This reminds me that I saw a dietician claiming that cooking at high temperatures releases carcinogens. Hmm.

Even not following this diet though, this also reminds me I need to buy a food thermometer.

Carcinogens that there is some evidence that we may be resistant to . .. remember, they do this research in rats.

However, its a good reason not to overcook your food.

All things in moderation . . .

My boyfriend actually got me turned on to eating my meat more rare. We don't eat steak much (keeps it as much more of an exciting thing for when we do get it!) but not I see a steak that's 'well-done' and I can't see how I ate it before.

I want to try more game meats too. This paleo cookbook lists meats a little differently than what I know, I thought bison was a game meat but this book says it's not. Regardless, I really want to try it, and our local version of whole foods has bison meat that, while expensive, is begging to be bought.

Most bison is farm raised, just like cattle. Still better for you than beef though. You can get grass fed bison . . .it costs the earth however. Grass fed beef (by a half or quarter cow) would also be more game like. Make friends with a hunter, and get some venison (maybe trade part of that half cow?)

Yes, they see more carcinogens in pan fried or grilled foods...when they're at high temps, especially on a grill when you get blackened parts of the meat. It was suggested on something I saw on Dr. Oz about this, (he had a cancer specialist on there) that you can put sprigs of rosemary on the grill, making sort of a bed... and then set your meat on top of that to protect it a little from the direct high heat. I'm not sure, but it seems that rosemary not only makes a physical barrier, but also something about rosemary itself.

When I do stir fry, I try to keep the heat rather on the low side and cook it slowly and not too much. But completely raw vegetables seem to be harder to digest and I think we lose some of the benefits that way as well as over cooking loses nutrients. Steaming vegetables is the best way to keep in the nutrients. I don't believe we utilize stuff quite as well if it is raw...that is with things that have tougher cell walls.

I think I must have been eating this way and not even knowing it. I have eaten very, very little grain and if I had any, it was whole grain....but very occasionally. (oats and quinoa) I was eating small amounts of meat and copious amounts of vegetables and a fair amount of fruits and nuts, beans etc. Basically no processed foods, not too much fat but a little. Most of the fat comes from avocados, olives, nuts, olive oil etc. But yeah, eggs and some dairy, but not much at all, like a little milk in my coffee or a taste of cheese at a party or something. I dropped 20 lbs in a very short time. Now, I haven't been quite as strict and am not losing very fast. Grrrr. I need to drop another 10 - 15 or thereabout and I'm just sort of maintaining. What I'm doing differently is eating more cheese, some things like crackers with the cheese and too many nuts and going out a little more often with my family than I should and eating things like Thai food with yummy wide rice noodles and pizza. LOL. That must be why I'm not losing at the moment.:wall:

So you don't think early man walked around on the plains and stopped to pick some grasses with seeds and ate that along with the little insects that crawled around on the grass? :p

The idea of non grass fed beef is so strange to me. All the farms around here have their cows out on grass (well in the winter they eat hay)

As to the carcinogens. They are everywhere lol. Its like nitrates, people worry about them in things like bacon but seem to over look them in things like celery and spinach (which are full of them). Shrugs, I love a good BBQ steak and am not going to sweat it. Also a few new papers have shown that low carb high fat diets are quite successful in fighting cancer ;)

Paleo and raw are different though, most Paleo recipes are cooked stuff and there's a lot of options and ideas that are great for even loosing weight and eating better. Subbing shredded carrots or cooked finely chopped cauliflower for rice, using slices of yam or squash for noodles in a lasagna, and using nut flours for baking.

Remove the processed sugars and go for maple syrup and honey.

Even replacing a few meals like that is a good thing. I just made a spinach meatball soup with four things, meatballs (crumbled) half a thing of chopped frozen spinach, leftover pizza sauce and chicken broth. Yummy and healthy.

For dinner I'm thinking fish served over fried 'rice' made from cauliflower with fresh veggies, and tomorrow might be pork chops (leftover in the freezer) and veggies. I may also do a twice baked sweet potato for dinner one night. I am planning on doing either meat and veggies, or yam/sweet potato and veggies (so meatless) or an egg dish with yup, veggies. Maybe even pancakes and bacon for dinner if I gut nut flour (grain free), with a maple coconut cream topping and fruit.

Yes basically paleo is no modern foods. So you can have all the fruits, nuts, meat and veggies you want :)

When I am done losing weight I plan to eat a more 'paleo' way. Only with dairy... not about to give up cheese :D

Its kind of like eating 'raw' for dogs. Its a more biologically sound way for humans to eat. Our evolution hasn't caught up to our food lifestyle.
The irony comes in when you find out how much looking you have to do to find foods that aren't "modernized" by chemical and hormonal additions and just plain genetic modifications :(

I've been eating primal (version of paleo) for about 4 months. The idea, like others have said, is that you go back to eating like a caveman. I started it trying to make myself feel better, because I felt like CRAP almost 24/7. I adjusted my diet to be strictly meat, vegetables, fruit and specific nuts.

It really works if you stick with it. You learn to look at labels and see how companies have started getting tricky to hide added sugar and starches.

I've lost 20+ lbs since I started. I didn't need to lose it, but I feel 100% after I cut the addiction to sugar.

I know, hard to find 'real' food. Even yogurt is often full of other stuff. But then there are some things that aren't hard to make and do.

Yogurt is something we'll still eat, but instead of buying the expensive greek yogurt (which in this house would be inhaled by the big container!) I'm making it and then we'll add fruit and nuts to it along with honey. MMM!

*shrugs* I don't believe really strict dieting is healthy (especially for me)...but paleo just seems the same as "healthy eating". I don't know, what do people trying to "eat healthy" eat besides meat, fruit, veggies, nuts? Yoghurt? Quinoa? I don't think those things are bad for you.

Meat, fruit, veggies, and nuts are what you eat when you eat paleo. No paleo people don't eat yogurt if it contains milk because it's dairy and no they don't eat quinoa because it's a grain.

Dairy is a point of contention - many people can't tolerate it so there's a group of people who believe we shouldn't eat it. Other people aren't that concerned about what other people eat and feel if you can digest dairy without problems go for it.
As for grains, you might be surprised if you read around about recent research on grains and exactly how bad for you they are - particularly when it comes to wheat.

I'm still keto. Fell off the train May/June.. Got back on a month ago. Feel better again. It's a sustainable way for me to eat long term as long as people don't tempt me back onto carbs. A carby meal I can go back just fine though the carbs will make me feel like trash..

More than one and the cravings for junk come back.

I ate a couple of baked potatoes the other week.

Felt like crap -- and craved junk.

No more white potatoes for me. Other people can eat them and be fine, but they do a number on me. Even too much fruit other than berries and citrus. I guess there's a reason I don't like it much?

The idea behind not eating dairy is that humans actually don't get much of anything from it past a certain age. Adults aren't built or meant to have dairy, and especially not from cows. Most people don't realize JUST how bad it is and how crappy it makes you feel until after you cut it. Personally, I noticed hormone improvements and I dropped a lot of "bloat" weight after I cut dairy. If I dare drink milk midway through my cycle, I'm a raging bitch and my cramps and bewb issues are SO much worse.

Most of the time though, I eat around 70% Paleo/Primal. I'm not super into it as much anymore because my food drive hit rock bottom when I got Implanon, but I have figured out what works well for my body. I lost weight eating 3500-4000 calories a day. I lost 25-30lbs, actually. And I'm STILL losing weight although I have tried bulking up my carbs more with potatoes and veggies to compensate for everything my metabolism is burning off. I still have a sammich every now and then, my morning coffee with hazelnut creamer and Swiss Miss cocoa. There's ramen and canned ravioli's in the house. Cereal here and there. I'm not super strict, but even putting in a little effort gave me a lot of incentive to keep going. And I definitely notice when I'm taking in more saturated fat and when I'm not. I don't eat a ton of fruit because it's too much sugar for me.

Paleo definitely isn't strict, it's mostly just "healthier eating" like other said, combined with the knowledge that saturated fat is not bad for you and grain is. That alone puts a lot of people off because they've bought into the idea that grain is the best thing ever and saturated fat is the devil. It's the exact same reasoning with dog food. Grain is cheap and easy to process, and they can make a huge surplus off of it. It's a filler, not actually good for you.

It seems like common sense, but a lot of the bogus research in the past 50 years or so has put people off-track.

I think eating strictly paleo is a strict diet. Now I know a lot of people, me included, who do the paleo-ish diet. I still eat Greek yogurt and some dairy, for example. We don't do a lot of carbs and eat sweet potatoes. But we're also not strictly paleo.

Oh, I know what paleo is, but I'm saying to me, it doesn't seem that much different than just trying to "eat healthy" without putting some fad diet name onto it. To me, eating healthy is being paleo and has alsways been paleo, even before I had heard of a paleo diet, maybe with one or two minor differences.

A lot of it too is what you eat and how much of each thing, and how. Lean roast beef is quite different than greasy fried burgers with tons of salt, and a salad with olive oil and lemon is not quite the same as a salad dripping with fake mayo.

Tonight's dinner: Fish and fried 'rice' with veggies. No real rice was injured, we used stunt cauliflower which was grated and cooked at the last minute before the eggs were tossed into the mix. Regret telling the fam what was in it, I think the boy would have eaten double if he didn't know it wasn't rice. :rofl1:

But paleo is VASTLY different than just "eat healthy." For one thing, ask twenty people what "eat healthy" means. You'll get a different response from all of them. Some are going to tell you it's low carb, some are going to tell you it's low calorie, some are going to tell you low fat. And probably at least half would tell you "WHOLE GRAINS!!!1!!" is part of eating healthy. You yourself mentioned yogurt and that you don't think it's bad for you.

But that's not paleo. Paleo isn't low carb, low calorie, it's definitely not low fat - and whole grains? NOPE.
Way way different than "eat healthy." Paleo was ranked as one of the most difficult "diets" to follow in fact in a study a few years ago.

For the record I don't even eat a paleo diet... the amount of peanut butter I eat would probably cause some of the hardcore paleo folks to keel over. However I see a lot of legit science behind it coming from people who aren't even preaching "EAT PALEO!"
