What is the best age to neuter a dog?

I was hoping to breed Binn but now since his accident I dont think its such a hot idea. He will be 5 months in a couple of wks, is this to early, should I wait, should I have done this months ago?

I of course will wait until he has healed completely before having this done.

You know they used to say 6 mos but nowadays are doing them as young as 8 wks some places.

My two ( a male and a female) were both done at 4 mos.

The younger they are the better and quicker they heal.

IMO - I would neuter at 12 months of age... or even 18 months if you can prevent "accidents" from happening.

I'd wait a couple years. they grow for a while and I hate seeing big dogs altered young.

Can they do it at the same time of his surgery? (Is he still having it?) Better to not put them through anesthesia more than necessary.
We decided not to do the surgery. Surgery would damage his growth plates around his knees and cause damage later. I explain it better in "very good news for Binn" on the forum :)

i would wait till at least 12 month for little dogs and 18-24 month for big dogs.
i think waiting till they are full grown is better. of course you got to watch your dog so nothing happens but arent we all supose to keep an eye on our dog anyway while he/she is outside?

so thats my opinion :D

The last 5 dogs we've either rescued or fostered were all done at an older age with no problems and fast recovery . My Rufus was done at 10 due to cancer and lived to be almost 17.

IMO I wouldn't neuter Binn until 18-24 months either, IF you can prevent any accidental breedings. Neutering too early in giant breeds can cause some problems that the not so giant breed dogs don't have to worry about so much.

This link shows some of the reasons why the giants especially can have problems with ligaments and growth plates when they don't have some of their natural horomones. Of course early spay and neuter is beneficial to many dog owners, and especially shelters, but may not be the best choice for big dogs like ours.

So would neutering him to early ;) . I would wait till he is 18 months to 2 years old. He may get a little crazy and be alot a dog to handle being intact but you have to allow him to grow, especially the large breeds such as what you have. If he gets to much for you and acts ill-mannered which some intact males can be like you could do it at 12 months. It's all up to you :) .

I personally wouldn't neuter a large breed dog until at least a year old to allow for proper growth and physical development. It won't hurt them physically to neuter early, but they don't grow to their full potential and I've heard anecdotal reports that there are increased chances for soft tissue injury in dogs that were neutered young.
