Personaly I would have vetted. but these are farm dogs. Not pets (to them). Expendable. They had amazing lives for farm dogs, and at least they didnt suffer.

i spose as long as it WAS a quick, painless thing, I wouldn't have much issue with someone else doing it.

But that's not how I would chose my dogs to die. Well, they're going to live forever anyway, but I'm just saying....

I also did not know that little tidbit that you can't bury an animal after it has been euthanized.
I think it just depends on local laws. We give our clients the option of whether they want to have the dog cremated (we have a crematorium on site so it's only like $30 unless you want the ashes back, then it's $100) or to take it home.

The not burying thing was from my vet in Arizona - any euthanized animal has to be cremated or placed in a "proper" area such as the city dump... :( this was in a rural area where there's lots of critters that might dig up a dead animal to eat. I'm pretty sure this is local law, but I'd have to look it up, I know the vet was adamant about me not burying the dog if she were euthanized.
I lived in a residential area, that's why I took our dog out to my grandparents ranch - and we weren't allowed to bury anything in our yard on the military base - they have the same rule here that if your pet passes away you have to contact the base veterinarian and have it properly disposed of.
Some places it is illegal to euthanize animals by shooting them and they have laws/ordinances against it, I read something about it not too long ago, I'll see if I can find the place.

Found a link that talks about euthanized animals and their burial - consequences to local wildlife, etc.

In 1999, a veterinarian from northern New Mexico euthanized two mules owned by a rancher in Colorado, leaving the carcasses on the rancher's land. Five golden eagles and two bald eagles died after feeding on the carcasses. The rancher and vet were fined $10,000 each for violations of the federal Endangered Species Act that resulted from the improper disposal of the mule carcasses.

I don't really agree nor do I disagree with shooting a dog in pain. I would never "put my dogs to sleep" that way, although I don't necessarily think it's cruel or anything.

I think a quick and relatively painless death is better than letting a dog suffer.

We had that problem trying to put one of our hamsters down. She'd had 2 strokes the first she basically recovered from, though she was always a little handicapped and the second she was seizing afterwards. It took forever to find a place to put her down.

anyways, I don't have a real problem with it but I would not trust myself to do a good enough job with any of my animals. I don't want to cause them pain.

I think for us it would depend on the situation. If it was something that was foreseeable, I would definitely take them to the vet.

We have put several animals to sleep with a bullet but they would not have made it to the vet. We live in a rural area and people are constantly speeding down our road bcs they won't get caught. We have seen several animals get hit by cars and the result is not pretty at all. My husband has often walked down and put them to sleep in the middle of the road so that we don't hurt them more by moving them. Then he will bring them back to our house for a burial. We have 3 acres so it's no a problem.

So I guess what I'm saying is that I personally find it preferable to have a vet do it but in emergencies I would rather the animal be at peace instead of pain.

^^^ I agree. Sometimes it's not forseeable (is that a word lol)

Sometimes it is an emergency and can be more humane than taking them to the vet especially if you live far away from a vet.

that said I honestly don't think I could do it. I could not be the hand that pushes the plunger on the needle and I could not be the hand that pulls the trigger. it's just not in me. I am not strong enough to step up in that way.

But it was said on the other board by many people that it should be labelled as abuse and they should not be allowed to have a dog ever again. Well I think that is a little much really. After all they don't label owners who have their dog injected with chemicals to get to the same end result as abusive even if the dog is not on it's death bed.
