So Regis knows a bunch of commands, but for some reason he will sometimes completely refuse to do it. His favorite one to ignore is "Down". After I say it and do the hand signal, he completely ignores it and just looks at me. However, other times he will do it right away.

How do I fix this?

Thanks

Bwahaha! If Fozzie wasn't a muttly, I would think he and Regis were seperated at birth. xD

When Fozzie tries to ignore or refuse a command, after I say it once and give the hand signal, I quickly move him into it. Then I practice it a few more times with him, and give him jackpot rewards when he does it on his own. These guys seem to have very selective hearing, for how HUGE their ears are. *sigh*

Just keep on keeping on. This seems very normal to me. "You want me to do something?" is a doggy response that seems to me to be part of the training process of instilling habits. They do get better.

Stop ALLOWING him to ignore the command.

Take a couple of steps back, and enforce the command by luring him with your hand, or helping gently with hands and leash to get him into the down position.

Praise ALL good responses, and ramp up the value of your food rewards while giving them ONLY for correct responses on the first command.

Stop giving him a CHOICE of whether to do it or not.

If Milo refuses to do a command...I ignore him. I turn around and stare at the ceiling. Sometimes he'll sniff around or try and do whatever he wants for a minute but then he'll start trying to get my attention and I keep ignoring him, or just say "down" again while not looking at him.
