So, just recently my dog was in the backyard when there were some very loud noises in the front of the house that scared him. He curled up in a ball and I had to carry him inside he was so scared. He is a very smart dog and doesn't tend to forget, and now he will not go in the backyard unless I am out there and he is still very timid.

I usually open the door for him and let him out to do his business in the mornings and other times when I don't have time to be with him while he gets some fresh air.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to convince him that the backyard is a good place to be so he will go exploring and use the bathroom out there on a normal basis again?

Thanks so much for any suggestions and help anyone can give!

I think having lots of fun times playing with you in the back yard and he'll soon learn it's not a place to be scared of. Another hint, in the future if something scares him, just be very matter of fact and unconcerned yourself and try to distract him without actually trying to comfort him. He'll take his cues from you realizing he's got northing to be worried about and not carry a fear forward.

I agree with Poodlesmom. Get your dog to relax in the backyard by putting some of his favorite treats or toys. The purpose is not just tricking him to go to the backyard but helping him to learn that the backyard is a pleasant place to be. Be patient with him as no one knows how quickly he will get over his fright.
