My vet told me rawhides are digestable. I read somewhere on this forum that rawhides are NOT digestable. Who's right?

I have been told that they are not digestible, all I can say is a vet is not a nutritionist, there was a topic like this on another forum, some feed them some dont, i dont but if they were safe I would feed them, but untill I know for sure I will not feed them

a lot depends on what type, how big, where made, etc.

personally, i only feed two things - all natural, bully sticks or pig ears.

I used to be completely anti-rawhide, but now that I've looked at how my dogs eat them, I consider large, all-natural, american-made rawhide bones to be safe for them. I just buy the big jumbo bones, they gnaw on them but don't bite off big pieces.

Kim - random question about the bully sticks.. Are they digestible if the dog bites off a decent-sized chunk? Dakota will actually eat them. Never had a problem so far but I'm still concerned.

Pigs ears tend to be put in the same category as raw hide

i agree RD - mine are american, all natural pig ears and bully sticks :)

i doubt they are wholly digestible in the short term if chunks are eaten - but im not sure how much is actually "eaten" of a bully stick -maybe its just that bowie CHOOSES to chew bully sticks, but he hasnt had a problem (and i cant give him recreational bones because he will kill them - hes broken a whole pig femur!!!). im less concerned about problems though if he does get a piece, because it cant be any bigger than whole bones he does swallow :)

Well i doubt they would make rawhides for dogs if they were dangerous for them. I say (my opinion) if he likes them, let him have him. I havent heard of a dog dieing or getting sick of a rawhide yet. And these have worldwide popularity..

i dont consider them the same type, but i never said they werent rawhide -- they are a LOT different than the twisted bones, etc and a whole lot safer. i dont feed those bones at all. the only time mya got pig ears were as super special treats, and they were completely eaten - and they are much too small to even be a concern that she chews off a chunk and gets an obstruction.

sadly it's not that simple. if the pet industry couldn't make things that aren't good for pets, we wouldn't have shelves full of crappy foods and treats in all kinds of different places.

in a nutshell - rawhides are made from hide - the skin of an animal, generally cattle. just like many other parts (hair, horns, claws, beaks etc.) it's made up mostly of protein. unlike the protein in muscle and organ meats, this type is much less digestible tho.

depending on the size of chunks the dog swallows, they may or may not dissolve in the intestinal tract, which is (at least i think so) what is of importance.

regular, uncompressed rawhide isn't something i'd give to a dog, the compressed (heat treated) kind is much safer, since it doesn't let the dog bite or break off large chunks, not even when it is thoroughly wet and soaked.

I probably shouldn't ask this question but I am SO curious now. What is the meaning of the word fag in England? I am assuming it is cigarettes but it's just strange to hear you say selling fags and alcohol when that word means something different here. Don't wanna make anyone angry, just being curious.

I think knotted rawhide is the one that has these knot things at the ends and cormpressed look like those cartoon bones or different shapes. Nylabone is compressed rawhide....right?

So mordy how do you tell the difference between normal rawhide and the heat treated kind?
I know my dogs HATE the compressed rawhide. I got them a HUGE compressed rawhide bone for like eight bucks and they never touched it. They like the regular rawhides but I only give those every so often (like once a month). I always take them away when they start to chew chunks off too. Hannah got extremely sick from compressed rawhide sticks too, they were made in some other country though.

They will usually say on the package what it is. The regular not good rawhide is the one with the knots at the end and compressed is shaped like a bone and usually is in a package that will say compressed rawhide on it.

If you are looking at the chew sticks they look like compressed to me but I couldn't really see close up. Those do look like the things that got Hannah sick but Hannah has a very weak stomach and gets sick on a lot of things.
