I'm thinking about getting my 15 year old cousin a commissioned artwork of either a painted horse, or more preferably a horse and herself for Christmas.

I think a lot of you know great artists on etsy or otherwise. Could you guys recommend me some people to check out? I'm looking for a physical painting, not digital and realistic not animated but I am open to suggestions if there's any animated artists you really love.

I don't know if she draws/paints horses, but new favorite artist hands down is Fiona (who recently joined the forum). She's lancerandrara here on Chaz, and these are links to her webpages

Her landscapes and environment paintings are to die for and I love her style. Not quite realistic but not cartoony either, particularly her paintings.

Thanks Grace! I don't even know where to look to find artists for commission... Do you have any other suggestions I can look at?

I will email Fiona and see if she can do portraits/horses. Her landscapes really look phenomenal!

Hmm, well there's a site called deviantART that actually is a pretty good resource for digital art (with a lot of artists underpricing themselves), but I honestly don't know where to look for traditional paintings. I'll ask my sister and maybe Fiona will chime in with suggestions!

Aw man, thanks Grace for thinking of my work again! I always appreciate your support. :p

Most animals are my forte- in particular wolves/dogs, horses, cats/wild cats, birds... and mythical creatures. (I'm horrible at drawing humans though. I would not recommend myself for any human-related paintings at all.)

Depending on your budget, I also think DeviantArt is the way to go to find artists open to commissions. If you're aiming for physical traditional paintings, you can search the specific category "Traditional > Paintings > Animals" and choose the option "sort by: popularity within the past week/month" to best look for active ones, I think.

There are some.. ur.. questionable artists on DeviantArt, but there are also quite a few professionals if you look in the right places. :D

Thanks guys!

I hope I have enough time to get this project going this year! If not, maybe next year. I will check out all the resources you guys pointed me to.

I looked at the deviantart website briefly but could not figure out how to find people that accept commissions. Could you guide me through it?

I was able to find traditional paintings but that appears to be artwork people have already done and are showing them online...I'm really not very good at this lol.

Two of my best friends - let me know I (Alex) recommended them

http://melissadoskotz.blogspot.com
http://deangelisart.tumblr.com

James's stuff on his blog is mostly surrealist and abstract, but if you ask he'll definitely send you some pics of more realistic animal stuff. Melissa might have some stuff in a style you like right on her blog.
Thank you very much. These artists' styles are not exactly what I'm looking for but I will keep them in mind for future commissions!

I would message them! The stuff on their sites is mainly their own personal projects but they both (especially Melissa) do a lot of more realistic portrait style commissions! They will send you samples if you ask.
