That is totally ridiculous. So what happens now? Are teenaged girls who get involved with older guys now statutory rapists because they also chose to do it?

If a kid is sending nude photos of themselves around, that should be between the kid and their parents. If recipients of the photos did NOT want to see them then maybe yeah that could be harassement. But sheesh. Our country is going mad.

Well... I had a job at 16 that paid enough for internet and a cell phone. We don't know that these teens that are swapping nude pictures don't have jobs that pay for their cell phones. Not even sure why that was brought up... that's not going to stop teens from being teens.

Yeah I think it's ridiculous too. Do I think teens should be sending nude pictures around?? NO but I certainly don't think that makes them a sex offender. Everything else comes off their records when they turn 18 except for that... just because a girl flashed her boyfriend some boob and I'm sure he wasn't begging her not to lol.

Teens do stupid things... I'm sure we all have done stupid things as teens... and if you say you didn't then you are in serious denial lol.

I think the whole sexual predator registry is so mismanaged. ADULTS who molest and rape children need to be on there... teens who are exploring their sexuality with their b/f or g/f don't. buddy who streaked at the football game on a dare... doesn't need to be on it. Squated and peed outside? you don't need to be one it. and it's ridiculous that any of them are. If you rape people, molest people and hurt children... THEN you are a sexual PREDATOR. I fyou flash your b/f... you are NOT a sexual predator.

I guess we will have to disagree then, I had a stay at home Mom who spent tons of time with me, and very involved Dad... I became pregnant at 17 and it was NO reflection on my parents. I do not agree that all these kids come from bad homes... Teens make mistakes.. always have.... and I cannot imagine having a mistake like this cost you a normal life... Being registered as a Sex Offender? Way over the top....
I agree 150% it makes no difference how much the parents spend with the kid. Any kid could have posted those pics. Little Sally from the burbs with the June Cleaver mom and understanding dad might just want to treat her boyfriend to his own private peep show. Its call hormones and acting before thinking.

Also I had a bestfriend in high school whose mom searched her room weekly and just was up her butt 24/7 about everything. And my friend was a good kid never did drugs or anything wrong. But because her mom sheltered her so much and accused her of so much she finally decided she might as well start doing what she was accused of. And she came from one of those "Family" home.

I never had a curfew. Was never grounded. Nothing. And my mom worked 40 hour weeks on the night shift so I was practically on my own through high school. And guess what? I never did drugs in High school. And I mean NONE. I didn't have my first SIP of beer until I was 19! And didn't try a cig until I was 20! and I didn't have (consentsual sex) until I was nearly 18. Never got detention. Never got suspended. Never even was called into the principles office. EVER. And I came from a very sick home enviroment.

Once again the amount of time spent with the parents doesent matter. It depends on the individual teen.

Lord have mercy...what a completely asinine thing to do to yourself. That will look FABULOUS on a college app...your nude pics that EVERYONE has seen. LOL. How sad that people think they need to be naked for people to pay attention to them.
So would it be better to attach nude pics that not everyone has seen to your college app? Why are you attaching nude pictures to your college app at all? Forget to write an essay?

What happens to them at home doesn't ruin the rest of their lives . . . they only THINK it does ;)

This is an egregious misuse of sex laws.
DITTO this.

Also, like sparks (i think) said... many teens have jobs and can pay for their phones.

And it doesnt matter how much your parents are around, unless they literally never let you out of their sight, they cant prevent thig... a pic can be taken in mere seconds... jump out of the shower, snap pic... gonna shower with your kid until their 18?

Honestly, I think the embarrassment these kids face when the pictures get around is punishment enough.... if the school wants to impose some small punishment because of the disruption FINE... if their parents want to ground them until they marry, FINE... but facing real criminal penalties is wrong. Although, I have yet to see a case that actually succeeded... because it just doesnt really fit the elements.

Never let yourself be fooled into thinking you have any sort of control over your kids after they reach *that* age.
My mom did. I respected her and cared about what she thought and still do. There was *one* time that I almost got caught with pot in HS. What terrified me the most is not what the law would have done to me--I didn't even think about that--but how my mom would have reacted. We definitely clashed--but at the end of the day, no matter how much of a bitch I thought she was being, I still had respect for her.

I also disagree that the way someone parents has nothing to do with how their kids turn out. I have 8 younger cousins from three sets of parents all in somewhat similar economic situations (upper middle class to lower upper class), and I grew up watching them parent. Their kids are now anywhere from 15 to 21 and I can tell you that those kids are a *direct* result of the parenting they received, and range from kids that are frugal and do volunteer work rather than get jobs to kids that are spoiled rotten to kids with generally troubled lives and relationships. It is not going to be like that in all cases, but it *does* make a difference.

As to the OT--I do think that it is going to far to give them a sex offender designation--not only is it a bit harsh IMHO, it just waters down the meaning of "Sex Offender."

I think that a lot of idiot teenagers need to get it through their heads that the ENTIRE WORLD can see what you post ANYWHERE on the web. That means your dad, your potential boss, your teachers, your fiance's parents, your grandparents, your priest, anyone. Yes, I know that all teenagers are brainless at one point but it takes a special kind of stupid to record yourself committing a crime (or take naked pics of yourself) and then post it on the web......

lol yes the old "just you wait" I mean why wish bad things on people just because they don't agree? How about letting ME parent, and seeing where we end up in ten years. I promise I will let you say I told you so when Lily is pole dancing on the strip at age 17 1/2...since that is what some here appear to almost HOPE. lordy.

It's teens being teens. Since forever and a day, teens have been exploring sexuality. They just have new ways of doing it. It's the parents' job to speak with their kids and explain the ramifications of doing something like this--it is NOT the government's job to ruin these kids' lives for doing something I'd imagine 50%+ of high school kids do in some way/shape/form.

Whoever posts these pictures on the internet is a different story--that's not okay (unfortunately, it's not really traceable either). But sending your boobs to your boyfriend? The only reason people didn't do it 20 years ago is because your MOM would have developed the film at the drug store.

That is not how I read it. I read that they can turn out like that EVEN if you are good parents... not that they will.

I too have seen it go both ways with great parents having horrid kids and horrid parents have the nicest kids. There has to be more to it than JUST parenting. SOme of the worst kids I know had over protective parents.. hover mom types. They WERE good through high school.. but holy hell when they got to post secondary....!!!

I think the whole teens are worse now thing utterly silly. My mom did lots of family tree research.. Even back in the good old days girls got pregnant as young teens. They then had to marry the guy, but it didn't stop them from making bad choices.

Why ruin a persons life for pretty much no reason. If you take nude pics of yourself, and it gets out... you already have no one to blame but yourself.

I can't see how a parent would want to destroy their childs chance at a normal life for a silly harmless bad choice!!

And my child does have net access (under supervision...) and will have for some online games and for school research. He's 8. I would rather he learns to use the tools necessary for getting good grades.... than have to wait till he has a job to utilize them!

While i do agree with you about it not being a sex offender registry type situation (I agree with you, can you believe it?:D), I don't think that it is exactly harmless. It is the type of thing that can cause enough trouble for a girl that I could easily see her having to change schools or something from the humiliation. Plus it very likely will follow the girl to college, even a future job--not too many schools out there falling all over themselves to hire young teachers with naked pics on the net.. But again, it's an action with a consequence built in--I don't see the need to label the girl as a sex offender and waste time and money on the legal process....

I agree. HBH I think that was a little over dramatic. I don't think anyone here is hoping your children are going to become out of control sex fiends... but I"m pretty sure you already knew that ;) But I also don't think it's fair to assume the worst of the parents because a teenager did somethign stupid. LOL teenagers doing something stupid when their parents have their backs turned even when they are good parents is not unheard of. I had wonderful parents but I did stupid things... things that I didn't think were stupid at the time but looking back realize they were totally stupid.

and Peer Pressure is a very powerful and influencial thing in teen life. Not every teen gives into peer pressure all the time but I will bet that most have given in to peer pressure at least once. The pressure to smoke, have sex, try drugs, moon the principal, skip school... whatever. Peer pressure is very powerful and it's not usually used for good unfortunately.

I know I am frequently guilty of thinking "What the heck is wrong with teens" but when I think about.... I would NOT want to be a teenager again for anything. You're at one of the most awkward times in your life, you are having feelings you don't fully understand, hormones and body changes are happening all the time and you don't know how to regulate them, your friends are doing things and wonder why you aren't, etc etc etc. it's hard being a teenager sometimes it really is and I would not go back to that for all the money in the world to be honest.

that is taking it entirely too far... no one said this.

People are trying to point out the fact that no matter how good a parent is, a kid can make a mistake and there isnt a reason for it to follow them for the rest of their life.

No one said your kid is going to do anything...

Maybe.. but I doubt it. If you are not caught (and have a record) its not likely going to cause huge issues. I have a few examples in mind where people (girls) got caught doing things/pics of doing things.... Their lives were rocky for a bit but no long term effects.

If you post pics of yourself where people can see them.. the punishment will fit the crime on its own.
