Saw a dead GSD on the road today. :(

I was driving, had just dropped Jackson off for his dental surgery, and saw something on the side of the road. From a glance, I thought it was a deer. Then I glanced again and was like "is that a dog?!" so I stopped and did a u-turn and sure enough... a gorgeous GSD. It was dead, as far as I could tell - did not even see shallow breathing.

But I called Animal Control who said they hadn't had it reported yet, so thanked me for calling. It makes me REALLY sad to think that someone probably just hit him and left him there, and did not even make a phone call.

I wanted to cry, it was just so incredibly sad. What a gorgeous dog, too.

BTW, I am sooo sorry to see your signature. I had no idea that Lucy had passed. Where have I been? I feel awful and now I sit here with tears in my eyes. I loved hearing about her and seeing her pictures.

I hate that. I've had that happen to me twice, happening on a dead dog - once was a pug on the side of the freeway and once was what looked to be a chocolate lab on the side of a rural highway. Called them in each time. Such a shame.

The one that killed me was when I was about 16 and on my way to a fair I saw a GSD in the middle of nowhere sniffing around 10 feet off in the brush on the side of the road. I saw a couple driveways and just assumed he probably belonged to someone right there.

On my way back home I saw his rainsoaked body on the side of the road. Since that point I stop, no matter what when I see loose dogs near roads. Since then I've picked up six dogs, only one of which was according to the owner "doing what he normally does" all of the others had wandered from home, in one case over ten miles following the highway.

Oh gosh, such sad stories. Our neighbor's jack russel was outside this morning and saw me and Strider on our other side of the road. He darted across to say hi, and almost got plastered. Thank goodness the lady was driving slow. When I saw him start for us I waved for her to stop. So glad she was watching.

Oh, this is so sad. I've never seen a dead dog on the road and I hope it stays that way. I've seen wild animals; javelina, coyotes, snakes, rabbits, etc., and that was bad enough.

I ****in' hauled ass after a greyhound for 3 goddamn miles, and people actually were yelling at me, calling me stupid for letting my dog loose and saying "Hey lady! Your dog is gonna get hit by a car!" Finally got it off of the highway and down onto a rural street, called the cops, and then watched them try to get it for at least 15 minutes before calling it a day. It did live, and since then I grab every dog I see (much to my mother's chagrin).

Also, I will never, not ever, own a greyhound.

I always look for a collar and tags if I can, and that means seeing some really awful stuff. It always makes my heart heavy. Sorry you saw the dog.

I pick up what I can, but if you have children or your dogs in the car, that's not always an option. If it is injured I go get help.

when I see a loose dog on the side of the road it makes me feel like I am seeing a toddler on the side of the road. Your insides just feel like ice.

I never did find that one that I heard hit, and I know it is long gone dead or survived and made it home or whatever but I can't get it out of my head.

I'm so sorry you saw that. That poor dog. It makes you wonder about him and if anybody is missing him, and what his life was like... Heartbreaking.

I, too, will always stop if I think a dog is loose. Always.

This also reminds me to put my big crate and water bowl back in my car, just in case.

That's a really good point. Somebody I knew on another forum had a dog go missing. A man found her body two weeks later, and cut her collar off to get the phone number. It's morbid and it sucks, but she needed the closure. He was also kind enough to help her bury the dog.

I don't bury what I find, all but one. That was just too beautiful to rot on the side of the road. If you buried them, around here, you would be doing it weekly. That was a very kind thing for this man to do.

since black dog was here I have been watching for a big crate. IT would really help if I didn't have to bring them into the house and pin up Sancho Vic and Pepper.

It so, so was. She was too far gone to be moved, and I remember the girl saying that the old man stayed with her while she cried, and everything.

Hyia went with me to check on the last one. I had to park at the station and I swear they are always further back than they looked in the first place. I didn't take her up close, but it was dusk and I wasn't leaving her in the car either. I make sure she understands if the dog is injured she is in no way to even attempt to do what I have done. My vet when I was growing up told me of a collie he stopped to help and the dog died clamped down on his arm. THe one Hy and I checked on was a lab and I couldn't tell when i passed it if it were dead or not. No collar no tags, and as far as I can tell no one looking which is just about normal for here. It makes me so mad.

Do you have a lost dog registry? We do here and you can call them and tell them.

Sadly, where I live, I see at least two dead dogs on the side of the road every single day, not to mention at least twenty strays out on the county roads

That's horrible, I can't imagine what that must feel like. I saw a dead cat on the side of the road ONCE and was horrified, I felt ill. I don't think I could live somewhere that you see that sort of thing all the time...I still get sad when I see dead squirrels.

I just wanted to add.... they may not have known the number to call and had not made it home yet to look it up or something. Heck, up until the last couple years, i wouldn't of known who to call or had the number handy. I only do now cause I'm with the rescue and have needed to call for them.

I stop sometimes. we piked up a big wet yellow lab a while ago-a good reason to have leather seats:lol-sign: By the time I knocked on the first door chaz had named the dog. He was very upset when we found he had a home and even more upset when he found out he lived outside. I had been irate because we found him wandering on a state route and a sheriff had driven right by him.

I stopped for a couple on my way to high school once and turns out they were the wolfs that got loose from the wolf breeder that used to live down the street. I got real close before I realized.

I stopped once downtown on my way home from work around midnight trying to get a boxer that had gotten hit with some other people but someone was acting like they were going to start fighting us so we all left-it was very strange,and the dog ran off. Someone did call the cops but the dog was long gone.

I see dead dogs out here maybe once a month. I never thought of calling anyone. There is no one to call. Animal control(the pound) did not even care when my dad had to shoot a dog that attacked my step sisters rabbit and then them.

I've never seen a dead dog, other than my own, Dan and Breagha when they died, I never saw Wispa or Maddy. I can't even imagine seeing a dead dog at the side of the road, that must just be awful.

I always stop and try to catch loose dogs if I can. About 10 years ago one of my dogs got out of my yard and was happily moseying around the neighhborhood while I was getting ready for work. I had no idea he was missing til I went to the back door to bring him in and he was not there. I panicked but within 5 minutes I got a call from someone that had stopped him and checked the phone number on his tag. Every dog I see wandering loose, I remember how relieved I was to get that call and think, that could be my baby. Like smkie said, it's like seeing a toddler walking down the road alone.
