So, we've fed orijen, merrick GF, and are currently working through a bag of blue that was on sale. My school offers a feeding program, where I could obtain Purina products at a seriously discounted rate... I'm feeding 4 large dogs so I'm wondering if anyone has experience with the Proplan or Beyond formulas? Seriously don't want to do any damage to my dogs so if I have to I'll just stick with what they're on... butttt if it won't do any long-term damage..?

It looks like the Beyond is better than the ProPlan? I'm basing this on the amount of corn I'm seeing in the ProPlan formula (I'd likely be feeding sport?)

Thanks in advance!

(Hills is also an option, but I have no desire to feed Hills. Ever.)

I switched Abrams and Cynder to Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach and love it. Abrams is doing fantastic on it (actual solid, small poops with no awful gas) and Cynder is doing great on it as well.

Honestly, every person I've ever known who fed Pro Plan raved about it. If you don't have any dogs with corn allergies...I honestly don't think it's a bad food. *zips up flame suit*

I may be switching back to 4 Health Salmon and Potato now that Abrams is done growing and doesn't need a puppy/ALS food purely for convenience, but if his poops get worse and his gas comes back, I'm sticking with the Proplan.

A lot of out clients feed it, and their dogs are still alive. When I tried it, it tore up Quids skin to the point where he was making himself bleed and it took months to sort him out, but he's sensitive all over.

Seconded. Most people I know who feed it are super happy with it.

And honestly, for the time you're in school... feed whatever they give you free. When I was in school it was Iams and Science Diet and the dogs I had at the time were just as fine eating it as I was eating ramen and mac&cheese for a few years.

When I got hired at purina, I switched all my dogs to the Pro Plan Sport 30/20 blend. Figured I would try it and switch dogs as needed if it didn't work for them. I was feeding raw before and truthfully do not notice any difference in my dogs. They all still have gorgeous costs, tons of muscle and are holding condition perfectly. I also had two dogs that were in poor condition, their coats were thin, full of dandruff and poor physical shape. They have both thrived on pro plan. I am 100% sold that this food works for my six dogs and will keep feeding it.

I like Proplan better than Beyond. I fed Gatsby Beyond a couple times and it was just a disaster.

We have a couple kennels that buy 10+ bags of Proplan Sport at a time. And it's one of the brands I like to switch people to if we don't have their old food. Honestly a LOT of dogs eat it and do very very well.

Honestly.... I LOVE Pro Plan. LOVE it. It's my go-to kibble and I always keep a few bags in the house. My favorite is the Sport 30/20. The plain ol' "regular" formulas also work great here. The canned Sensitive Skin and Stomach is fantastic as well.

There's got to be a reason why SO many show and performance dogs thrive on Pro Plan.

I've used ProPlan with no problems. I liked it.
Also, I do love the consistency of Science Diet canned...like the ground mature beef, or chicken. Dogs that get diarrhea on normal canned, are ok with the Science Diet.

It's probably because I worked at vet clinics and a veterinary teaching hospital, but I LOVE the smell of Science Diet canned.

Ive used Beyond and regular pro plan off and on and had good results. Or at least the same results. One thing I notice is the dogs really see to like it compared to some brands. They eat it well. Not tried the sport but will probably pick that up for the next bag after everyone is talking about it.

Science diet ID is my go to when we have any kind of tummy issues.

Haha yup. And there's something soothing about using a fork to crumble the food out of the can.

Yeah! And the ground beef/chicken is a similar consistency too. Love it. We used to use ID in a boarding kennel when dogs didn't eat well or had diarrhea.

For those of you who feed/have fed ProPlan...do you find yourself feeding the same amount of ProPlan as compared to other brands? More? Less?

When I first got Missy, she was eating ProPlan (the rescue often receives large donations of it). I bought a bag initially, and figured I'd keep her on it through the end of the bag, and then switch her to something I was able to get from work. She required a ridiculous amount of the ProPlan to maintain weight - like 4-5 cups a day, rather than the 3 cups a day she ate when I switched her to Fromm. She was doing well otherwise - decent coat, good stools, etc.

I've heard a ton of sport dog and conformation people absolutely rave about ProPlan, so I was just wondering if anyone else had noticed this, or if it was just my weird dog being weird?

I worked at a pet store so Merlin's diet basically consisted of "Whichever bag comes in ripped or damaged or expires"
:rofl1: I'm a great mother.

That said, I've fed Proplan sensitive skin & stomach, and sport with zero issues. Not going to say he looked BETTER but certainly the same as his regular grain free kibble.

In times of stress, where I feel like every other kibble company has got some recall or another, I always pick up a bag of purina lol

Merlin does GREAT on raw, VERY GOOD on pre-made raw
everything else from purina-acana is just kibble for him really

Yup.
Merlin looks the same while on Proplan and likes it just fine...
but I was feeding about a cup more than with grain free stuff to keep weight on him.

I can't really say. About the same? Abrams has always eaten 4 cups of food, no matter what I feed.

Before Cynder's megaE, I was attempting to increase her daily dry food to 1 1/2 or 1 2/3 cups because I felt she was too thin. She's maintaining now, at a good weight, on just over 1 cup of Pro Plan.

One of the reasons I'm worried about switching off of Pro Plan, if I choose to, is that I may have to start feeding Abrams and/or Cynder more.

ETA: Over the years, my family dogs have eaten a variety of brands. Honestly, I never remember having to drastically change food amounts for anything. No, I wasn't feeding 550+kcal/cup kibble, but when everyone said, "Feed "higher quality", they'll eat less!" I was always like, "Um...they're eating the same." Lol

Also: for those of you who have rotated kibble flavors of Pro Plan...which did you like best? I'm also considering switching to another "flavor", but am unsure which one. Thinking either the Lamb/Rice, or one of the Sport lines? Major difference between the various Protien/Fat ratios of the Sport line for "normal" dogs?

For a while, Pro Plan Sensitive Skin was the only thing Cobain could eat without getting sick.
Cobain and Rigby aren't currently on it, but they will be once we move back to my parents as that's what the other 2 eat.

Pro Plan is what all of my dogs growing up were raised on as well.

Never really had any issues with it.

I've fed both the sport and sensitive skin/stomach and really liked them both. Never had any issues, however I can get Fromm for a comparable price so i just do that now.

How much does it cost you folks?
It's expensive here, like I can get a bag of natures instinct for the same price and canidea pure for a couple bucks less.

I think at Petsmart or TSC here it is like.... $39.99 for a 35lb bag of the "regular" formulas. The Sport jumps up to over $45 for a 37.5lb bag. The Sensitive Skin/Stomach is $48.00 for a 33lb bag.

But, Chewy.com has the SSS formula for $41.76 a bag, no tax. The other formulas are comparable to store prices here as well, some being more expensive, others less.

Basically, when I priced crunched last night, most formulas were around $1.26/lb.

Dog food is so much more expensive in Ontario :(

I think for a 30lbs bag it's around $60 for us.
The "great" brands are closer to $100
