Naming help for future puppy

I can't believe how long it's been since I was on here! And I don't even know why!?

Kili and I have been doing pretty well. She completed a bunch of agility titles in both CKC and AAC, learned a bunch of big disc tricks (vaults, dog catch, etc), and was invited to play with the SuperDogs which was a pretty surreal experience.

Anyway, there are potential plans in the works for future puppy. I got word from my breeder that she has one litter incubating, and she's going to try my favourite bitch again this summer (she's missed twice). So hopefully sometime this year there will be a new agility greyhound in training at our house. But I need help with my name list!

I am realizing more and more that I picked a really awkward theme for girl names. Most mountains are boy names (Everest, Logan, etc). Poo. Soooo... that said, right now I have these potentials....

1. Revel (for Mt. Revelstoke - this is currently my front runner name... I'm basically trying to decide if there's anything I like MORE than this. Other problem is I'm having trouble coming up with a registered name to go with this)
2. Kenna (for Mt. Kenya)
3. Rush (for Mt. Rushmore - but I think this is on the shelf for now because there's another dog locally with the name Rush that does agility)
4. Gala (for Mt. Galatea)
5. Neve (pronounced nei-vei, new granular snow)
6. Rhyme (actual spelling is Rime, but I don't like the way it looks - a coating of ice, basically frost)
7. Keltie (for. Keltie Glacier in Antarctica... it's not technically a mountain but....)
8. Denali (for Mt. McKinley)

I also really love the term "diamond dust" which is a type of snow/fog in the air that shines like diamonds. I can't think of a way to turn this into a name though. I've looked up girl names meaning "diamond" and can't find anything I like. I've tried different synonyms of "shine" (there's another dog locally named Shine, so I don't want to use that) like "glitter, glimmer, sparkle" and can't find anything I like.

What do you like? Other suggestions? Nothing common - so things like "Sierra" are out. I've managed to shorten other mountains to a girls name, but not any that I like... for example Himalaya can become Leia, but I don't like that at all. I've tried looking up mountain climbing terms, types of mountains/volcanos, etc. and it's really hard to turn things into girl dog names.

Kili is named for Mt. Kilimanjaro, and her registered name is Lakilanni Where Eagles Fly (song lyrics - "where eagles fly, on a mountain high"). So I need something along the same general lines.
 
I like Revel and Denali. Also Rhyme. You mentioned most mountain names are "boy names" but could you possibly either keep the name and get a girlier nickname or slightly change the name if you'd like? Idk if that made sense, but for example you could have "Everest" with the nn "Eve" or "Ever" or something along those lines.
 
I don't have any suggestions, as those are pretty much all of the same mountain names I came up with before getting my Everest. But for the record, I think Everest and even Logan could both work for a female. My Everest is female and I don't think the name is masculine at all. I also have a female human relative named Logan lol. And my own name can be male or female. So, I think you shouldn't put that much thought into how feminine or masculine a name is. Lots of names can be used for both. :-)
 
I like boy names for girls... but only certain boy names... and most of the mountains have male names that really can't be female. Logan and Everest are two of the more unisex ones. But Robson, Elias, Hector, Odin... can't be for a girl, I don't care what anyone says! lol. I'm really starting to stretch names into other things to make them workable, but not sure how far I want to stretch names from the theme.

For Everest I really like Everleigh/Everlee/Everley - but it's getting a little long for a dog's name. I'd end up shortening it and calling her Evy all the time, and I don't really love that. I also thought maybe I'd want to call a kid Everleigh one day... though I guess I can run it by DBF and if he hates it I can use it for a dog.

Then there's Castle Mountain, and I don't want to call a girl dog Castle, but I looked up actual castle names and there's a Berkeley Castle in the UK. I've always liked the name Berkeley and DBF already more or less nixed it as a kid name. It's a little long/awkward for a dog name... and it's a bit of a stretch on the theme.

Good to know no one else really has other ideas. I thought maybe I was missing some obvious ones. Terrible theme for names. Don't know why I chose it!
 
First off, yay more pointies on the forum!

Secondly, what about Fuji? I know that's unisex all the way, but I actually think it'd be a really cute name for a female Grey, personally. I know it's sort of similar to Kili but you could just shorten it to Fu.

Other things that came to mind:

Kita (for Mt. Kita)
Vesuvius, call her Su(e)
Devi (from Nanda Devi)
Annapurna (call her Anna)
Florence (from Go Tell It On The Mountain - kind of roundabout, I know)

Clearly, I like kind of odd names, but I also like just K (for K2).

Writing out this list makes me realize I like short, quick names and human names more than I thought for dogs...
 
I love the mountain theme! I think I'm probably going to stick with a nature theme for my dogs from here on out, so I have a whole list that includes a couple mountain-themed names.

Here are a couple I thought of when I was trying to find a name for Cypress:
Shasta (Mt. Shasta)
Cascade/Cas/Cassie (Cascade Range)
Rain or Rainy (Mt. Rainier)- this one is more common, but the theme makes it unique
Denali

You could also do Whitney (Mt. Whitney) or Kea/K (Mauna Kea).

And yay for more puppies!

I like Devi, but there's already a dog named Snow Devyl who is called Deevy, so it's kind of close even though Devi is technically pronounced more like "Davy"... and then I can just see that her name will be pronounced wrong by every gate steward. I already deal with that with Kili all the time as everyone calls her "Keeley"... I've got most people at local trials trained now, but whenever we travel.... lol

So I guess I've got a short list and I'll just have to see what fits.

In other news, the puppies were born last night. 11 puppies total, 7 girls which is awesome for my chances of at least one of them being right for me!

Oops, that's how I've been pronouncing her name in my brain. How is it actually pronounced?

You could name her Tacoma/Tahoma, which was the original Salish name for Mt. Rainier. It means "nourishing breast", so definitely not a dude name. :rofl1:

Pele?

Helen? From Mt. St. Helens? Half the mountain blew off in recent history, so you could get some interesting possibilities for registered names from that?

Eyja? (aye-ya) (Eyjafjallajökull)

If you like snow names, Nivala is latin for ice water and Stiria is latin for icicle. They're both feminine nouns too.

ETA: If it was me I'd write her call name as Eyjafjallajökull on entries, just for extra fun. :popcorn:
 
Thanks! I kind of like Nivala, though it's a little long syllable-wise. But still a contender I think.

None of my agility friends like Revel. :( They say it's too common and they know lots of dogs named Revel? I looked it up on AAC and there's only one dog currently that I can find with that name. They all like Denali, but I'm not really sold on it. So still undecided! lol.

Hopefully puppy pictures will help narrow it down for me!
 
I love Revel! It was on the short list when I was naming Onyx. I haven't heard of any other dogs with that name but I'm sure there are out there, especially in the agility world ;) It does sound quite a bit like Rebel, I thought people would always think that was my dog's name, but not a big deal.
