Anyone here compete in Rally with their dogs?? I first heard of Rally-O in 2004. After reading Charles Kramer's book, I knew this was something I had to learn more about and do with my next dog (currently dogless)! I attended a 2-day AKC Rally workshop with a friend earlier this year, and added Intro To Rally-O to my class schedule this Fall. I can't wait til I get my new puppy in 2007 & he's old enough to start Rally-O training;)

I am only familiar enough with Rally-O to know that I want to do it with my bulldog, yes my bulldog LOL! I really want to do compet. obedience or rally with her. She's only 6 months and I will start basic training with her next month with hopes to continue on into Rally-O.

What type of puppy are you getting?

*raises hand* I do!

I haven't competed much (college kinda takes a toll on finances and time!) but Bailey has her RN and one RA leg while Buzz has 2 RN legs (with TWO perfect scores!). Buzz is entered in January hoping to get that last leg!

It's a lot of fun, and we'll be doing APDT Rally-O in January too! That sounds like even more of a blast!

My Belgian, Riot has his CARO Rally Novice title already and will be competing in CKC Rally for his CKC Novice title as well early next year as the CKC is JUST NOT introducing RallyO lol

I love it - its a great mix of agility and obedience!

Oh, what gorgeous Springers!! Especially love Buzz with all his ticking:) Here's a photo of the Springers I grew-up with....

Until Silken Windhounds are AKC eligible in 2010 I'll need to do APDT Rally. California just began having APDT trials this year.

I love yours too! (Show person in me coming out... I LOVE the liver one's feet... haha!)

I agree, I LOVE ticking! Buzz is from a BYB but he has a lot of English in him. Bailey is a direct field/show cross... I love 'em both and WHEN I get another, I still don't know what kind I want!

For anyone who has done rally..
Do you seriously find it fun? Honestly? Our agility class is changing nights in January and we can't attend it till spring, and we'd like to do something.. I like having a class each week. But I don't know people who do rally.. and I never loved Ob.. though I thought about going back and taking another level..

Hints, tips advice?

I find anything I do with my dog fun *shrug* it's all about the way you approach the training.

My dogs and I both love Obedience and Rally, but if I made it boring and monotonous, you'd better bet they wouldn't like it!

APDT Rally-O seems more laid back and focused on fun than AKC Rally... but just my observation, and I haven't even competed in APDT myself yet! haha

Well, I can make Ob in my kitchen fun :) But the Ob classes we have had were well not so fun.. So I suppose it's partially who is teaching the class in any sport.

I've been thinking about doing Rally with my pup- he can't jump much until he's older (Corgi knees, vet's orders) and I think doing Rally for a while would be invaluable for his future agility training. Anyone have any good links to organizations or email lists to find out how to get started?

We do APDT rally and love it. The pics in my siggy are both from a rally trial. Sammy has one leg of his level 3 and Rosie still needs one leg of level 2. Both dogs have awards of excellence for the L1 & 2 titles they have.

We are going to hopefully do CARO rally too since they have versatility rally with neat stuff like healing on the right, more agility obstacles etc

For whoever asked if it's really fun. The dogs like it because it's very motivating, you can talk to them all around the course (but you can't double command in apdt rally), the fact that it's a course is more fun than regular OB. In APDT rally you can pat or treat your dog at any stationary signs that end in a halt once you've completed the exercise. By L2 & 3 there aren't very many stationary signs so people don't tend to use treats. When we do regular OB my dogs get very concerned why I'm not talking to them or praising them. They care much more about that then treats.
I don't find reg OB much fun and seeing some people at trials still using outdated methods, punishing the crap out of their dogs and being really uptight drives me nuts. There's none of that in APDT rally because you'd get tossed out on your rear by the trial rep. I haven't seen shut down, unhappy dogs at a rally trial-- very different from OB. I'd still like to get the dogs CDX's, maybe even a UD for Sammy. I think training would be fun but the trial environment and trials themselves - not so much.
I find rally to be a really good foundation for agility too.

I compete in AKC Rally with Arthur. So far, we have trialed twice, and Q'd both times. The second day, we got 2nd Place! Windy will be competing at the next trial as well as Arthur. I have a great teacher through my obedience club and start my Rally Advanced classes in January. I find it very fun, both training and competing!

there was a lady with two bulldogs at one of the matches i took luce to. they were a hoot.

i've not had the guts to actually trial with luce, but we'll get there eventually. i've only taken her to matches, and she's such a freaking lunatic, i'd rather waste $3/run and be able to train in the ring than stress over a trial.

but i think rally is a lot of fun, and a great sport for people who are just beginning or who have flighty, spastic dogs like mine  because novice is all done on-leash.

pashaw! I've seen video of your heelwork. You guys would do great in rally!

I've seen dachsunds (?sp), viszlas, pointers, a brussles griffon, greyhounds, welshies, airedales, jack russels and shiba inus. Actually we had a husky absolutely cleaning up in calgary in both OB and in rally- it was amazing. I LOVE seeing nontypical obedience breeds doing so well. I think modern training methods have made it so much easier for such a huge variety of breeds to be successful in obedience. It's awesome :D

Rally is a lot of fun! =] I went through the classes with Gonzo, and he won both of his fun matches, but I basically had to choose Flyball or Rally-O and I chose Flyball. I really want to get back into Rally, especially with Fozzie.

Well, we just signed up for a January Novice Rally class. Wish us luck, I'm a little scared, lol.
Don't be scared! The whole point of rally is to make obedience FUN and positive for both dogs and owners.
If you're a keener and want to do something ahead of time to make rally class easy, work hard on heeling and attention. Level 1/ Novice rally is just a course of heelwork with some sits, downs, pivots and serpentines/fig 8 thrown in.
If you'll be doing APDT rally you can print off the signs and little explanations off the apdt web site. A big part of L1 for me was just getting familiar with the signs so I knew them instead of having to stand there and read them and go "oh yeah" and then do the exercise :D
