Ugh.
I'm kinda getting sick of the way my visiting relatives (mainly my uncle) are with Nicho. That uncle really thinks he knows all about dogs and being the 'leader of the pack'. He loves his Cesar Milan and it's just getting rediculous.
I don't like Cesar, but that's beside the point. I am just getting tired of hearing "SSST!" and stuff.

Nicho was in a home where he was abused by a man. Not by the person that gave him to us, but before that. He isn't that fearful anymore but he isn't totally comfortable with guys.
I personally HATE that my uncle pulls Nicho by the collar and FORCES him to sit next to him, holding him by the collar. Nicho tries to lay down *SSST*. It took Nicho a while to warm up to my Uncle That Lives With Us. It took taking it slow, handing him a treat and being calm. We couldn't do it in one night.

I'm also tired of hearing how you can't let the dogs out before you! Cuz, of course they will think they are the boss of you.

Again, I'm not ranting about Cesar, I'm ranting about the fact that I don't agree with 'training methods' being used on MY dog.

Remind your uncle that he is not the alpha in the house, YOU are.

As for exiting the door first, I think this is a good idea when training your dog to the door. Once he has learned to sit and wait, you no longer have to step through the doorway first (or at all). Dog should sit out of the way of the door swing and wait for you to tell him "out". This keeps him from knocking you down, charging strangers, etc.

its hard when family is like that. I went through the same thing and in the end the only way to fix it was to keep kenya with me at all times when he was around. I even had her tied to my belt loop because I was so sick of the man that was staying with us giving her the cesar crap and feeding her people food

:/

Nice point. ;)

I had a friend sort of like that, and I also just kept my dog with me at all times. I would certainly NOT let someone jerk her around, much less verbally repremand her... but then again I wouldn't give my dog the chance to annoy that person either.

Remember that first and formost, you are your dog's protector. Above all else, your job is to keep the dog safe, both physically AND psychologically. If something is happening that she is uncomfortable with, it's your RESPONSIBILITY to make that stop, and it doesn't really matter how you do it. You MUST be brave enough to stand up to your uncle and make sure that he doesn't do this again, you owe that to your dog.

Good luck!

I feel for you, knowing your age and that the adults are probably dismissing your opinions and wishes. Hopefully you can keep Nicho away from him.

You can also teach Nicho that the tsst stuff = go wild and play just by pairing it with games and fun stuff. It's what I did with my girls to prevent them from having negative associations with one of the people I knew who did the cesar thing to them without my permission and it worked like a charm (plus it really confused the cesar nut lol).

Ha! Ha! Ha! Turn the Ceaser sound into a good dog cue. Great idea. How about the dog turns completely in a circle when he hears the sound?

You know, I had to laugh when I read this last line... not laughing at you, but, I was dating a guy one time, that believed HE needed to train MY dog since he was over here a couple nights a week. I got so darn sick of him "trying" to give commands to my dog, that everytime he did, I would immediately say "Bad boy, Shame, Shut UP!"

He learned pretty quickly... lol

The girl only tried it once I think and then never got another chance with the dogs, so I don't know that she ever figured it out really. The conditioning is there so if it ever happens again the dogs are ready.

Since that interaction, I've actually taught Z a "grr" pose that uses a similar hand pose as the "claw" thing Cesar uses so the results of that would be hilarious: person tries to do the neck bite thing and the dog rears up on back legs and growls/grumbles. I can see it now: "Your dog is VERY dangerously dominant", "ummm no she's just doing her bear impression". :p
