My new landlord is flipping his **** about the "dangerous pit bulls" I have, and is requiring me to get insurance. A quick google search gets me some pretty wild results, anywhere from 10k a year in "dog bite coverage" to state farm renters insurance which covers injury to people while in my dwelling. Are they the same thing? is the high price dangerous dog insurance just a scam? Anyone else had to deal with this?

When we got our renters insurance, they asked us what kind of dogs we had. I can imagine had I said a Rottweiler and a Pit Bull it would have effected our premium.

It's not the same thing as "dangerous dog insurance", but if you don't have renters insurance currently, it may be enough to appease your landlord.

Generally dog bites are covered under the liability portion of insurance, but certain companies exclude certain breeds. I've never heard of dangerous dog insurance, unless it's something that has cropped up to fill that gap for companies that exclude breeds.

I second Farmer's, they do not have breed exclusions. Be sure to ask your agent specifically about dog bites, though, because some things vary from state to state.

Thanks everyone, Ill look into it tomorrow. theres a state farm literally across the street from my house Ill start there. For convenience, what shoudl I call my dogs? Bulldog Mix? Or Pit Bull Mix? Im pretty damned certain insurance companies are not going to have American Bully on file

State Farm has reasonable liability insurance that covers dog bites. Farmer's Insurance, I believe, no longer extends coverage to pit bulls, rottweilers, and wolf hybrids.

Each company is different in how they cover dog bites. Make sure to read the fine print, or better yet, talk to an agent and ask direct questions to make sure.

We have State Farm, and they have never asked what breeds we had, for either renters or home owners insurance. They asked how many dogs we had, if they had a bite record (they don't), if they were protection or guard trained (they are not), and that was it.

Just call them what they are. A friend went to get insurance and her company didn't have borzois on file. The agent just shrugged and figured if they hadn't heard of them then it wasn't a breed on the "high bite risk" list. Different companies may have different policies on it, but they're probably not going to deny coverage based on it being an unlisted breed.

Same here. We specifically asked our agent about this as we have and have had dogs who could clearly potentially be excluded based on their apparent breed mixes, and were specifically told that they do not exclude based on breed but on bite history.
