I don't go into pet stores that sell puppies. Luckily around me there are just a bunch of Petsmarts, yeah they still sell small animals and reptiles, but no puppies! They have kittens, but they are from the rescue, or a shelter.

There is a Petland or something in Fairfax VA, and there is some puppymill in WV that advertises in all the papers.

I liked the Pet cetra that we had in our mall. But they went bankruped. They sold dogs and cats, but they were all rescued dogs and cats. The one problem I had with them is their prices were so much higher than other petstores.

I usually end up buying my dog food and dog supplies and the feeds store. They have everything there and dont sell animals.

That's the petland I was talking about. ughh. It's gross. It's right next to a chuckie cheese, too, so I wonder how many puppies they sell as little kids' birthday presents. ):

I have only gone to one store in my life that sold puppies, and it was hours away in another town. They only had one puppy at the time...some little black dog. Then they had a book with pictures of people and their new puppies. They had 'Toy Aussies', 'Miniature Beagles', Mastiffs, etc, etc. I was disgusted and was like, "Mom, look at all these stupid people paying 1500 for a badly bred puppy mill dog". The lady by the puppy was giving me a lovely look, but never said anything. Then I think she tried to hint at the sign near me that read, "We do not support Puppy Mills", so I pointed and said, "Ha, look at the sign. What a bunch of bull".

None of the towns near me sell puppies/kittens. :D I'm happy about that.

I go in but I don't buy. Most pet stores beside the ones in malls, sell dogs and cats from the local shelters who are having a hard time being adopted.

Whoever thought pet stores should be put in malls is an idiot. So while people are out shopping on a Saturday afternoon, they can impulsively buy a puppy too! How convenient!

I go in just to make sure the animals are alive. Seriously. My friend flipped out on an employee once because not a single animal had any water. I don't know if I should be slightly glad that it's not just because they "forget" to give them water--everyone gets water at closing time. We concluded that they must restrict water during the day just so they have less of a mess to clean up.

I really want to tell the customers to go home and do some research. Every time I see someone buy a little yorkiepooschnoodledoodle I cringe. Ugh. Needless to say I don't go to this store very often because it just makes me very upset.

Animal Planet is doing a special on Petland on the 17th, which I want to see.

There was a Petland that started up in town last year- I haven't seen if it's still there, though. I hope not.

I think it is the now now now attitude some people have. Why would they (in their minds) wait months or longer for a pup from a breeder when they can get one instantly from a pet store or someone in the paper. They rarely 'get it'...even if you explain slowly and in small words:rolleyes:

What I don't understand is how anyone can afford pet store puppies!?! The petland in Tucson sold their yorkies for $3400. :yikes:

Ours here are not that expensive. They're in the mall so I see them whenever I go shop in the windows. They're usually $300 - $600 for the big dogs and about $700 - $900 for the small dogs. I still can't understand why they're in business though. They've been convicted of animal cruelty twice now.

Yep, I live a bit outside of Tucson but go into Tucson for many things. I've never been in the Petland here, but there's a pet store called The Puppy Place and their puppies are so expensive! And the mixes are even more expensive!

Impulse buys are the reasons these pups and these businesses do well

I see it all the time, we hit the mall, go into the petstore and that puppy is just SOOO cute, you wanna think about it and the guys says "this pup might not be here tomorrow".. so credit card out, $1200+ later, puppy goes home and petstore make a sale

They are always in malls and places where people shop, MALLS..the perfect place for impulse buys. its where impulse buying was BORN! cute purse, cute shoes...cute puppy.
