Herschel, I know you have the best of intentions, but if you go back and read your posts, they are certainly not all polite. It's okay. I think, with a few people who have posted ("I spank my dog to teach it right from wrong" :yikes:) your informative arguments are not going to help, no matter how polite you are. *shrug*

I'm kinda sad my post wasn't responded to, or the several like it. *crocodile tears* Okay, that was my trolling for the day.. lol.

I agree with Grammy... once again.. I hope lurkers have learned a lot from this thread and the hundreds more like it.

What? PM me if you have to explain that but I honestly believe I've been polite and constructive.
I just went through all 15 pages and didn't read extremely thoroughly, but did more than just skim. And I can not find one thing that was anything but good, solid information. I see nothing rude. A person is entitled to his opinion. Did I miss something? I suppose I could have....would like to see it copied here.

WOW!!!! Well, fellow chazzers! I just want to let you know how much info this thread has given me. Although, I would never pay that much for a puppy anyway. If I ever do have that kind of money I WON'T even consider it. I never knew. I volunteer maybe twice a year at the no kill shelter here in town, and every time I go in there are some dogs that I know will still be there next time I go in.

I know that all the best info in the world can be useless to a closed mind, and that can feel frustrating and passions rise. You are all such passionate people here and that is why I love this forum. I love you guys, the three other forums I was on have just disappeared from my browser shortly after finding you all.

We can't make everyone see the truth, or understand how damaging our arrogance can be sometimes, but you have opened my mind about breeders and owners and all the info posted on this thread has just given me a wealth of info and education to help spread the word to people that may have a more open point of view and hopefully go to save a few more shelter dogs.

We may not have helped one person here this week but think of how many people we may help see next week.

I just volunteered to walk the shelter dogs in the next three upcoming parades because of this post and when I walk the dogs I know have tons of info to talk to the patrons at the parade about. Hopefully that helps a few more loveable pets find homes.

Even worse, imagine if animals bred themselves. The world would go absolutely mad!
Your lack of understanding of a logical argument shows your lack of intelligence and financial sence.

Ill breed a Toy Goldendoodle especially for you! For $5000, with a full refund if you accept the pup without inspecting my facilities or the Dam or Sire.

Great post Mamabear. :hail: You're so right. If even a couple of people "get it," and they tell a couple of people who "get it," all the better for the poor, unwanted shelter dogs and all the better for preserving the integrety of our purebred dogs.

Uh Oh! I just found out they have 2 new amstaff puppies they rescued from a kill shelter in Wisconsin! Maybe I shouldn't have volunteered to walk the dogs in the parade this weekend! Pitties are my love! Help me to be strong and give some other owners a chance! They are only 5 months old so they have a good shot of going to good homes. They are so cute!

I think the sad thing in this thread is that the OP was probably lied to and her (cute) pup might very well end up with health issues as she/he probably never saw any proof of the testing done on the parents (or maybe it was a fake, too). And he/she doesn't seem to care. I would be mad, personally.

Maybe he/she will learn then.

Although personally, just the idea of giving money to someone who uses animals to make money disgusts me. I've done the mistake one, never again.

Ok now the dilemma : do I post or don't I ???? I DO !
I think the problem is that for a person to charge $ 2200 dollars for a mutt is that their hoping to make a buck off some dipsh!t like Paris Hilton who carried her dog around in a purse for the media attention and now nobody sees it at all. Designer dog + outrages price = GREEDY BYB !

I don't get it!!! When I was a kid mixed breeds like cockapoos, peekapoos, and the like were mutts and were usually 'free to a good home' or $50 each to try to get some of the money back spent on vet bills. They were the kind of dogs people in my neighborhood had because they either rescued them or found them through those types of ads. You know, the type of people who were just simply lookin for a dog for their kids to grow up with. What the heck happened?
It pains me to see how many mixed pups come through our rescue that are products of people trying to get a certain look by breeding this dog with that dog. It's just so unbelievable sad.
Paying mega bucks for a mix is just outrageous!!!! Especially, as Jessie pointed out, there are 3 sizes of poodles. Poodles are 'labs that don't shed'. They are loyal, smart, great with kids. All around good dogs. It's the people who spend the money that keep this going!!!
I wish the OP much luck with his pup. But, please, take it from someone who has two healthy pet shop pups and has seen the light. What you put your money into is not helping the dogs of this country.

I totally agree to that. My puppy Is a mutt, now I have seen the paticular mix (chihuahua/pug) in the paper a lot going for upwards of $600.00, but the lady only charged me $25.00 with first shots incl. and I had to sign a spay/neuter contract. She wasn't looking to make money, she wanted to find good homes for her foster pups. At the same token, I could imagine spending 2000+ on a mixed dog, but that is just me

WOW.

Now, I'm a new member here, my family has always purchased dogs from BYBs and never had a problem with an animal, and I never really thought about BYBs being all that terrible until I got here and I found everyone to be EXTREMELY INTENSE about it.

To be honest, I've always viewed the purebred breeders as the villians because they seemed so elitist to me. Everyone that has bred dogs has added to overpopulation, and that's a fact. You make more puppies, there's a higher puppy population, period. I get now that reputable breeders are preserving a breed's health and disposition and so the fact that they are adding to overpopulation is okay because they're creating healthy dogs...or something. Okay, maybe I still don't get it entirely. That's okay. I'm not getting another dog for a long time, I already have a dog from a BYB and what's done is done, and I'll keep fighting to understand this whole argument, really I will. The problem is that I can seldom actually make out the argument through all the emotional attacks being thrown. I have to literally force myself to read each post because I find myself reading the first sentence and going, "oh boy, not this jerk again..." What shocks me the most is not the argument, because I can kind of make that out and sympathize. Probably when I get it totally I'll full-on agree. What is shocking is the way that many people in this forum approach other people, especially new people.

You guys terrify me. The only reason I keep coming back is because I want all the information I can get to help care for Winston. I am scared to post or socialize on this forum. I'm making myself do it, but I'm also reading old posts and the more I'm exposed to, the more afraid I am that everyone is going to attack me. Many of you are mocking and sarcastic and throw underhanded insults at one another and then pretend like if you didn't say it outright, it wasn't suggested. I want to like you all, and I want to learn, but many of you outright scare me. I don't remember specific names, either. I'm new. All I get is the feeling that the new guy said this and everybody else said this, a million to one. It makes everybody look bad, not just the individuals who are actually saying it.

I read the whole, "this post is okay because we educated lurkers" thing, but honestly, if you handed this thread to a person with little to no dog knowledge and had them read it cold-turkey, I think most would come off thinking you were snobbish and would consequently bad-mouth purebred breeders as elitist. I did this, actually, linked this site for a friend of mine, and that was the reaction.

Maybe the OP is out to get a rise out of you. But you don't end up looking great to the lurking masses when you close your eyes, fling insults, and insist that "I didn't see it!" The OP gave curt responses meant to make the opposition look over-aggressive and irrational. Guess what? He met with success. I read a lot of comments generally along the lines of: "look, we said your puppy was cute, okay, just admit that you messed up and tell us you won't do it again!" This feels like a religious confession and repentance. I feel like I've joined a dog cult and the forum is God. You can see why I'm a little iffy here.

And as for the "Well if you can't handle it, leave this forum! Survival of the fittest!" arument? I think that's what makes this forum feel so elitist. For heaven's sake, I'm not here to prove I'm made out of steel and NOTHING CAN KILL ME, I'm here to talk to more experienced people about healthy dog treats and making him comfortable with nail clipping.

I don't want to turn this argument around and seem like an abrasive trouble-maker attacking the Forum Gospel. I just think it's important to let those who are particularly passionate and maybe even a little over-the-top know that sometimes their opinions come across as a little too fire and brimstone for the beginners.

This post isn't a threat saying that if you don't shape up, I'm out. I just feel like I might hit a point where I feel like I have to leave this forum because it's too aggressive, and I think it's only fair to let everyone see why I feel like that.

Very well said. :) I think sometimes, a lot of us forget what it's like to be new and jumping into a forum where so much is going on.

We're a passionate group here. And when something is wrong, we're a group that is passionate about that wrong. We don't always handle ourselves well, but we are indeed, human.

With that said, I hope you do stick around and get to know us better and let us get to know you. We're not always perfect and with the exception of a few really bad apples every now and then we're a great group of dog lovers.

Yup,...we're a bunch of jerks all right and we're terrifying. And to think you have to force yourself to read posts. But do stay a while and use all the information you can get your hands on before you hit the point where you have to go. And watch out for all the goblins who might attack you.

That was well said. Yes, we're passionate and human. And most of us have strong feelings about dogs and their well being.

That said, people who throw two dogs together without any knowledge of genetics or the science of breeding and call themselves breeders are doing dogs a disservice. Those people we call back yard breeders.

There is a need to keep purebred dogs able to do the jobs they were designed and bred to do. There are many things to consider when deciding to breed two purebred dogs. Back yard breeders do not do these things. It has nothing to do with "elitist." It's people who are genuinly trying to improve upon the last generation and going through arduous steps to strive for that goal....to improve the breed.

There are back yard breeders and mills which breed two different breeds together and call it some cutsie name, combining parts of both breeds and call the offspring a breed. They are NOT a breed. They are a mutt. These cute names and these back yard breeders calling them a breed is immoral. They charge a lot of money and the uneducated public buys into it.

Meanwhile, while they're turning out thousands of mixed breed puppies, millions and millions of mixed breed puppies are languishing in shelters, living their lives in cages. A few get adopted, but most get euthanized or live out their lives in cages with no family and nothing necessary to thrive.

There is a need for healthy purebred dogs that are bred well, able to do the job they were bred to do. There is NO need to be producing more mixed breed dogs. For every puppy born to these "greeders," there goes a potential family for a pathetic dog in a shelter.

I hope that explains it, at least briefly. There is more information to be found as to what constitutes a reputable breeder, a back yard breeder and a puppy mill. There's information about where to get a dog. (not from pet stores and other brokers) Those dogs usually come from mills. Puppy mills are devestating places for dogs. When people buy dogs from these entities like pet stores, they are supporting the inhumane treatment of animals. These puppies also are taken way too early from their mothers and litter mates and are unsocialized, mal adjusted, very often unhealthy dogs.
