hi everyone i went to the pound this morning and i seen a pitbull there well i talked to my mom about it and she said i can get him but his adoption date is the 18th so i have time to ask some questions.. well to tell u a little i never had a pitbull before but i was raised around rotts dobermans chihauahus german shepherds etc etc well witha pitbull can u people tell me what i should get for him? what will i expect from owning one of my own?
i usto take care of 2 pitbulls when i lived in colorado so i have experiance with them. thanks everyone

How do the rescue staff say he acts? Have you actually gotten a chance to interact with him yet?

A good Pit is a wonderful companion animal, just remember that training, consistency and socializing are so very important. They also need exercise, both mental and physical, and they thrive on lots and lots of attention.

pits are simple . all you have to do is the same thing you do with other dogs i have a pit . all you need to no is make sure when people are around him make sure they no hes a pitand they cant do anything quickly around him because he mite think they are trying to hurt you andthey could bite so all you need to no is to watch the people around you and to watch your pit and you well be fine !!!!

well when i seen him i feel inlove with him at first sight i sat next to the kennel and he ran up to the cage and started to lick my hand.. after that i went to the front counter to aks them how he is and they said he is a loving boy. i asked about his past and they said the oweners just dropped him off cause they were leaving out of town and he is only 3 months old. u can tell hes pit very easily it says he is a purebred and he looks like a purebred as soon as i get him ( pray someone else doesnt by the 18th ) i will take a picture of him and me and him by hisself thanks everyone if yall want to give me more advice i will love to have more also my mom heard bad stories of pits and children i have a nephew that is turning 1 soon and he loves dogs does anyone have any advice on that? what should i do? cause i know if one of my dogs attack one of my nephews i will never forgive myself

I have two nephews and two neices whom all my dogs love including my Pits. I would just so a easy no pressure introduction between him and your nephew with lots of postive talk and attention. This is a long shot but maybe bring your nephew to the shelter and see how the dog reacts to him then he sounds like a rather friendly happy go lucky kind of guy.

My oldest neice when she visits often naps with my male Pitbull Zeus and ever since she saw Homeward Bound has renamed him Chance (I know he's not a pit but my neice doesent). All three of my pits are all into kids they just see little people more energetic then me and lost of fun to be around .

oh i have a great story to tell you !! my pit or the pit i use to have is now living with 8 small kids like 2 to 6 years old . well any way the dad and one of his sons was taking a walk and spudy ( thats the name of pit) was polling on the rope and when the dads son grabs the rope. spudy stoped polling because he new that the son how was about 4 yeas old could not handle the polling . so you can tell that to your mom. thats one very true story!!! i hope you get him !!!! im praying for you!!!!

My stepson's pit is the sweetest dog you'll ever meet. He loves everyone. With any dog, it's all in how you raise the dog.

I have to disagree there. You can't raise a Pit just like you would another dog. You can't raise a Pit like you would a Labrador. You can't let a Pit run loose at a dog park like you would 'any other dog'.
Yes, you have to socialize them, train them, etc. like you would 'any other dog' but they need more of a constant watchfulness.
I'd say since you are used to Akitas and Dobes, a Pit should be ok. Pitties are wonderful with kids and people, (they were bred to NOT bite people) but they are dog aggresive and they should never be fully trusted around other dogs. You also have to make sure that your Pittie will never get into trouble. If it does, that is just one more bad thing the Public associates with Pits.

Pit Bulls are wondeful dogs, however, they were bred to fight other dogs. The goal was to have dogs that were aggressive towards other canines, but sweet and calm towards humans. Once a fight had ended, the owners of the dogs needed to go into the pit to get their dog without being bitten. To be calm and well-behaved, it's important that pit bulls are socialized with other animals and small children.
Pit bulls and dog parks do not match. They are dog-agressive, and it doesn't depend on how they're raised--the breed is still dog-agressive.

well nevermind about this forum.... my dad wont let me get him and i guess his ownners are trying to get him back? i dont know though and i seen another dog but my dad always blows my high on a dog so i have to wait till i get rid of all my dogs sept rocky well w/e im just depressed i really really want a puppy so i can train it myself cause my mom or dad always takes over i hate it

I'm not sure I agree with what your saying here. Why would you have to make sure you tell your company that your dog is a pit bull? I have people around my pit bull (3 and 4 year old kids included), and there is no reason for them to be uncomfortable or not do anything quickly. If you tell someone that comes over, "Don't make any quick movements" they are going to think your dog is mean. My 7 year old nephew runs around and plays chase in the house with my pit bull. A friend of mine brings her 4 year old son over sometimes, and he cuddles with the dog on the couch. If a dog is trained right, there is no reason to worry about it biting someone. Yes, a pit bull is very loyal and wants to protect their owners, but just because someone makes a sudden movement doesn't mean anything.
