I think it's the same difficulty as with making any kind of weaves- the base usually needs to be welded.
2X2's are just two poles set 20" apart and you make two sets, to progress properly with that method you should eventually add a set of three on the end to make an odd number so you avoid the "10th pole pop out" problem and to teach the dog to keep weaving as long as they see poles ahead of them.
If you live somewhere that the ground won't freeze for a while you can just use poles that you can stick into the ground. It's a bit more owrk when you want to move them but it works fine. You can use the stakes for electric fence and then slide a peice of PVC over or use rebar and put PVC over.

If you want a good set you should be able to fnd someone in your area to make you the base and you just buy the PVC, tape it and you're done.

I think the problem would be that welded bases are often about 70 bucks each, and then you need to purchase pvc to cut to length, therefore it's anything but cheap..

You might be able to build something out of pvc to create 2 poles correctly spaced with a free standing base, but depending upon where you are, pvc isn't all that cheap either..

We are teaching 2x2s with plungers wrapped in electrical tape so they are easily seen, but I have a small dog. When the poles are finally in line, it will no longer be helpful, but for now it's getting us further than our class is by practicing at home.

Ohh, I never thoguht of that, we have Mini Aussies, so plungers would probably work, Morrie is about 18 inches, and Zoey 13-14.... So i will see, and anyways, I think I may be Getting some for x-mas :D
