Clan of the Cave Bear, that really good book by Jean Auel?? Did you guys know there was a MOVIE made of it in the 80s?? Poor Justin had to sit through it with me last night.. well, part of it anyway... it was so bad, I couldn't make him sit through the whole thing! I mean, it was mostly bad because it was made in the 80s, but it was also weird watching Ayla (played by Daryl Hannah) get raped repeatedly by a Neanderthal.

I know a lot of you have read the book. Anyone else seen the movie?? If not, it's available on Netflix instant play right now!

If that's the same one I read, I found it incredibly sexist (kept waiting for there to be a point to all the sexism, but apparently there wasn't) with a nice healthy dose of racial stereotyping.

lol nolu.. I didn't think of it like that. I just read it as historical fiction, as a possible reality that could have occurred during that time. I mean, if you read a historical fiction story set in the 1800s when women had basically no rights even in america, does that make that story sexist?

And by racial stereotyping, you mean between Neanderthals and Cro Magnons? 2 races that basically don't exist anymore? *shrugs*

I enjoyed the series. I did not enjoy the movie tho.

Loved the whole series. Yes, I knew about the movie. I caught the tail end of it a few years ago.

Hated the book. It was required reading in 10th grade English class. We watched the movie as well. Didn't think it was possible to hate the story more, but I was, of course, wrong.

Didn't that movie have, like, some kind of violent rape scene in it?

I caught it when I was younger, and I remember seeing that scene, and I think it scarred me for life.

Yeah, didn't really think of it as racist and sexist other than the fact it took place a looooong time ago and that's been around forever. I would have found it really unrelalistic if it didn't include all that it did.

I really liked the first book, read it in 7th or 8th grade and I really liked the second book. But after that it just seemed like they were having sex every other page.

o_O Required reading in TENTH grade? I can't even imagine how well that would go over with most parents these days, especially with the rape scenes (if I'm remembering the right book?). My cousin freaked out because her 10 year old daughter's teacher recommended The Giver and it has ONE page that talks about a sponge bath for old people. She called the school and verbally abused everyone. Then she got really offended when I asked her if she thought she overreacted....lol.

While I was living in a "Red" area, we didn't have a lot of censorship that I recall. We read all of the classics, too, which some communities have pulled from the shelves because of racial/sexual/etc. issues.

What's funny is that, I couldn't for the life of me tell you what the story was about at this point.
