Ok...so, we all know that males have to pee more often then females (I'm talking about dogs :D)...But...since we don't have the whole time in the world to take Oscar outside 10 times a day (I know..I'm exagerating), is there anyway I could teach him to hold himself? We take him outside 5 times/day. Isn't that enough? I know I have to be patiente..he only is 4 months old, he eats more often and that is why he has to go out often...but, in time, could he be teached to hold himself? (for example we took Amira out 2 times/day and she didn't have a problem with that, but when she was a puppy I guess we took her out more often...I can't remember quite well)
Thanks

well I think two times a day is way too little :yikes: I didn't know males have to go out more than females. Once he gets older he should be able to hold it longer but while he is young it's best you take him out as much as possible so he housebreaks. what breed is he? small puppies also have to go out more often then large ones. My adult male dog at 65 pounds went out 5 times a day, I would never have made him go less. He went in the morning, when i got home from school, after he ate dinner, one during his walk and once before bed. if he had eaten at another time he would have gone out after that too. My Aunt's Shih-Tzu adult female goes out the same amount. As a puppy he should go out more. Once he gets older 4-5 times should be good IMO. I'm not sure how often others take theirs out though.

I take my dog out about 4-5 times a day, and I agree, I wouldn't do less. One of the joys of puppyhood is that you'll be spending lots of time outside with your dog pottying!

Well...I remembered that you should take a puppy out after he ate and after he gets up from his nap...Don't know how true is that...
Oscar is 4 months old...Another problem is that we aren't home all the time so that we can take him more than 5 times/day...
For example..now (and he does this for a couple of days now)...we have him for almost 2 weeks...Like I was saying...today..I took him out at 14.00..ok..he peed and everything...at 18.30 I got ready to take him outside again and right before we prepared to go out the door he started to pee (a lot)....and then after I cleaned up he peed again (a lot) right after he went out the door ( and we weren't outside...we were still inside the block)...
Then...at 19.55 I went for just about 20 min. and when I got back home..he went to the door ( to greet us) and he started to pee again ( a lot). I don't even know where he has so much in him:yikes:??? He didn't even drink water after he came the last time in the house...and we didn't feed him anything...
I don't know..I'm starting to panick (sp?)...don't know how to teach him not to pee in the house

You see, it's not that you're teaching your puppy not to go potty inside, you're actually teaching him to go outside.

So, the basic idea is that you need to minimize pottying in the wrong place (inside) and encourage pottying in the right place (outside). If you catch him pottying inside, pick him up right away and take him outside as fast as you can. Usually (but not always) picking up a puppy will make him stop pottying. If he potties outside, you should reward that with anything he really likes - treats, toys, attention, etc.

Yes, he'll need to go potty after he eats and drinks (usually about 15-30 minutes after, more or less), and as soon as he wakes up (even after a nap), and when he's really excites (like when you walk in the door). You'll need to closely supervise him to make sure you can catch all accidents, and if you can't supervise, he needs to be confined, the easiest way is with a crate.

For more info, you can read the Stickys at the top of this forum that are about potty training.

I don't think there is a rule about males peeing more than females...

LizzyBeth covered it. Teach your dog to go to the bathroom outside. In time, he will start to hold it for longer periods. Right now, you need to take him out at least 5 times/day.
