I'm sure this has been talked about many times before, but it's a fun topic and I haven't seen a post about it recently.

What breed and gender do you want your next dog to be? Is there a certain breeder and/or sire or dam you want it from? If not from a breeder, are you going to rescue? What is your timeline for getting it and what do you hope to accomplish with it? How excited are you for Next Dog (on a scale of 1 to insane)? :D

Next dog will either be another Ibizan or another Xoloitzcuintli.

If Ibizan- will more than likely be female. Would be from a breeder who is a friend of mine. I do have a particular line in mind and already know what dam I'm hoping for a puppy out of. This dog would be shown and lure coursed. Depending on how nice the dog turns out, health testing, titles, etc the hope is to breed that dog and start my own line or pair up with the breeder she would come from to continue on with the line.

If Xolo- this really really depends on how Itztli turns out and depending on what is going on with his health right now. If is health stuff is determined to be something genetic then there will be absolutely no plans to breed him. If not genetic, then it depends like I said on how he turns out. I bought him to train for SD work, but also planning to compete him in rally and competitive obedience as well as show him in conformation a little provided his ears end up standing. If down the road we decide he is worthy of breeding then I will consult with my breeder and have her help me find a good match for him. If he is bred then I would want a puppy out of that litter to either train as his SD replacement down the road or as another dog I can show and dabble in sports with. I don't know if I would want a male or female yet. I do know I would probably want a hairless one this time around even though I think the coated xolos are gorgeous.

NextDog will be a Plott. I'm narrowed down to 4 breeders, max. I'd like a big ol' male, but I've ALWAYS had females, so we'll see how that works out. Timeline is looking like after I'm out of vet school, so almost 4 years. It'd be a conformation dog first, and ideally we'd move and could raise another hunting dog. I like to dabble in all sorts of stuff, though (can someone teach me IPO with a hound?!). I'm insanely excited, so I have to just shut my brain off to that sometimes.

Heeler, hopefully tiny with antigravity-like jumping ability. Probably a girl just because Brisbane isn't crazy about other boys, if I wait until he's gone I'll likely end up with a boy because I like boys better. Preferably blue. Likely not for a couple more years at least.

Well, there's a good chance my temporary Toller puppy will become my next dog. I'm really great at impulsive next dog decisions and not the best at sticking with the plan. We'll see. However, the plan for my next dog was the following and is still the plan for my next, next dog.

Breed: Australian Shepherd
Gender: Female. Always, unless for some reason it's not safe (ie: if I had a SSA dog). I have not enjoyed as much my male dog experiences.
Colour: Hopefully black tri or bi with minimal white. But I don't really care, as long as she's a nice dog.
Where from: Journey's breeder, co-breeder, or from a different breeder using one of Journey's breeders dogs.
Sire/Dam: In an ideal world she would be out of a certain beautiful half sister to Journey's dam and Journey's sire. I think those puppies would be amazing... but her breeder thinks they might be too much dog lol. We'll see. I'll be happy with any of her breedings. I love her as a breeder and love all of her dogs.
When: If Toller puppy stays, not until at least 2017. Probably later. If Toller puppy doesn't stay, then sometime between 2016-2018. (that seems so crazy to type!)
Goals: I'm a casual dog sport person. I'll never be highly competitive. It's just not me. So next dog will be the same as my current dogs. We'll dabble in our favourite sports, hopefully get a few titles in our favourite sports, and we'll hang out at home, go for hikes and just have fun.
How excited: Not overly right now haha. Maybe if there was a planned, set in stone breeding and I knew I could have one. But right now I'm just thinking about accomplishing my goals with Journey, enjoying her, Dance and Ripley and raising the fun little Dance-niece coming home tomorrow.

I'm not looking for another dog right now, and probably won't be able to get one for at least another four years, but I am still insanely excited!

I know I want a Border Collie, an Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog, a Koolie, or another ACD.

If it ends up being another ACD (which is the most probable), I definitely want a red one, but gender doesn't really matter to me. It either will come from a local farm whose dogs I really like, or a nice breeder in my area who shows in conformation and herding. Next most probable dog is a BC. I don't care about color or gender, but I do have one specific breeder picked out that I want a dog from (a sports kennel). A Koolie or an ASTCD are both probably not going to happen for Next Dog, mainly because I would most likely end up shipping it in from Australia, and I'm not entirely sure how I would go about making sure the breeder and the dogs are good. There is also the strong possibility that I fall in love with one of my fosters, but I really want to go the breeder route this time.

No matter what breed I get, I want to train it in disc and agility, as well as teach it fun tricks and take it backpacking/hiking/camping with me. Also depending on the temperament, I might also want to certify it as a therapy dog (I know these breeds generally wouldn't make the best therapy dogs, but you never know. Fable is at least half ACD and she definitely has the temperament for it).

Likely either a Border Terrier (from McHenry BT's, but there's a few other breeders I like as well) or an MAS (but I'd be very picky about where I get it from, I'm particular about a certain look as well as temperament). I like boy dogs so 99% will be a boy no matter what breed. I do have my eye on a certain Border Collie breeder as well. But I have a feeling nextdog will be a Border Terrier OR possibly even some kind of terrier and/or small herder mix from a shelter. Mostly, I'm just looking for a pet. Maybe dabble in some stuff like I have with Jackson but overall? Hiking buddy, some trick training, frisbee and fetch, etc.

Next Dog will either be a German Shepherd or Shepherd mix. There's a small (10%) chance I get a dog in 2015, but more than likely I will wait and end up with a dog in 5 years... (very sad, that's sooooo long). Next Dog will definitely be male because I tend to enjoy male dogs more often, not sure why haha. If purebred, I would love a rich dark sable German Shepherd, but if Next Dog is a mix, color probably won't matter. Goals will probably be just a jogging and hiking companion and a best friend :D Might dabble in agility but just for fun, not for the competition. Despite this likely not happening for a while, I'm so very excited for a dog of my own! :)

Wait, off topic, but Annabell you're in Oregon? Hey that's one more Chazzer in Oregon! :D

Stealing Devan's post for the formatting, and also giving two answers because I'm not sure if NewGirl counts as NextDog or not lol

NewDog
Breed: Belgian Malinois

Gender: Female

Colour: Dark red w/ black mask

Where from: Maliraptor here on Chaz (Athos Malinois)

When: Next weekend!!

Goals: I'm just a pet home, so she'll be a spoiled but active companion and a go everywhere dog. We'll do a lot of hiking and running around campus/through parks, and lots of trick training. I will finally teach a rebound and foot stall, I swear. This summer I'd also like to join a club and begin to work towards an IPO2, and possibly dabble in obedience/rally.

How excited: umm KINDA REALLY VERY EXCITED.

NextDog
Breed: German Shepherd Dog

Gender: Male? (depends on a few factors, but male is the safest bet)

Colour: n/a (preference for sable, just don't want a solid)

Where from: There are 2 or 3 potential breedings/breeders I'd really like a dog from

Sire/Dam: Hopefully will be out of a certain sporty sable girl, because that'd be a dream come true. But that depends on too many things (whether there'd even be a breeding, timing, breeder approval, etc.). If not then I would go to one particular breeder working with older lines in CA or see if there's anything available out of a particular PSA3 German Shepherd (would only be a litter done through AI at that point). I have particular bloodlines that I will continue to keep tabs on and look into.

When: 2019 to 2020  Maybe 2018 depending on where I am in life, and even then it would only be because I made an exception for something incredible.

Goals: Active companion and IPO or PSA, if I can find a club for the latter.

How excited: too far out in the future, so just hopeful for now

I do indeed live in Oregon. Portland to be exact. :D Are you here as well?

Oh and that's so exciting about your Malinois!
Yeah, I am! Portland born and raised. I'm in Eugene for the university but heading back next week until early January. I'll be picking up NewGirl from the PDX airport :)

Next dog will be a border collie puppy from a breeder. No breeder selected yet; it's not close enough on the horizon to start pestering the people with dogs I like about where they came from. I do really like my friend's young BC from a fairly popular breeder, but physically he's not my favorite type. We'll see how much I care about that when the time comes. His temperament is fantastic.

Goals? Mostly just ready to have an agility dog who likes the game just as much as I do. I've built up two very soft, stressy rescue dogs into competitive agility dogs (well, Gusto is still a work in progress, but we are getting there!), and this time, I want a different type of challenge. I have no illusions that I will go out there in the 22" class and be someone to be feared, but middle of the road with a dog who loves being out there is 100% fine by me.

It won't happen until one of my current dogs is gone, so hopefully never. Both Meg and Gusto are still happy, fit, and active, and I hope they stay that way for a lot longer.

Dunno. Maybe another rescued dog? Something small/medium and fun.

Also could be BC or ACD or MAS or Sheltie or pyrshep or koolie.

It's too far out to know.

Probably 4ish years. Depends on summer and Mia health. If in 4 years both are still with me I'd probably push it back. Only other option is to go crazy and get Another sooner like maybe next year. Very unlikely. I'd love a dog to be with Hank while he's young but 4 is a lot of dogs for one person.

Breed: Welsh springer, most likely
Gender: female
Color: they only come in red and white
Where from: I know most of the breeders in the region and most are breeding dogs related to Watson in some way or another, so there are a lot of options. I'm not against dogs from other parts of the country, but I don't have much personal experience with those dogs to know if they are what I want temperament-wise.
Sire/Dam: My ideal would be a Watson puppy, but if that doesn't happen, then one related to him because I love the temperaments that come from his line.
When: Could be as early as May, or could be many years from now. I'm setting up a breeding for Watson with puppies due in May, but if I don't take one of them I will probably have a kid with in a few years and then have to wait many more years for NextDog.
Goals: I like to dabble in dog sports. I will definitely get next dog involved in obedience, rally, agility, and nosework, but I'm not interested in being super competitive. Not sure if I'll do conformation with NextDog, mostly because I don't want to breed a female and most show quality female Welshies are kept for breeding.
How excited: I honestly have kind of mixed feelings. I really want a puppy and a second dog, and I know Watson would be so happy if we got a second dog. At the same time, change is scary and going from one dog to two seems like a lot. I'm pretty sure I want to do it, but scared to take the leap.

Likely anothe Dobe. So probably a female show prospect couple years down the road. Hoping Truman's ear recovers and we can show him( he got a god awful blood blister on it and horrible scar tissue all over the end and just now going down).

I would like a lab again someday.

We throw around the idea of a frenchie.

We also go back and forth on a corgi again. They are just different.

If we end up with more than the horses a livestock guardian breed.

So not sure in actual next dog.

Miniature Australian Shepherd female from a breeder; time line would be 6+ months ideally, but could happen sooner.

NextDog for me
Breed: GSD or Belgian Malinois, preferably GSD but would be very happy with a Mal as well.

Gender: Preferably female.

Colour: I like sables and solid blacks best, don't really care as long as she's the right puppy. ;) Dark red w/ black mask preferable for Mal, but again if its the right dog I don't care. As long as its not a washed out poorly pigmented dog its all good.

Where from: Have been watching a couple programs for a while. There is actually a breeding supposed to happen next year that I'm very interested in. I so, so wish I was ready!!! I won't be ready yet, but I'm hoping that its one that might be repeated down the road.

When: Unless things change I'd prefer to wait until Scout is geriatric or gone. She's only six and a half, so yeah. I'm sure things will all come together fast when the time is right!

Goals: I want a dog that I can trial IPO, tracking, OB, and herding with. Might dabble in agility. Beloved active companion is of course also a given. :)

How excited: I'm very excited. It is hard to be patient, but it is going to be worth waiting to do it right.

NextDog for my man
Breed: Labrador Retriever

Gender: I will be pushing for male, though we both prefer females. Depending on the lines I get my dog from... if she remains good with other females I would be fine with us getting another girl.

Colour: I like chocolates and the fox red... he wants a yellow like his old dog Lizzy. I like yellows that aren't too washed out. Haha, I'm such a shepherd person with wanting good pigment!

Where from: I looked into good breeders of hunting labs and have several I will be watching.

When: 8-12yrs from now. He hunts with his grandparent's springer (she sees him as her #1 person) and she is only a little over a year old. So no new one until she's getting too old to hunt.

Goals: Hunting. I'm sure I'll do all foundations and OB stuff. Maybe I can trial in OB or something with it.

How excited: Well.... lets just say I'd also like to raise a guide dog puppy before then so I can get used the lab thing. Not really my type of dog. I'm sure I'll do fine.

Most likely a Sheltie. I would prefer male, but I really don't care. He/She will most likely come from a rescue or a re home.

Breed: Buhund!!!!

Gender: Female

Color: I don't really care. I'm more interested in temperament/personality than color

Where from: Breeder in NJ/her lines

When: NOT GIVING IN TO PEER PRESSURE. So that means in a few years at the earliest. I want Jari to be actively competing in agility before I start a new dog.

Goals: Go everywhere, do anything type of dog. Agility mostly, but anything they seem to like is fine really.

How beenB]: SUPER PUMPED. Just wish I could have been this winter but it wouldn't have fair to my current dogs/my wallet :p

Gah. At this point, I feel like if I say anything publicly.... plans will fall through again. So I will just say.... a sighthound, and hopefully soon. Soonish.
