except for the lack of tuck (which could be from being fat) she looks like an old fashioned mountain cur w/ the short highset drop ears & the square head. off hand she looks VERY similar to the older Hugh Stephens stock of mt cur. they are treated like a seperate breed but the type crops up a lot in other lines. for that matter she also looks similar to a black dog Robert Kemmer had way back when, 60s i think. depending on how close you are to southern ohio the chances are good that she is a stephens. the stephens stock is most common in ohio, WV & eastern KY (although there is an excellent hunter/breeder in ID & the faulkner strain of stephens is mostly in WI). the scars could be from honorable work. dogs that actually catch coons tend to get their faces cut up & their ears split. their location on the underside cheeks & the ears would lead me to believe she is equally comfortable on the chest as the throat when killing a coon. if she is working bobs also she would tend to have scarring on the side & top of the head pulling toward the eyes from throating the cat. while coons can cut other places especially on a slick coated dog cats will leave a lot more scarring on the undeside on a dog that hasn't learned to lay beside them.
