summer break.
