I think I shall be joining the group of people who keep their dogs' collars off when they are home. This morning Fable was in her crate and partially dislodged the divider (I didn't have it set up straight). She was happy to be getting out for a morning pee and run, so was thrashing about excitedly.
Then she didn't come when I opened the door of the crate. I have a bunch of junk on the crate and couldn't see her, so when I bent down I saw her collar was caught on a hook of the divider. She was pulling away from it but couldn't. I bent around and tried to pull the divider toward me but the hooks kept catching.
She wasn't making any sound, just opening and closing her mouth. My mom brought me scissors but the collar was so tight I couldn't fit the blade under. Soon she stooped struggling altogether and scared me so much. Lucy popped into my mind and I was just thinking I'll be damned before I lose my puppy, too! FINALLY I was able to twist myself in the right position to yank and turn the twisted part of the collar off the hook. (That was the first thing I tried but couldn't.)
She stood dazed for a second but then ran to the backdoor to be let out.
I was just terrified. It lasted about a minute but seemed to go on forever. I've always wanted it to be clear how to get my dogs back home with their tags if they escaped, but I took Fable's collar off and it's been off since.
I'm just so glad my funny little idiot dog is okay! <3
