I've been really working on a few behaviors with Gabby lately and was super duper excited when I got a chain of them last night!

We have been working SO hard on an offered fold back down (very specifically elbows first). She could do it with a lure but if I tried to shape or capture she would just butt first plop. Last night I got MULTIPLE in a row.

We've been doing a lot of sit/stand/down transitions, not specifically in that order, to build the behaviors. So yeah, now I need to find my flip so I can get video of it!

Anything exciting happening in anyone else's training world?

I've been working hard with Copper, mostly recall, tracking, and a few muscle-building tricks. She's so adorable and enthusiastic.

Bloo's been on break after being sick, but she's got "spin" down really solidly and is starting to get sit pretty!

Zip Tie has had 100% successful overs, catching a thrown disc over a jump, for the past two days. We've been battling this exercise for the past year and just recently had a break through. Little successes.

Zinga is learning to get reconnected with me. Eye contact is important for successful anything, so we are regaining that. I also figured out the timing issue with a difficult sequence that we have been working on. Good to get that fixed!

Renegade swam in the pool for the first time yesterday! She was terrified of it ever since we moved down here. Took her to the creek on Sunday where she learned that swimming was fun, then with a little convincing, she was retrieving her toy out of the pool. Yay!!

Taboo has had nothing but break throughs, obviously since I just got her. The big ones are she has a flip now, she's catching discs over a jump, diving into the pool and connecting during disc sessions.

Zuma had a killer break through this weekend at our big Qualifier. She normally gets extremely amped up during comps, but she did AMAZING with a nearly dropless round on Saturday. That's hard for her.

No recent break throughs with Miss Mighty, it's been just too hot to work her without risking her drive.

Elsie's getting that the drop on recall doesn't mean she'll never ever get back to me ever. :rofl1: Her recall is awesome, so convincing her to lay down partway back has been hard. Breaking it down into small bites helped, but switching to a ball as the reward fixed it.

I need someone to teach my dogs obed for me... I just can't. It's too tedious. We're working on agility handling signals with more speed/turns.

That's great news everyone!

I so much want to compete with Gabby but it has taken me a long time to figure out how she ticks. And we're still learning, but we're getting there!

Xpeanx, I'll do obedience for days!

I have a weekly online training group that's really helpful when I need training advice for a specific problem or just to talk about training in general. It's really, really helped me work on specifics with Gabby. I'd given up on ever getting a fold back down from her, but then we talked about it, and TADA!

I haven't been doing much actual training lately, but tonight I took Squash for a leash walk and realized that somehow he has actually become quite pleasant to leash walk. We had to penalty yards over a few squirrels but for the most part it was... nice.

Bubbles FINALLY really understands "stay" LOL. She could do sit/down/stand but was convinced that if I moved she had to move also. I can now even do out of sight stays with her in the house and yard. So proud <3

Now she just has to get over yelling at dogs sometimes on leash and we can go for her CGC.

Jari is not very dog reactive on walks any more, which is SO NICE, and Kimma's recall is amazing.

It's the little things for sure!

I remember having that realization a couple of years ago with Kimma. It was like all of a sudden she was so fun to walk. I'm hoping Jari will be like that one day hahaha.

I had to laugh at agility the other day, when I accidentally dropped some treats on the floor and Cajun started to go for them and then stopped and looked at me. Obviously she felt like this was some sort of "leave it" trap. Although I didn't cue anything, I loved that she took the time to actually THINK!

One of our biggest things, which isn't much of anything, is that she's slowly starting to understand the concept of offering behaviors. I've been so spoiled with Juno, working with Cajun sometimes gets annoying because she never just... repeats something or tries anything. She just stares at me and waits for me to help lol. But she's getting there.

But yeah at the moment she's the only one who gets any training time.

Well, this dog I'm watching has been learning "crawl", and is catching on very quickly!! It's so cute- she will be silly for a few moments, but then she starts to focus and does really well.

As for Roxie... not a whole lot going on right now, but we are getting better and better with the whole separation thing. She is able to stay in her crate for breakfast for a LOT longer than she used to be (she used to just finish breakfast and then start whining and digging).

On the downside, I tried leaving her in her ex-pen while I took a shower this morning, but she started barking. When I got downstairs, she was shaking like a leaf :(

I'm mostly just working on Roxie's separation issues right now, not a whole lot of other training going on. She does know her yard limits now (although I will always keep her on a long line), so that's something, too!!

Congrats on all of your successes, guys!

I don't think I've been working on anything conscientiously. Cohen & I did qualify for Nationals last weekend in agility, which I've blahblahed about in the agility thread. I wasn't expecting to qualify and was totally taken by surprise when they called Cohen & my names.

I recently did a demo with both dogs and was very pleased with how Megatron's basic agility was coming along. Despite crowds and a new environment she's driving ahead of me to hit jumps & tunnels. I only ever practice with her at shows so I don't tend to expect much progress, but she's clearly improving.

I took Fiona and Zoie lure coursing two weekends ago and I was pleasantly pleased with their behavior. Zoie can be reactive with other dogs (well, just sort of stress barking). There was not one bark heard. Fiona was great. They went out, they did their runs (pretty well, too!) and came back to hand with no problems. This was on expansive farming property, with a smattering of dogs all around, and they did so great. It's so nice to have dogs that can go and do things like this and HAVE FUN. I'm appreciative of my dogs everyday.

Fiona is coming along in her obedience. We're hitting the point where she actually has a consistent heel, I love this point of starting to be able to fine tune different things.

It's super fun to read through what everyone is working on, good thread idea.

I feel like Onyx has had some nice breakthrough moments on lots of things lately.

Agility has been a big focus, we have had 9 classes total now and things are coming along nicely. She is nailing 12 weaves, and we're incorporating front crosses into our courses pretty successfully, contacts are ok, still need some work but definitely coming along.

Still working a lot on heeling and general obedience stuff, picking away at it, things are going pretty well. We just tried a stand out of motion from heel recently, I was super happy that she got it first try.

Here's a little video of that day, heeling and some other things including some weaves.

http://vimeo.com/98810511 (its on vimeo and I can't figure out how to embed it, is it possible?)

Also she has had some issues with dog reactivity, mostly due to the fact that all dogs around here are offleash and out of control and so she was constantly being rushed by strange dogs and really didn't like it. She still doesn't like being rushed, but she is now completely fine with being around/walking past/working near strange dogs, and even greeting them if it's done politely, which is super nice to see.

Nicely done. I can't believe how quickly you guys have progressed in agility. It reminds me a bit of a client we had in our agility classes once. It was a middle aged woman and a Terv. She had gone through our basic & advanced obedience with another instructor. This other instructor warned me about them, basically saying that the Terv wouldn't work for food or toys and that the dog was a bump on a log. We got this dog into our agility classes and she just came alive. She excelled quickly and she worked just for the joy of agility and some praise. She was a delight to have in our classes and I wish I could have stolen her.

The reactivity comments reminded me, I almost feel like I can't call Cohen reactive any more. I subscribe to the idea that "a reactive dog will always be reactive, even if the reactivity is invisible". But... Cohen's reactivity is so damned invisible these days. We were at last weekend's trial which was filled with strange, intense dogs of all types of breeds and she didn't even look at them. She was so good.

She still has her triggers like Great Danes and OESes, but even those are insanely mild that only I can see. She works closely with my friend's OES at our demos. It's pretty neat.

So what is the purpose behind the catching a disc over a jump exercise? I've never heard of that.

We use it for training "big overs", where the dog catches a disc while jumping over the handlers body. The Japanese freestyle teams are famous for their huge overs and we are copying the way they train it. It is a great way to isolate criteria, I can teach a dog to jump early, collect prior to take off, pop in a nice arch, run out of their landing and so much more.
