i was asked if theres any difference between the panacur you get at the vets and safeguard which you can get much cheaper off the shelves at most petstores.

after looking into it i personally cannot see any difference...
but im wondering if theres something i dont know...

the active ingredient in both is:
22.2% fenbendazole

both require 3 daily doses.

this is for a tapeworm treatment, the vet wants her to spend $40 per dog to get the dosage of panacur from them to treat her dog, however from the store the safeguard is only $12.99 per dog and she has 3 to treat.

if there is any difference in these products let me know, ive been told fenbendazole works wonderfull for the removal of tape and other worms...

any ideas?
or is ther another brand you prefer?

all three dogs have Taenia tapeworm eggs and segments according to the fecal at the vets

In the places I've worked they never used fenbendazole for tapes, they've always used Drontal.

Panacur/Safeguard are basically the same and we used Panacur on all intakes at the SPCA while I used the Safeguard at home. Once a day for 5 days, then 3 weeks later-once a day for 3 days, then 3 months later (if the dogs were still there), once a day for 3 days. I know it works for most common worms and Giardia if used properly but have never heard of it being used for tapeworm. I can't remember if the dosages were the same for both Panacur and Safeguard though. The dosage chart per kg should be compared.

Strongid T used at double the regular dose will work for the common tapes but the Vets I worked for used the Drontal pills only.

Sorry I couldn't help more....:(

I use Safeguard. As far as I can find out, it is exactly the same as Panacur except for the label (and the price).

For tapeworms I use OTC praziquantel - Tape Worm Tabs. It takes care of all the types of tapeworms instead of just one like Panacur/Safeguard, and only needs one dose instead of three.

Agree with the others^^^

Safeguard and Panacur are the exact same...just different brands and packaging.

Safeguard/Panacur only takes care of one type of tapeworm, however and it's the less common tape. If you purchase OTC Tradewinds dewormer that will be the most effective treatment for tapes as it is the same active ingredient (praziquantel) as what is in Drontal/Cestex that the vets prescribe.

Use Cestex instead. It's even cheaper. One pill one day then 21 days later the other pill. Works like a charm.

Panacur and Safeguard are both exactly the same. They are the same active ingredient (Fenbendazole) and the same strength(s) and even manufactured by the same company (Intervet). The main difference (as far as I can discern) is that Panacur is available by prescription or through a Veterinarian only whereas Safeguard is widely available.
The Safeguard granules for dogs does claim to kill tapeworms but as someone mentioned before it is the less common variety. Praziquantel is great for both types of tapeworm and is available not only in the Tradewinds brand but D-worm offers a Tapeworm tab that is exactly the same in strength but much less expensive.
The newest option available and by far the best (IMHO) is called WormX Plus (by Virbac). This chewable tablet dewormer combines the Praziquantel with the Pyrantel Pamoate (active ingredient in Nemex 2, D-Worm, Evict and Strongid), so it effectively kills all of the most common types of worms.
I work for Jeffers Animal Supply and so I know you can get it from us at jefferspet.com. Not sure who else has it.
