Racial slurs

And this might be off-topic, but people.....there are quite a few people out there with dogs named "N*gger." In fact, a very famous APBT had that name and many out there copy it much as they do "Dibo" and "Chinaman" and whatever else.

I've had to go out into the waiting room many a times and call someone by their first name vs. the dog's name all because the dog's name was "N*gger." However, I've never seen a white person with a dog named that. Is there a double-standard?

Hmmm... can't see the desire to name my dog anything racial...

Although I guess having a dog named Honkey could be kinda funny... but it's a much less controversial word I suppose.

Personally I don't think Chaz is 'smarter' because a few people read a name backwards. I think it just shows how much this forum likes drama.

Reggin is a good person. She has a good heart. Loves her dogs. Loves her family. She's been kind to members. The dog's name is unfortunate but she has said that she is not racist. Other than the name there has never been any hint of racism from her on this forum. And yet people can't let it go. It's just a name. However it came about it's the name her dog knows. It's the name that we know her by and I don't see that changing. So maybe we can all move on.

Reggin in a thread a few months ago pointed out that her dog's name was obscene spelled backwards. None of the chaz members came up with it.

But either way though... so what? Saje makes a good point about her generally acting like a good person...

She hasn't cried about anything in this particular thread and it's in this particular thread she's been criticized for it...

So whats the point in harping at her over how you can flip a name around and it spells something bad... I remember when that was an awesome thing to do when I was in grade 3... right up there with spelling boobs and hell on the calculator...

I have absolutely NO desire to either. But what I'm saying is that it is quite a common name among APBT owners, and the majority of those who chose to name their dog that are African American owners. Same goes for the name Nigerino, which has no racial intention, but just sounds "bad." when you say it aloud.

I DO have a dog named Tar Baby, but it is in NO way a racial thing. But then again, I didn't grow up thinking that the book about Briar Rabbit was a racist piece of literature so I don't think that naming a white dog Tar Baby is racist in nature by any means. Nor is there any hidden meaning behind our black Lab's name being Snowflake.

I've been called a lot of names myself. I was once punched in the arm for not allowing someone to cross the walkway before me as I supposedly should have (according to what she told the principal and guidance counselor).

I have friends of all races and ethnicities and color. So it's true that I don't read into things nor do I revolve my life around race and it's "unfairness". I prefer to treat people as people, it's how I was raised, and it's how my children will be raised.

Wait when did Briar Rabbit become a racist book?

Hmm few months ago I read an article saying how racism was a thing of the past but ageism was still around and very accepted (article was complaining about how elderly are discriminated against). Guess racism isn't quite so past us as some like to think.

Nigerino just sounds like Ned Flanders being racist.

I thought this thread was about how we feel about racial slurs . . .somehow, it is has become a long and silly discussion on Reggin's dog's name. I am aware of what it spells backwards. I was not part of the original discussion, so I don't know how it came up. I have no idea, nor do I care, why her fiance named Reggin that . . .whether it was an accident or a racist joke or some post-modern commentary on racial issues. Frankly, I would never have noticed had it not come up, because it looks like a real name, and I'm not in the habit of spelling things backwards, except in my occasional dyslexic moments.

Reggin has not acted in a racist fashion. She had not made racist remarks. It's her dog's name. Perhaps that name is in poor taste. Perhaps its a bit strange, considering that the animal in question is neither black, nor all white, which makes any joke involving the n-word sort of dead in the water. I really don't know. I don't care much either. I think we're reading an awful lot into a pet's name spelled backwards, and a possibly tasteless joke.

Vouch, well said ^^

I've only read this last page and dont care to go back and read, because I am not one for drama. I explained myself and I will leave it as just that. Take it how you want.

I just want to say thanks to those of you who have stuck up for me about this matter. Its obvious that this was all started just for the sake of drama, which is quite unfortunate, because I think a lot of us are getting tired of it. The intentions of a few members here are also obvious.

This is my last 2 cents on this subject. :)

I DO have a dog named Tar Baby, but it is in NO way a racial thing.

The term has been used to describe "an inextricable problem or situation," and I could understand you naming your dog because of that, but your explanation of the name seems linked to the dog's coloring. . . and in the past it was used as a racial slur for both African Americans and Maoris. If your naming of your dog has absolutely nothing to do with anything racial - although it has been used as a racial slur before - why did you mention the dog's coloring as though it was relevant to the discussion, and what is the reason for naming the dog that?

I am reminded, at this point, of the man who was walking his Scottish Deerhound down the street when a lady came up to him and asked what kind of dog it was. "A Scottish Deerhound," he said. She asked him what the dog's name was "Rebel" he said. She then launched into a tirade about how it was racist of him to name his dog Rebel, because that's a term for Southerners, who rebelled against the Union in support of slavery. When she was done, he said "Madam, this is a Scottish Deerhound. I had in mind William Wallace, not Robert E. Lee."

Beware what you read into things, you just might make a fool of yourself.

I always thought growing up that Sambo would be a cute name for a cute black dog ......then they banned " Little Black Sambo " . I really don't see it as a racial story !! Loved it as a child !!

There's a lovely black orchid called "Little Black Sambo." Alas, its popularity has declined.

Wow.... been away all day, and came home to read all this! As to the OP I do not think calling someone dumb is anywhere on the same level as calling someone a "N" word, utterly ridiculous to even insinuate that it is!!!

As far as Reggin's dog/user name.... really has Reggin EVER even hinted at something racist on here??? When this was brought up originally in another thread it was, in my opinion a personal slam and you know what, it worked because now everyone is using this thread to jump on her again. You want to know what I find offensive? People using this as a way to question her character when it seems the real beef was Reggin's stand on other topics....

I truly enjoy this forum but hope I never tick any of you off badly, seriously!!

:rofl1::rofl1: OMG..........I am dieing here! *wipes tears*

I agree with whoever said that it just doesn't mean anything to them to be called Cracker, Whitey, Honkey.......etc.

I find it humorous if/when my friends say that to me jokingly, and I think I would bust a gut laughing if anyone else called me that NOT joking.

On the other hand, I have never been in a situation where it was degrading to me. As a woman, I don't care a whole heck of a lot to be called the *C* word.............so perhaps the *N* word is like that to a person of color. But even the *C* word wouldn't get me all POd.......I just don't care much for the sound of it, LOL

*shrugs* IDK but I think Renee really nailed it on the first page when she said it reflects on the intelligence person using it.
