Yay fun thread :p

Okay I'm just wondering what everyone else does with the dog poop in their yard. I don't have the luxury anymore of having a decent sized fenced in backyard where poop only needed to be picked up once or twice a week and tossed in the trash and all was well.

My situation now is that I'm in a townhouse, with a good amount of yard space considering it's a townhouse, and my dogs are mostly going to the bathroom near the front door (which is the only door I have). This is mostly fine and I do want to pick up their poop frequently, but I don't want to be constantly going through plastic bags by bagging it up every time they go. The other dilemma is that it turns into FLY CENTRAL the moment that poop hits the ground and it's gross and obnoxious to have a fly swarm right outside my door.

I don't know if there's a happy solution where I don't have to bag it up right away every time AND don't have to create fly breeding grounds in my yard?

I live in a condo with a pretty small front yard area, and honestly - I just pick it up every time. I mean, if they go right before bed or as soon as I get up, I may leave it until I'm actually dressed and walking out the door. But I don't leave it for days. Particularly if you have close neighbors or an HOA, I think staying very on top of poop is a big thing. We aren't allowed to have the trash can outside, and I can't stand the smell of poop that builds up in the can in the garage, so I have a 5 gallon paint can with a lid stuck behind a bush on the side of the driveway. Bags get tossed in there, and that gets dumped in the trash can when it gets wheeled out to the curb on trash day.

No help in the poop dept, but I've heard that by adding ACV to food that can help deter flies from the piles.

I'm picking it up once or twice a day. With Juno it wouldn't be a big deal because that's about as often as she poops, but puppy is going A LOT lol so I'd be using tons of bags on a daily basis.

Interesting about the ACV. I used to give that Juno but haven't in months. Might have to restart! I would have to double check on if I can even have a garbage can outside, because it would be nice to be able to scoop it into a small one and then empty THAT into my big bin, but that still wouldn't help with the flies I dont think!

We have a galvanized garbage can, about knee height, that the poop goes into. I use either heavy weight trash bags, contractor bags are two regular bags in it. It gets tied up and goes out with the trash as needed.

Nope. Doesn't work. Neither does spraying the pee area with white vinegar.

Can you create a more suitable poop spot further away from the doorway? Use an x-pen or something, cover the ground with fresh mulch, and train the dogs to only go there?

The mulch will also help cover the poop smell.

Litter scoop, old ice cream bucket to scoop it up, and a small trash can with lime sprinkled in to dump it into.

I pick poo up like... A few times a week. The lime helps with the flies and smell, as well as degrading it. Which is good, because the bin doesn't get dumped anywhere.

You can also sprinkle like in the poo area to get rid of smell and flies

I have two dogs, and pick up poop daily, year round. We have a galvanized lidded trash can, lined with a heavy duty grade trash bag. I have an aluminum pooper scooper thing (2 separate pieces, it's new, and I can't believe I waited until 12 years into dog ownership to get one), so I scoop all the poop for the day into it, and dump it in the trash can, and lock the lid back on. It's goes out for garbage pick up every week.

I pick up about once every one or two days, when I get out there, depending on work, and I just pooper scooper it all into another small bin and dump it into the large trash can.

This with a hand shovel would work well!

Right now, with the three greyhounds, we have two backyard poop composters. When we only had one dog and lived in a townhouse, I'd just scoop as soon as she went and brought it inside to flush it. Bathroom was right near the back door.

Wonder if you couldn't find a used Diaper Genie? I've always wondered if they'd work.

We have a metal trashcan on our back porch where the poop goes. When the lid is on, you can't smell it!
