Our dog is (most likely) a shepherd/husky mix who is just over 6 years old. We've had her since she was eight-weeks. Normally, she is very gentle and well-mannered, as she gets plenty of attention and walks. We normally have her in the house with us while we're at home, and she sleeps at night on a bed we've laid for her in our bedroom. It's been this way as long as she's been ours.
In her early puppy days, she went through a rather destructive chewing phase where she basically destroyed a wooden backyard fence. Since she was about two, this ceased to be a problem. Until lately, that is.
Recently, she's developed a fondness for the taste of entry-doors and their accessories. It started out about a month ago with her pulling a sliding screen-door off its track and tearing holes in it. I fixed it immediately, and just as immediately she pulled it down and tore it up again. The next time I fixed it, it had a dog grate installed on it, so now the screen door is being left alone.
Last night we returned home to find that she'd ripped the exterior moulding from the sliding glass door in our living room. She pulled it right off of the wall, nails and all. She also chewed up the door itself. This morning, we found she'd also destroyed a screen that covers up the entry to our house's crawlspace, in addition to doing a fair amount of chewing on the entry door off of our laundry room.
One thing is pretty obvious. She wants in. She's never been allowed inside when we weren't home, and this is when she does most of the damage. Being that I'm getting tired of repairing my house and scolding my dog, I'm wondering if there's a training method or training aid that might keep her from doing these things in the future. The trick of it is that it'd need to work while we're away from home during the day.
Could any of you give us a few suggestions please?
