What do you pay for pet rent? The place I'm moving into is charging $25 a month for one dog...on top of a $250 deposit. It's a big company, so what do you think my chances are of talking them down to like...$15 a month? Sawyer goes to work with me every day and has his AKC CGC title...shouldn't that count for something??

Sorry and forgive me if I sound dumb, but what do you mean by pet rent? Are you saying it's extra on top of your normal housing rent? Thats unheard of here, well at least I've never heard of any landlords doing it..

Sorry can you please explain it a bit to me?

Cheers

Carolyn :)

Geeze! Pet rent too?? Cause you know that they take long hot showers and always leave the lights on??? We just had to pay a $250 pet deposit and that's it. I personally think that pet rent is alittle over kill unless they are going to scoop poop for you! LOL

I rent apartments out and I never heard of such a thing as Pet Rent. I charge a deposit fee that is refundable if the apartment is left in the same undamaged condition it was in before the tenant moved in. But Pet Rent? WTH is that? Landlords charge more for extra people in an apartment because they use more water, there is more wear and tear on plumbing, etc. Which of these things do dogs or cats add cost to? Ludicrous.

Yep ToscasMom, here in Australia, we call the deposit "bond". It is refunded if you left the house in good condition. I don't think in Australia, landlords could get away with charging pet rent. Over here Tenants have alot of rights, not just landlords. When you sign a lease, or start renting, you get a very thick book, with guidelines and obligation rules for both parties.

I think you would find here, that if it was known a landlord was adding extra onto rents or bonds and calling it pet rent, it would be illegal

Some places here charge $250.00- $500.00 deposit for them and up to $250.00 a month extra pet rent. They also charge for children over a set # or more then so many adults. No rent controls in Nevada.

wow. i havn't heard of pet rent before. thats insane.

here tenants do seem to have more rights than the landlords, which is good if your a tenant, but we have a friend having an awfully hard time trying to evict her tenant

Yes, it was around even 15 years ago when I lived in Houston and rented. I had to pay a deposit for my pet plus an additional $100.00 per month added to my rent.

There are all sorts of places here that charge a pet rent, on top of the deposit. Some are asking 50 a month more per dog. I'm pretty lucky, the 2 places I've had since I moved haven't asked for pet rent or much more in the way of a pet deposit. I think it's rediculous(sp?) to ask for a pet rent...but I guess it's just another way to get money out of renters.

Pet Rent?????

That's milking it a bit isn't it.

I never paid any rent for mine. Just had to leave the place how I got it (and it was brand new!! EEK!) and pay for any damages/repairs etc etc myself!!!

Though, I do know places that will ask for an extra deposit for a pet, but that's it....

Having just looked at homes.... the first place wanted to charge an extra $50 per dog per month on top of a rather large pet deposit. Bwwhhaha. NO.

The place we have chosen, however, is still the same amount per month with an even larger pet deposit as the house is newly remodeled and they are concerned with wear and tear- which is completely understandable.

I would never pay an additional fee per month, that is what the deposit is for. Maybe offer a larger deposit, you know Sawyer is well behaved and will not cause any damage, so when you move out, you know you'll get it back. No worries there. If you don't like it, find another place to take your money.

I've found if you are up front and honest it always works better. When I emailed around to these places, the very first thing I said is, "we have three big dogs and are willing to pay an extra deposit. will you accept them?" Every place that got back to me said they would. You just gotta take control of the situation. ;) Good luck.

Thanks for the responses. My mentor is going to write me a letter of "recommendation" stating just how well-behaved Sawyer is to see if that will hold any sway.

I unfortunetly can't really take my money elsewhere...this is the only place I found that both takes dogs of Sawyer's size and is in the price range I can afford. The next best place was about $100 more a month just in rent without utilities (which are included here), which I just can't do. I will be stretching to afford this place for a bit.

I'll talk to them Thursday and see what they say. I have to get some paperwork from them anyway.
