I feel bad for ya'll. I was somehow born without that innate sense of fear of bugs, spiders, snakes... etc. I'm feeling really lucky right now. We let spiders live in our house, especially wolf spiders, because they eat other creepy crawly things.

Then again, we're also the family that has a gecko living in one of our rooms, who has found a way outside to hunt. It wasn't even our gecko that got loose, it just somehow lives here. It's big too, not like a house gecko, it has to be like 8 inches or so if that's possible.

Okay....being me, I just had to go look up why we might be disgusted or fearful of spiders. This is very interesting, if anyone wants to skim through it. Here's the conclusion, but the rest of the thing is pretty darn interesting. (at least it is to me. lol)
(It probably isn't an instinct, according to this.)

For what it's worth, I don't blame you for being majorly creeped out by that gigantic spider.
My housekeeper and I will respectfully disagree. LOL. We are African and both horrified by spiders.

It could be you're right PD. It must be hard to know though, if it is a learned fear or if you were born to have that fear. Was your family also creeped out by or afraid of spiders when you were little? If you observed them recoiling in fear, that could be how you became the same way. On the other hand, it could be that the science in this article is wrong and there might be some instinctive fear. I think, but am not positive, that animals are naturally wary of things like snakes, right? Or is it simply that they weren't "socialized" to them at an early enough age? What if they hung out with harmless snakes during their imprinting stage? So, it interests me, once I start reading about something and get some idea or question in my head. LOL.

Yes. My family is scared of spiders so its definitely learned. My housekeeper and 99% of black Africans are petrified by spiders, snakes and creepy crawlies.

With regards to imprinting, Lilly and Travis are wary of my snake, not scared but respectful. Riley rushes up to him and licks him. She has zero fear of him because they grew up together.

Yep. Just found another one in the kitchen. Pretty sure I'm under attack, too.

This one was FAST, but pretty bold. Ran right across the kitchen counter. Looked like a Wolf or Hobo spider, but had the coloring of a Black Widow? Weird. But it's dead now.

I'm too scared to go back down and get my coffee, though.

Oh god. There was two huge ones in the basement one night. Brown and reddish colored and hairy as crap. They were as big as the bottom of a coke can. I squished them. I don't care about them eating bugs and the like. They can live outside. Anything in the house gets smushed.

There was also a wolf spider I swear was screwing with me on my porch. I smashed her and her babies went everywhere. I didn't have anything flammable. And she wasn't letting me in the house plus I was barefoot. I murdered her and all her babies too.

The Kuvasz has smashed out her fair share of spiders since her arrival here - I love her for it.

There hasn't been much incident with them in the house recently but once around 3 years ago I was washing my face late at night and this HUGE brown spider comes crawling up the drain OMG. I screamed and bashed it with a towel until it ceased to exist, then threw the towel outside.

My mother always sad that it was bad luck to kill spiders . . . and if you kill a spider it will rain.

65% of the country is in drought.

Get to it :D

Spiders outside I can deal with. The outside is their house, inside of mine is MINE. and I'm not sharing it willingly.

Last year I had a whole section of my flower garden that didn't get weeded because I had this huge garden spider make its web there. I left it be and it left me be.
